Poor Hamish, sadly people just don’t think but need to be aware.

A Shetland pony called Hamish collapsed after being fed a roast dinner and other food by well-meaning visitors to the New Forest.

Hamish recovered after his ordeal following a complex four-hour operation to clear a blockage of food. Others may not be so lucky!

The owner found a half eaten roast dinner in the field and then she had to stop a woman feeding her other pony fruit. Natalie Munir from Stop Feeding Our Horses says "They are doing it out of kindness, it's not malicious, they think it's a nice thing to do. They might have some mints in their pocket and they decide to give it to the horses and ponies, or an odd apple or carrot or even handfuls of grass over the fence, without realising how dangerous it is."

Police horse wows Royal Ascot in designer sunglasses: ‘People seem to love them!’
Article in Horse & Hound on police horse suffering from uveitis.
Evidentially, the glasses were made especially for police horse, Luna to protect to the eyes from UV light, dust and any other sources of irritation.
Uveitis is inflammation within the eye, termed equine recurrent uveitis when two or more episodes occur.

Anyone who’s been to Royal Ascot on a hot day like this week will know how tricky it is to get one’s look just right. Among those who have managed it with aplomb this year is Luna, who’s there every day, accessorising her mainly leather-based style with the perfect pair of sunglasses. Luna is ...

IMPORTANT:
It looks like we may be heading for some pretty hot weather this week. ☀️
In very hot weather, horses can become dehydrated, lethargic and generally reluctant to work. Severe heat stress can cause colic, diarrhoea or collapse, so it is important to keep your horse cool.
Here are some top tips:
Choose the coolest times of the day for both exercise and turnout. Try to slow down & reduce the work in warm weather.
Provide shade - trees are best as one side will always be out of the sun, whereas many shelters are in full sun some of the time.
Provide fresh, cool water and lots of it. Most horses drink more in warm weather, but others will need a salt lick or extra salt to encourage them to do so.
Provide salt/mineral licks in field/stable or consider adding electrolytes in feed to replace salts lost through sweating.
If you are bringing horses in to avoid the heat, ensure there is adequate ventilation.
Avoid sunburn: Horses, especially those with pink 'flesh marks' (i.e. pink noses) can suffer from sunburn, but the sun can also affect white socks, blazes and hairless patches from scarring.
Fly masks & sheets can help, as well as generous application of sunblock.
If you have any queries please don't hesitate to contact us.
Thank you.🙏
And enjoy the sunshine but do take care and keep safe

DENTAL DAY ON 9TH JUNE: STOP PRESS

There are now only 2 slots remaining for our next dental day!
Please do get in touch ASAP if you’d like to take up the offer below and bring your horse or pony to this very popular dental day. 🙏

All Details below:-
They will once again be one hour long appointments available for clients to bring their horse into the Hythe hospital for a thorough oral review, dental rasping and an oroscopic exam.
Time slots start at 9am sharp and are on a first come first served basis, so please don’t delay.
An oroscope (video exam) is a specialised camera that we use to look at the mouth in detail - it will let clients see the 'before and 'after' and we can use it to highlight any areas of interest and monitor things within the mouth.
This is going to be offered on this day only, for £80 including sedation (horses and ponies must be sedated for the oroscopic exam) It really is a great opportunity.
Dentals are so much more than just 'rasping the sharp points' and our hope is that this will be a great way for clients to see the work and knowledge that goes into keeping their horses and ponies mouths as comfortable as possible.

Here at Seadown Equine we are proud to prioritise the safety of our vets and nurses and even prouder to have showjumper Jasmin Head supporting the move.👏

Here Jasmine speaks with one of our partner equine veterinary practices about why it matters that vets and nurses wear head protection when handling and treating horses.

We’d also like to thank all our lovely Seadown clients for welcoming this move and supporting us, we’ve had some great feedback and we are so grateful.
