Well never let it be said that the staff at Morley don’t go above and beyond for our patients 😂😂
This is our wonderful - and newly qualified **congratulations** 🥳 - Veterinary Nurse Jenna going that extra mile to help a patient feel comfortable with their treatment, and yes! She is wearing a headband with dog food on 😂😂😂 Little Nelly the pug is a frequent visitor for her nails as she was sadly born with slightly deformed back feet meaning her nails don’t wear evenly, she is very sensitive to having her feet touched and is a wriggle bum for her nail clips! What better way to distract her than by enjoying a tasty snack while her nails are trimmed 😉
Well done Jenna and see you soon Nelly 😊
🤔🤔maybe we should invest in a licky mat and save Jenna’s hair🤔🤔

The growing awareness of the importance of vitamin D has led many people to turn to supplements, either as tablets, capsules or in spray form. Chronic (repeat) or exceptionally high doses of vitamin D, such as certain prescription creams, may lead to an increased frequency of drinking and urination, muscle spasms and high calcium levels, resulting in many serious issues. However, most vitamin preparations bought over the counter, do not contain sufficient vitamin D, normally labelled in International Units (IU), or micrograms (μg or mcg) even if your pet eats a large number.

A higher risk would be the newer spray preparations. If one of these bottles is chewed by a dog, there is the potential for an overdose of vitamin D; an additional problem would be xylitol exposure, the artificial sugar used in most spray supplement formulations, which is toxic to dogs.

If you suspect your pet has ingested any vitamin D preparation, call your vet with as much information as possible about the strength of vitamin D involved or product name, or alternatively call Animal PoisonLine for a risk assessment to determine whether or not your pet needs to be seen by a vet. (01202 509 000 charges apply).

HOW TO PROTECT PAWS ON HOT PAVEMENTS
1. Follow the five-second rule, and check the surface for heat with the back of your hand, before you leave the house.
2. Keep to grass.
3. Walk early in the morning or late in the evening when surfaces are cooler.
4. Invest in a pair of booties to help avoid burning paws.

UPDATE: We have now made contact with the family of this little man, thanks very much to all who shared and helped us give him a proper goodbye 🌈

We have very sadly been handed a deceased cat by a member of the public after he was involved in a road traffic accident in Stanley Village between Glebe Crescent and the Church.
He is a short haired black, male (neutered), not wearing a collar but he is ID chipped - unfortunately when we searched the data base for his family’s details we have discovered that the details are not registered. We estimate him to be a young adult.
If you are missing a cat matching this description or know the identity of his family please ask them to ring the surgery on 0115 9329322 and we can hopefully reunite you for him to be laid to rest. He will be kept at the surgery in cold storage for 10 days, if his owner is not found he will be respectfully cremated after this time.

⚠️THE FLEA LIFE CYCLE & FLEA FACTS

Fleas are the most common of all external parasites found on pets. (Ctenocephalides felis)
The cat flea, is the most prevalent species of flea found on both cats and dogs. An infestation of fleas is both unpleasant and potentially dangerous for pets and their owners.

A flea‘s life cycle lasts anywhere from a few weeks to a month, although under the right conditions it can continue for much longer.

During the lifecycle fleas go through a complete metamorphosis in three main stages:

Adult fleas jump on to a host (e.g. cat, dog or human) and begin feeding on the host’s blood. The bites result in itching and irritation and may also transmit serious diseases.

With in 48 hours fleas begin laying numerous eggs that quickly fall off the animal into the environment.
In a few days these eggs hatch into flea larvae.
These larvae dislike light and immediately crawl deep into carpets and cracks in floors making them almost impossible to spot.

The larvae spin coc**ns in which they develop into pupae and when conditions are right they emerge as new adult fleas ready to jump onto a warm-blooded host and continue the cycle.

A single female can lay up to 50 eggs per day.
In one month, 10 females could lay up to 15000 eggs. The pet spreads these eggs wherever it goes.
This can lead to massive infestation in the home environment.

A flea can jump as far as 33 cm in one leap, so infesting other pets and humans is easy.
Fleas measure 1-2 mm making them hardly visible. For every 5 fleas on the animal, 95 are invisible in the environment (eggs falling off the animal, existing eggs, larvae and pupae in the environment).

The entire home, including carpets, sofas, beds etc can be heavily infested by flea eggs and larvae. These are the seeds of future pet re-infestation.
Vacuuming will only remove a small number of eggs and larvae because they are hidden deep in floors and rugs, and entwined in the fibres. Fleas can survive like this for up to 6 months.

A single flea will bite its host around 10 times a day and ingest up to 15 times its weight in blood. In cases of heavy infestation, fleas can produce anaemia in otherwise healthy animals, and in extreme cases, even death in smaller animals such as very small puppies kittens.

One of the main factors allowing fleas to rapidly complete their lifecycle is warmth, central heating enables fleas to reproduce all year round.

You can book a FREE FLEA check at our surgery by calling the practice on 0115 9326056 8am-6pm Monday-Friday or 9am-12pm Saturday. 🐶🐱🐰🐹🐭

⚠️🐍 Although Adders will not go out of their way to bite, if startled it is a defence mechanism.

Watch out for adders!

As the weather warms up, these venomous snakes wake up from hibernation. Inquisitive dogs are most at risk, with many being bitten on the face.

Ernie had been showing signs of discomfort after the wind blew a door shut on his little tail. 🌬️ An X-ray confirmed a fracture.

Because of where the trauma is, it was decided to wait until the swelling had gone down before any surgical intervention.
He has been kept comfortable with pain relief and anti inflammatories.

Further check ups and X-rays show that the fracture is healing well and extreme wagging has resumed so we are hopeful that he will recover with just a tiny kink in his tail.

It’s very important to remember that tails are part of the spine and any trauma or injury should be assessed by your vet.

🐰While pet rabbits are relatively inexpensive to buy, caring for them may not be.
You will need to provide secure outdoor or indoor space for them, food, hay, suitable bedding, vaccinations, vet checks and dental care.
Be prepared to bring your rabbits inside during bad weather if necessary and ensure they stay cool in summer.
Caring for a pair of rabbits over their lifetime can cost over £10,000.

Despite being incredibly popular as pets, rabbits are amongst the most neglected and misunderstood.
Many end up living out their days confined to a hutch, alone and unable to behave as they would naturally.
