This week’s Saturday story is about a lovely big family of lovely big dogs who all love their regular trips to Run Free!

Ash is an American Staffordshire pup, who can’t have much freedom now that she is officially exempt as an XL bully. Being able to run freely in the Run Free fields has been brilliant for burning off all her puppy energy.

Jax is a reactive, rescue Cane Corso who isn’t able to be off-lead either. The Run Free parks have changed everything for him, finally giving him a sense of freedom.

Kaya, a Boerboel, and Indie, a Staffy cross, are both very social, but sometimes too excited, so being able to use these fields for them has been great as they are easily distracted in public.

Kelsey says: “Our dogs are huge fans of the Run Free Dechmont Woodland field. It’s brilliant as they would never be given the opportunity to run off-lead in a forest setting otherwise. They love all the different smells. They also enjoy running around the Run Free fields at Dalkeith, and are loving the longer grass in the Eskbank field! We love Run Free because it gives us the opportunity to exercise all our dogs at once without any worry or distractions. We love seeing them all so happy, and so free for a change.”

😍***New fields announcement***😍

We’re very excited to announce the opening of our latest new site, Run Free Perth. There are two lovely fields to choose from, the Scone field and the slightly larger Tay field. Both are fully mown, so great for zoomies, ball chasing and practising recall and training. They have a shelter and picnic table and each field has its own water supply. There's a large car park with room for 8 cars, and the fields have their own secure loading bays, so you can park and let the dogs straight out into the field.

You’ll find the Run Free Perth site just past the beautiful Scone Palace, to the north of Perth. If you fancy making a day of it, combine a booking at Run Free with a visit to the Palace. Dogs on lead are allowed in the Palace gardens, and there is a dog friendly café and shop.

This week’s Saturday story features a very exotic breed with an ancient history – Chinese Crested dogs. It’s said that they were used for hunting vermin on Chinese trading vessels as far back as the 1500s!

These particular Chinese crested dogs are Sirius, Zowie, Maj and Mouse, and they love nothing more than blowing off some steam in the Run Free fields after their long weekends showing at championship dog shows and open shows where they have won multiple high placings all over the UK.

Jessica says: “This is the first time we have been to the Dechmont woodland field and they loved being able to explore the wooded area, running about chasing their friends and being normal naughty dogs. The Run Free fields are great because they can run about without us worrying that they might wander off!”

Here's the gorgeous Moss at our brilliant woodland field, Dechmont, at Run Free Broxburn. This field gives your dog the chance to go running through the trees and bushes, with the whole wood securely enclosed in our usual 6 foot fencing. This week’s Sunday story is short and sweet, and it has a simple message – it’s the taking part that counts! Demonstrating this important lesson is Maadi, a 7 year old gsd whose recall isn’t too good, so her family bring her to the Run Free fields for some extra freedom.

Maadi loves chasing her ball, but rarely brings it back. So her family thought they’d try out the agility jumps. Here’s the result! Moira says: “The annoying thing is first time she ran over all the jumps but I didn’t have my phone ready.” It’s always the way! But it doesn’t matter! Maadi had a great time and that’s all that’s important.

Some of you may have noticed that we’re leaving areas of long grass in some of our Run Free fields. There are two reasons for this.

• Good for the environment
Having areas of long grass creates a rich habitat for various plants, and insects. This promotes a balanced ecosystem, supports pollinators like bees and butterflies, and enhances the overall biodiversity of the area.

• Great for dogs!
Dogs like long grass because it's fun and interesting. The tall grass has different smells, feels good to run through, and is great for games of chase or hide and seek. This makes long grass an exciting place for dogs to play and explore.

This week’s Sunday story is about the absolutely divine Hera and Zeus, two beautiful rottweilers. Rottweilers have an amazing history, being one of the oldest breeds, believed to go back to Roman times! They are a working breed and can often be used as police and guard dogs. The Run Free fields give Hera and Zeus the chance to have fun and use up loads of energy in a safe environment.

Louise says: “Zeus is 4 years old and just a big daft puppy! He would run around all day at Run Free if I let him! He loves to have a roll in the grass! Hera is 3 years old and she spends most her time looking at her daft brother with an expression of what on earth?! She loves to stalk him and pounce to initiate play!”

