Caring for alpacas - when to call the vet
Check behaviour, if it’s not normal, be concerned. Take temperature, check eye membrane (famacha) and always assume an alpaca that looks unwell is probably sicker than they look. Of course if you need a vet, it’s always on a public holiday or weekend!

Caring for alpacas - vaccines
Initial course should be 4-6 weeks apart (oops, slight error in video!)
Then boost 6 monthly ideally or 12 months max, unless you give another initial course.

Caring for alpacas - Coccidia gut parasites
Faecal test, then treat. Watch out for E-Mac.

Caring for alpacas - gut parasite worms
Faecal test each alpaca and only treat those that need it and with the right medication.
I forgot to mention poo picking. Regular faeces removal from the fields helps keep counts low.

Caring for alpacas - mites
Some mites lives on the skin, others burrow into it. They need different treatments.

Caring for alpacas - trimming toenails

Caring for alpacas - teeth trimming
Teeth trimming is a specialist task. Your vet can advise if it is needed.

Caring for alpacas - body condition scoring.
At least once a month (we do it every two weeks) and keep records.

Caring for alpacas - giving a drench
Additional minerals and some medications can be given orally. This is often known as a drench.

Caring for Alpacas - mineral buckets and licks.
Free access means some may get too much and others not enough. They nibble at licks (they don’t really lick) to get the salt or drink the molasses rich water from the mineral bucket because it’s sweet. They don’t know whether they need other minerals, so it’s pot luck if they are getting what they need to stay healthy.
