What is Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)? ๐ค
Antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria develop defences that protect them from antibiotic medications, making treatment less effective ๐จ
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an increasing problem worldwide, affecting both human and animal health. Antibiotics are essential when treating many conditions in animals and people, but bacteria are becoming resistant to many antibiotics that we rely on in human and veterinary medicine.
Ashlands Veterinary Centre is taking part in the antibiotic amnesty this November. You can return any unused or out of date antibiotics (including ear and eye treatments) for your pet to us for safe disposal ๐ช

Billy playing football on the beach in Northumberland โค๏ธ
Billy has been seeing vet Sam and our vet physio Steph since May last year. He has previously had major spinal surgery to treat nerve impingement and inflammation, and another surgery in early 2022 to remove the metalwork which had sadly failed. When he first came to us Billy was not overly keen on being touched, he had a lot of muscular issues compensating for the instability in his back, gait changes, lameness, he found it difficult to stand still or to move between sitting/lying and standing and was only managing very short walks.
He now LOVES coming to see us, relaxes into his massage and enjoys showing off with his therapeutic exercises. His condition will always require management, but alongside regular physio, pain medication and hydrotherapy with Canine Health and Hydro - he is certainly back to enjoying life! โฝ๏ธ โฝ๏ธ โฝ๏ธ
It was a sunny afternoon and Mabel, a beautiful Hungarian Vizsla was making her way (on foot) towards her friendly Ashlands Veterinary Centre.
The birds are singing, a light breeze passing through the trees, could life get any better than this?
For Mabel, yes, for she embarked across a discarded ice-cream. Surveying the scene Mabel rapidly concluded such a find comes once but a blue moon and decided to evoke the rule of โfinders keepersโ.
Had Mabel thought to ask her owner to weigh in on this sudden burst of initiative, she might have been told the risks involved in eating things found discarded on the street, especially as this ice-cream, however tempting (If quite melted) came with an additional consideration of a wooden 'lolly pop stick'.
Hungarian Vizslas as a breed have earned the nickname โVelcro dogsโ, this is because they like to stick close to their owners, however, nobody thought to inform Mabel of this as she embodied 'Miss Independent' and seized her chance to devour the melted sweet treat, lolly pop stick and hadn't her owner intervened half the pavement!
Did you know that some Hungarian Vizslas have been recorded running at speeds up to 40mphs?! Mabel did.
Harry Houdini is not the only Hungarian export of disappearing acts as Mabel performed the โblink and you'll miss actโ of making the lollipop stick 'disappear'. Shame it was only for an audience of one; her mortified owner!
So quick was Mabels party trick that her owner was not even sure there ever was a lollipop stick! As wonderful as Vizslas are, their ability to digest processed wooden sticks is not a known breed characteristic. Luckily Ashlands Veterinary Centre was right around the corner and Mabels Veterinary Surgeon Bianca.
โWhy not Just make her sickโ we hear you cry! In principle what goes down, surely must come back up, however wooden lollipop sticks have a canny ability to cause blockages, whichever direction the body carries them. After discussing the risks o

Keep your pets safe around festive guests
If you are entertaining guests this Christmas, there are likely to be more people going in and out of your home. Take care to ensure your guests know how to interact with your pets and that pets have somewhere quiet to go if they need time alone.
Having pets microchipped brings peace of mind that they can be traced back to you if they are accidentally let out or escape.
Human chocolate for humans. Dog treats for dogs.
We always get asked is of chocolate okay for our dog? The answer? Zero chocolate is the right amount for a dog.
Chocolate contains theobromine (a compound poisonous to dogs). How dangerous chocolate is depends on the type and amount eaten and the size and health of your dog.
Chocolate coins, chocolate tree decorations, your favourite festive tin are all bad for your dog.
If your dog has eaten chocolate, the best course of action is to contact us as soon as possible for advice.

Our top tip: You don't need a fancy slow feeder! You can put your pets kibble inside a muffin tray as a cheap effective way to make their dinner time more interesting. ๐
