We hope everyone had a great Christmas!

We had a visit from the lovely Millie today. She was very ill last year and ended up in intensive care, giving us all a big fright. It’s great to see her looking well today.

We hope all our clients have a great New Year and that 2025 is a good one for all our furry, feathered and scaly friends! Thank you for your continued support in 2024.

We saw lots of beautiful cats in Tain this week, so we thought it would be a good opportunity to do a post raising awareness of the things you should look out for as your cat gets older.

WEIGHT

It’s important to monitor your cat’s weight regularly as they get into their senior years. Baby scales can be bought online fairly cheaply. You even get litter trays that weigh your cats now! Unexplained weight loss can be a sign of diabetes, hyperthyroidism (an over active thyroid), kidney disease and other illnesses.

THIRST

An increase in thirst can be a sign of diabetes, kidney disease and sometimes hyperthyroidism

APPETITE

If you notice your cat is more hungry than usual it could be a sign of diabetes or hyperthyroidism. A decreased appetite can be a sign of kidney disease or other illnesses

MOBILITY

If you notice your cat is not jumping up like they used to, or is having difficulty climbing stairs or getting into their litter tray this could be a sign of arthritis. They can also get a matted coat due to not being able to groom like they used to, and sometimes they get more grumpy

One of the cats pictured came in today for her routine vaccination and it was found she had a very fast heart rate and had lost some weight. The owners noticed she was eating a bit more than usual, so we did a blood test and diagnosed an over active thyroid. We were lucky that we caught it very quickly and we are sure she will do well with treatment🐈

These are some of the main things that is important to monitor as your cat gets older. If you have any concerns or just want a routine ‘MOT’ of your senior friend, then we are always happy to help and can perform a blood test if needed 🩺

⭐ CHRISTMAS DANGERS ⭐

Chocolate 🍫

As many people know chocolate is toxic to our pets but did you know just how toxic it can be.

Below is a link to the vets now chocolate calculator, this is an easy and quick way to find out if you need to bring your pet in to see one of our vets.

You will need the weight if your pet, the volume of chocolate consumed and the type of chocolate (white, milk or dark chocolate) 🍫

Dog chocolate toxicity poisoning can be fatal. Use our dog chocolate calculator to find out whether your dog has eaten a dangerous amount.

MEET THE TEAM MONDAY

Today we are introducing you to Claire

*What is your role within Easter Ross Vets and how long have you been part of our team?
I’m a vet, mainly based in our Tain branch. I’ve been back for just over 3 years now, but I worked at Easter Ross in 2014 when I first moved back home 👩🏽‍⚕️

*What aspect of your job do you like most?
Nothing beats the satisfaction of seeing a patient go home better after they’ve been really unwell - the little tail wag when they see their owners in the waiting room. I just love being a vet and helping people and my patients. It really is the best job in the world.

*How would your best friend describe you in 3 words?
Thorough, Dedicated & Compassionate 🥰

*Are you a coffee or tea person?
All of them, preferably warm!

*What is your favourite dog breed?
Black Labradors and Patterdale Terriers❤️

*What show are you currently binge-watching?
I don’t sit down long enough to watch tv… but love Grey’s anatomy!

*What is your favourite thing to do on the weekends?
Spending time with my husband Ewan and children Isla (7) and Alan (4), going to the gym, swimming and walking my dogs.

*What 3 items would you take to a desert island?
Assuming all the essentials are already there, I’d bring a good book, my dogs and lipsil 😆

*If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
To be able to speak to animals

*If you could be an animal for one day. Which one would it be and why?
A macaw parrot in the rainforest 🦜

*Tell us about your pets?
I’ve got Patterdale terrier called Mini, a jack Russell called Massey, a collie called Meg, and 3 Guinea pigs called Leopard, Roxy & Batman (clearly named by my children😂). We also have a herd of luing cows 🐂

*Can you play any musical instruments?
I used to play the bagpipes in the Sutherland Caledonian Pipe Band 🎼

*Can you tell us one interesting fact about yourself?
I started weight lifting around 2 years ago with a brilliant group of girls & I’m planning signing up for Hyrox next year 🏃🏽‍♀️‍➡️🏋🏽‍♀️

Anyone who keeps birds irrespective of how many must register with the Scottish Kept Bird Registry by December 1st 🗓️

This register allows vital information to be sent out regarding biosecurity information to minimise the spread of disease and help with infection control 🦠

Do I need to register ❓

You DO need to register if you have even one bird of any species whether this is a pet, farmed animal or working animal.

You DO NOT need to register psittaciformes such as budgies, parrots, cockatiels or finches providing they are kept inside with no outdoor access OR housed outside in a fully enclosed and secure house 🦅

You DO need to register if you keep your bird inside but occasionally or regularly exercised them outside 🕊️
