Here’s some free tips…• Starting with the car off & quiet, walk your dog past the open boot rewarding to charge up the positive association.• Create happiness & relaxation by playing games, chasing treats along the ground, lots of positive reinforcement.• Perhaps sit in the boot holding the motivator (food/ toy).• Play with their toy in the boot, inviting them to join but not applying any physical pressure.• Reward any attempts to get in/ closer.• Allow your dog to get in the car without closing the boot door.• Repeat & reward.• Close boot, open and reward, repeat several times.• Ensure the dog is comfortable before starting the engine.• Drive a short distance and walk home making the dog feel fantastic about how brave they were! 👏• Repeat.• Drive to fun locations more than the vets!• Msintsin calmness in the vehicle, provide adequate bedding & rest stops if dog is stressed. • Dogs can enjoy a chew or licki mat to reduce anxiety in the car. #southcoastdogtraining #dogtrainertips #dogsandcars #travel #dogsofinstagram #dogreels #dogvideos Follow us to find out more 🐾

Make sure you PROOF TRAIN your dog! I have so many clients say, ‘they do it fine at home’, or ‘they only do it in class’….This is due to LACK of proof training. 🙌Proof training is when you take a learned behaviour, and ask for it in different scenarios. Do they understand still when you’re on grass instead of carpet? Do they seem to ‘forget’ when you take them to the beach? Is there focus non existent when you come into class? Do they go ‘deaf’ when other dogs are around?If this sounds familiar - you need to get comfortable & confident in proof training those behaviours in a variety of situations. Let it become a habit to ask for a seemingly unnecessary behaviour when you’re in an environment that doesn’t require it (e.g asking for a sit stay when you’ve just entered the park, ask for their paw when another dog is visible, or ask for a sit in the rain etc). Practicing these improve the likelihood of you maintaining engagement with your dog should you need it. To have control of your dog is the ONLY way you can ensure they’re safe.. so why wouldn’t you want to build up those good habits ahead of time. No good practicing a recall when your dog is darting towards the road.. practice it BEFORE you need it.
