๐ŸŽƒ Keep your furry friends safe this spooky season! ๐ŸŽƒ

Beware of these Halloween treats that are poisonous to dogs: chocolate, sweets, caramel apples, macadamia nuts, chocolate raisins, and sweet wrappers๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿฌ

Even just small amounts can be dangerous to your pet, make sure to store these treats out of reach. If your dog has eaten any of these, please call and seek advice from your vet. Opting for pet-friendly snacks ensures your pup has a howling good time! ๐Ÿถโค๏ธ๐Ÿ‘ป

Top Tips to Keep Your Pets Happy during Halloween!

Whilst Halloween can be a fun and exciting time, constant door knocking/doorbell ringing, and trick-or-treaters can be stressful for our furry friends.

Here are some tips to help create a calm environment for your pets:

๐ŸŽƒ Create a Safe Space: Set up a quiet room with their favourite toys and bedding

๐ŸŽƒ Keep Them Busy: Provide interactive toys or treats this will help keep your pet engaged and distracted

๐ŸŽƒ Play Calming Music: Soft music or white noise can help drown out the sounds of doorbells and trick or treaters

๐ŸŽƒ Use Pet Calming Products: Consider using pheromone diffusers or calming sprays to help reduce stress

๐ŸŽƒLimit Costume Time: If you dress up your pet, make sure the costume is comfortable and doesn't add to their anxiety

๐ŸŽƒStay Calm: Your pet can sense your stress. Stay calm and relaxed to help them feel more at ease

The colourful leaves and the crisp air are telling us Autumn has arrived ๐Ÿ‚

Here are some tips to consider when out enjoying a walk with your dog during the Autumn season:

๐Ÿ Keep warm, both you and your dog. Shorter haired or leaner dogs will feel the cold, ensure they are appropriately attired for the weather in jumpers and coats ๐Ÿงค
๐Ÿ Despite the cold weather ensure your pet is able to hydrate when they are out exercising
๐Ÿ Watch out for any hazards that are hidden under fallen leaves such as holes in the ground or sharp objects
๐Ÿ Keep your pet on a lead in areas highly populated by wildlife to prevent unexpected chases
๐Ÿ As daylight gets shorter consider how to keep yourself and your pet visible, using reflective clothing and accessories means other walkers and motorists can see you
๐Ÿ Ticks are active during autumn, check your pet after every walk and keep up with preventative treatment

This handsome friendly cat was handed into our Skipton branch today, found near Earby bus station. He is a happy and healthy cat without the need of veterinary attention therefore has been returned where he was found. We have attached a paper collar with our phone number on for the attention of the owner if he wanders home so we can advise about microchipping. If you know whose cat it is, let them know.

๐Ÿ† Another Nettie win for the Ashlands Team ๐Ÿ†

This time we are celebrating our vet Amy ๐Ÿ‘

Amy attended a dog who was involved in a serious road traffic accident, Amy remained calm to ease the pets stress, staying with her patient, considerably beyond her expected hours. Sadly despite best efforts this little dog succumbed to the injures sustained.

Recognising the families distress at returning to the surgery, Amy took the decision to deliver this little dogs ashes herself, in her own time. We would like to recognise Amys compassion and we are really proud to have her as part of the Ashlands Team.

BOAS

Respiratory function grading:

Your brachycephalic pet can be graded to determine how affected by BOAS they are, following grading the vet can discuss if further treatment is required and their recommendations.

During Grading the vet will examine your pet whilst they are calm and quiet and then once they have completed a timed amount of exercise.

Dogs are graded as follows (as advised by the Kennel Club and University of Cambridge's Respiratory Function Grading Scheme):

Grade 0 - dog is clinically unaffected and is currently free of respiratory signs of BOAS
Grade 1 - dog is clinically unaffected but does have some respiratory noise. This does not affect their exercise performance
Grade 2 - dog is clinically affected and has moderate respiratory signs of BOAS that should be monitored and may require veterinary treatment
Grade 3 - dog is clinically affected and has severe respiratory signs of BOAS

More information is available on the kennel club website www.thekennelclub.org.uk