Why is there a 5 minute gap between Run Free slots?

There are many reasons why people enjoy using Run Free dog fields, but there’s a large group of dogs who really need spaces like the Run Free fields, and those are reactive dogs. The Run Free fields give these dogs the chance to have time away from the triggers that scare them, whether that’s other dogs, people, traffic or loads of other seemingly trivial things. The fields also give the owners of reactive dogs the opportunity to have a relaxing walk and to bond with their dog without worrying what’s around the next corner.

The 5 minute gap between bookings is there to ensure everyone gets their full time in the field. But it’s also there to give space to owners of nervous and reactive dogs to allow them to have their dog in the car before the next person turns up, and equally to start their Run Free session without the previous field users still being in the car park. It may seem a small matter if your dog isn’t affected by other people, dogs or cars, but for some dogs this can be the difference between a great day and a disastrous day. Please be thoughtful of others, and please stick to the Run Free rules of not arriving more than 5 minutes before your start time, and leaving the site promptly at the end of your visit.

This week’s Saturday story is about the lovely Millie the collie cross (with lots of other breeds mixed in!). Millie’s family adopted her from Dogs Trust when she was just over a year old. She recently celebrated her 3rd birthday at Run Free and had a great time rolling around in the freshly cut grass and jumping in the air to catch her ball.
The Run Free fields are often used by nervous dogs who can’t cope with other dogs. With Millie it’s the other side of the story.

Heather says: “Millie gets smiles and attention everywhere she goes due to her big personality and how easily she makes friends with anyone who speaks to her. We like coming to Run Free to let her run wild off lead without the risk of her going off to introduce herself to other people or dogs she doesn't know.”

Happy birthday Millie, and we look forward to you having many more fun visits to Run Free in the future!

The Minto field is a great place for family fun. It’s located at Hilltop Doggy Day Care & Dog Walking, just north of Hawick and within 20 minutes of Selkirk, Melrose and Jedburgh. The field itself is beautiful and in a lovely peaceful setting. There’s mown grass with areas of longer grass, obstacles and plants, so plenty of fun for everyone! There’s seating outside as well as a shelter if the weather’s wet. And of course, we supply poo bags and water.

This week’s Saturday story is about Kenzo, a big loveable dog who just wants lots of cuddles! Kenzo is a 14-month-old mixed breed - his mum is a red nose pitbull and his dad is an old English Bulldog.

Rosie says: “Being a pitbull, Kenzo can't run around a park or public place, so this was absolutely fantastic, and he just loved every bit of it. This was our first time at Run Free, and I could see the enjoyment in Kenzo’s face. We did bring some toys to play fetch, but he wasn’t interested. He was only interested in the grass and freedom to run. My son was a bit unhappy that we took Kenzo to Run Free without him, but I told him we will take him up next time and they can play football and run wild! Thank you for letting Kenzo enjoy being a dog!”

Spring has sprung, and the Run Free grass cutting schedule is well and truly under way. Have any of you noticed that your dogs are enjoying munching on the fresh new grass growing in the Run Free fields? Have you wondered why they do this? There are several theories as to why dogs eat grass:

• Diet: Dogs may eat grass to supplement their diet with nutrients they may be lacking, such as fibre or minerals.
• Instinct: Dogs, like their wild ancestors, may have an instinctual urge to graze on vegetation.
• Exploration: Dogs may eat grass out of curiosity, as part of exploring their environment.
• Enjoyment: Some dogs may simply enjoy the taste or texture of grass, munching on it for pleasure.
• Self-medication: Dogs might eat grass as a form of self-medication to help alleviate minor ailments or discomforts.

Does your dog seem to enjoy eating grass? What’s your theory about why they do it?

By the way, while it's generally considered normal for dogs to eat grass occasionally, excessive grass consumption may need a vet’s advice.

This week’s Saturday story is about Frida, who’s 4, and Fergus, who’s 2. They are tiny dogs known as biechi, which is a cross of a biewer terrier and a chihuahua. They are both real characters and the best of friends. Unfortunately, Fergus finds it challenging to cope with meeting other dogs out on walks. His family have been working on developing his confidence with this through positive reinforcement training techniques and they manage walks the best they can but it’s stressful not knowing what's round the corner.

