🔷Thistle Equine Referrals🔷
Last week we had a very wintery visit from John Marshall of Thistle Equine Referrals. We had a day full of lameness works ups ( this kept our hard working stable staff warm !) and surgeries.

We look forward to having John visit again on 17th December.

Don't forget to break the ice morning and evening. If possible, remove the chunks of ice, this will help the water stay unfrozen for longer. Preventative care is the best kind, so keep your horses drinking during this cold snap. Your outside taps need to stay wrapped up too❄️

🔷Sponsored Client - Amber and Tazz🔷
It's been a month of ups and downs for us.

I had a great time at the Sutherland Show trophy dinner where I was lucky enough to recieve 'The Rockstar Memorial Sheild' for best coloured horse or pony. I hadn't actually realised on the day I had won the shield so it was a really lovely surprise when I got the email. It's a great way to end the season and Tazzy deserves the shield for sure.

After enjoying a bit of downtime, I noticed that Tazz wasn't quite right and was slightly stiff. Phoning Kessock Vets timed in with one of their regular visits from John Marshall so Tazz was assessed quickly. Thankfully nothing was found through the investigations and work up which was reassuring. Tazz has had a good couple of weeks off to rest and he's now looking so much better. We'll have an easy winter to bring him back into work and hopefully having him flicking his feather in no time again.

I'm so lucky to have such an amazing group of equestrian professionals to help and offer their advice.

As well as vets, a big shout out to my amazing farrier and super physio!

🔷Pony Club Day 🔷

Well done to the Inverness Pony Club who we welcomed in to the Clinic on Saturday. While working towards their dentistry badge students got hands on with practical sessions and got to watch a dental while asking lots of questions. We were very impressed with their knowledge and enthusiasm to learn

🔷Clipping🔷
It is that time of year again when our horsey friends become so fluffy ready for the cold months ahead ❄️. It is the time we dust off the clippers and dig out the waterproofs and get our big coats on ready for some winter riding.

We would love to see some fun clipping patterns/designs on your horses. Post your photos in the comments below.

🔷Winter Checklist from Hestevard 🔷
As temperatures drop, your horse’s needs begin to change.
Less grass, more hay – cooler days, slower muscles.
The change of season always calls for a little extra attention.
💚 We’ve put together a few key points to keep an eye on this winter:
🥕 Check the ration
As the grazing season ends, energy requirements change. It’s worth reviewing protein, fibre and trace element levels and adjusting the feeding plan if needed.
💧 Monitor water intake
Cold water is often less appealing – even though hydration remains just as important. Offering warm water or soaked feeds can help encourage drinking.
🦴 Support joints & movement
In cold and wet weather, muscles and joints need more time to loosen up.
Make sure to allow a proper warm-up before increasing the intensity of your training.
🧴 Keep an eye on the coat
The thickening winter coat means extra metabolic work. Zinc, copper and biotin support skin, coat and hoof health during this demanding phase.
🌾 Ease stomach & digestion
More hay means a different feed structure – and a shift for the digestive system. Good feed hygiene and plenty of fibre help maintain a balanced gut.
Small adjustments in feeding and routine can make a big difference – especially when the weather turns cold and damp. 💚
