As part of Strangles Awareness Week 2023 which starts on Bank Holiday Monday, we’re encouraging horse owners to get to know their horse’s normal temperature and be able to spot fever early.
Here our very own, lovely equine vet Louisa shows you how to take your horses temperature.
Why not try it this weekend?

It’s that time of year for Spring worming and our very own lovely equine vet Louisa, has kindly agreed to demonstrate how to correctly use a weight tape.
Whilst it might seem simple, a weight tape is inexpensive and helps avoid the guessing game when it comes to deworming your horse. 🪱
Please do contact us if you have any queries at all and don’t forget we now offer the invaluable Horse Health Programme - a new preventative health care programme and cost saving scheme for horses, ponies and donkeys
Thank you 🙏
We hope you and your equines are coping in this heat.
One of our lovely clients has made her horses fruit lollies! Here is one of them enjoying their lick.
Another tip for keeping your equines cool is soaking their fly rugs in a bucket of water before putting them on, especially good for those equines that don’t like the hosepipe!!
You'll be pleased to know that Hope and her kittens are doing really well and their story is being told by quite a few of the papers (Sunday Express last week and soon The Mail and all our own local media as well as the veterinary press) which is a great way to gain awareness about the horrific shooting of cats with air guns.
Air guns desperately need to be licensed in England and Wales, in line with existing legislation in other parts of the UK. Did you know that in the past 5 years over 800 cats in the UK have been reported in the press as being shot with an air gun?
Hope is one of the very lucky ones, having been found by kind Sarah Barker and expertly operated by our own Emma Owen and the team here at Seadown.
The photos and video below were taken by Cats Protection where Hope and the 4 kittens are now being so well cared for.
Anyone wishing to offer Hope and the kittens a loving forever home should keep an eye on the Southampton branch’s website www.cats.org.uk/southampton where their details will be posted as soon as they can be homed
The Cats Protection also has a live petition on air gun licensing which can be signed by visiting: www.cats.org.uk/airgunspetition
Thank you everyone and we do hope you enjoy the latest happy video of Hope loving her new role as Mum.
Something to make you smile this Easter Sunday.
Do you remember the abandoned, beautiful black and white cat that had been shot? Our X-Rays showed air gun pellets in her neck and mouth.
Well, she was operated on by our own amazing veterinary surgeon Emma Owen and made a wonderful recovery - she was one lucky girl.
BUT...'Hope' as she has been called, was also pregnant and two days ago, despite her ordeal, she gave birth to 4 gorgeous kittens (3 black and white and 1 grey and white)
Her story appears in the Sunday Express today but we though you'd like to see this video that shows what a great Mum she is.
Please do NOT call Seadown for further information, because Hope is now being lovingly cared for by the Cats Protection League and anyone wishing to offer Hope or her kittens a forever home should keep an eye on the Southampton branch’s website www.cats.org.uk/southampton where details will be posted as soon as they are ready to be homed
A big thank you to Cats Protection League for taking such good care of Hope and her precious kittens, and for the use of this lovely video.
