Did you know we perform cataract surgery at SVR?
Cataracts can develop due to diabetes, retinal disease, trauma, age or they can be inherited.
There is no simple medical treatment option available and surgery remains the only option for cataracts that interfere with vision 🐶
An initial consultation with one of our Veterinary ophthalmologists will determine if your pet is a candidate for surgery - If so medications will be started at least 1 week prior to the procedure 💊
The surgical technique is the same as that used in people. A small cut is made at the edge of the cornea to allow entry into the eye. A circular window is cut in the capsule that surrounds the lens and an ultrasonic probe is inserted into the lens which vibrates at high frequency to break the lens into small pieces (phacoemulsification) which are then sucked out. This leaves an empty capsular bag which an artificial intraocular lens can now be inserted. The original entry cut is stitched with very small dissolvable stitches.
Aftercare is very important and patients will go home with various eye drops, painkiller and anti-inflammatory medications. Most patients will remain on a small number of these for life 🐕
Special thanks to Pico & Buddy's owners for allowing us to share this video 💙🩵