Kirsty says: “This is why having somewhere like the Run Free fields to hire can be a saving grace for any reactive dogs. A space where they can literally run free. For me it means I can relax and really engage with my dogs without being on the constant look out for potential triggers. Even the field rules on respecting other field users, times of arrival etc are considerate and reassuring.”

This week our Sunday Story is all about Flynn, a lovely labrador. Our fields are brilliant for so many different activities. For Flynn and his mum Leah, a trip to Run Free is a great opportunity for Flynn to use his brain as well as his body, for Leah to de-stress and for both to enjoy time together.

Leah says: “We love using the Run Free fields as Flynn is reactive and sometimes really feeds off my stress levels and it can make walks really overwhelming for us both. So sometimes it’s nice to book a field just to do some training and enrichment. Rather than playing plain old fetch, we will hide his ball and send him to find it. We also do heel work and use his tug ball as a reward, as tug is fantastic for building a bond with your dog. It’s also nice just to see Flynn run around without the stress of being rushed by a stranger’s dog! I actually find it helps reduce my stress levels too as I get to spend quality time with Flynn without feeling pressured to focus on the environment and other peoples’ dogs instead of him!”

We talk a lot about how great our Run Free fields are for dogs running around using loads of energy. But lots of us have older dogs. Can they still enjoy a trip to Run Free? Most definitely!

This week’s Sunday story is about Piper, a beautiful 10 year old Bearded Collie. Piper loves his walks, but gets nervous of other dogs, so his weekend treat is a visit to a Run Free field, touring between Run Free South Queensferry, Kirkliston, Winchburgh and Inverkeithing. He even goes to Run Free on his holidays to Cardross and Aberdeenshire! A real Run Free connoisseur!

Cara says: “It is lovely to be able to take Piper to a Run Free field at the weekend so he can be free and we don't have to be on the lookout for other dogs. We can both relax and enjoy our time in the field. Piper has learned to use the agility equipment and loves to jump and go through the tunnel. Piper knows when we are going to a field and gets very excited. Run Free fields really have been life changing for us. I can trust Run Free fields will be secure, well equipped and maintained and it is now part of our routine to start our weekend on Friday after work with a field session”

Maintenance Assistant

An opportunity has arisen for a conscientious and enthusiastic individual to join the team at Run Free Dog Fields. Established in 2017 and with locations throughout Scotland, Run Free offers safe and secure dog walking fields.
The role of Maintenance Assistant will involve maintenance of the fields and assisting in expanding Run Free’s infrastructure. The role will involve driving to fields, cutting the grass and maintaining and enhancing the equipment. Responsibilities will also include replenishing water, emptying bins as well as litter and poo picking at the fields.
Working hours for the role of Maintenance Assistant will vary and will be longer during the summer months. We are ideally looking for someone who can commit around 3 days per week to the role. We can be flexible on which days are worked and are willing to consider students with summer availability.
Applicants for the role will need to have a clean driving licence. Previous experience of ground maintenance and the ability to drive a vehicle with a trailer is advantageous. Joinery skills to produce and maintain equipment is also desired.
The role is based near Paisley, although we may make it possible to operate from another Central Belt location for the right candidate.

*** Two new fields! ***

We have some exciting news! Our old Run Free Winchburgh site has closed down, and instead we have a shiny new Run Free Winchburgh site! The site is just off the A904, between junctions 1b and 2 of the M9. Although handily near the motorway, it’s a lovely quiet location set in farmland. It’s an easy drive from Edinburgh, Livingston and Falkirk, and just a quick trip across the Queensferry Crossing from Fife.

The new Winchburgh site has two fields, both with loading bays to allow you to park and close the outside gate before letting the dogs out of the car and into the field. There is also ample parking for around 6 cars in the car park. Both fields have a shelter and picnic table, water cans, bins and a supply of poo bags. The fencing is 6 feet high and is dug 6 inches into the ground to keep smaller dogs and diggers secure.

The Champany field is a fairly square grassed area with a gentle slope down to the far side. There is privacy screening all around the field.

The Philipstoun field is slightly larger and L shaped, with a wide track leading to the main field. This field also has a slight slope, and has trees along one side beyond the fence which will provide some extra shade and shelter.
