Pico and Buddy's Bilateral Phacoemulsification 👀
❗️Warning Surgical Images ❗️
Did you know we perform cataract surgery at SVR?
Cataracts can develop due to diabetes, retinal disease, trauma, age or they can be inherited.
There is no simple medical treatment option available and surgery remains the only option for cataracts that interfere with vision 🐶
An initial consultation with one of our Veterinary ophthalmologists will determine if your pet is a candidate for surgery - If so medications will be started at least 1 week prior to the procedure 💊
The surgical technique is the same as that used in people. A small cut is made at the edge of the cornea to allow entry into the eye. A circular window is cut in the capsule that surrounds the lens and an ultrasonic probe is inserted into the lens which vibrates at high frequency to break the lens into small pieces (phacoemulsification) which are then sucked out. This leaves an empty capsular bag which an artificial intraocular lens can now be inserted. The original entry cut is stitched with very small dissolvable stitches.
Aftercare is very important and patients will go home with various eye drops, painkiller and anti-inflammatory medications. Most patients will remain on a small number of these for life 🐕
Special thanks to Pico & Buddy's owners for allowing us to share this video 💙🩵

Scottish Vet Referrals and Acupet Vet want to introduce this sweet cuddly boy, Bear 🐕🦺💕
Many people ask if acupuncture is painful or uncomfortable for the dog or cat. This is Bear comfortably demonstrating that the acupuncture needles cause no harm or trauma.
Bears family started acupuncture as a complimentary therapy following his spinal surgery to help reduce inflammation and tension, improve circulation for healing and reduce neuropathic pain. Bear has done so well following his surgery and has been wonderful in his acupuncture sessions.

Scottish Vet Referrals wants to share this heart warming story. When Dominique from Acupet Vet Scotland looked back on her 8 year veterinary career, never did she expect to be treating dogs and cats with acupuncture.
She was sceptical about acupuncture as she had no experience to prove it would work but time and time again your wonderful pets prove to her that it makes a life changing improvement for her patients and that is worth more than words can explain.
This is Bella, her family noticed she was struggling to get around and had made many adjustments for her to help her cope with her difficulties. It’s heart breaking to see your pet struggle and so gratifying to see them improve. Well done Bella, Scottish Vet Referrals is so proud of you and the wonderful lovely lady you are. Dominique wishes you many wonderful walks and happy pain free moments and memories.
Contact Scottish Vet Referrals if you have any questions or if you simply want to just find out more on it’s benefits for your pet.

This is Bruxa, one of our regular patients. She is a lovely natured Italian Spinone who is always so happy to see us when she comes in for chemotherapy treatment. This is a short video clip sped up of her treatment. 🐶💉🐾
This is our CT scanner in use today.
Computed Tomography (CT) is a powerful diagnostic tool which takes multiple x-ray images, enabling us to build up a 3D picture. Our top of the range 64 slice CT Scanner is housed in a special lead-lined building used exclusively for this purpose
The patient can be monitored through the window by staff while the scan is being taken.

Look at Clunie, he looks so happy with himself after being signed off.
Clunie came to us as an emergency, he was diagnosed with glaucoma.
This is when the intra ocular pressure in the eye is high and this can be very painful. If medical treatment cannot bring the pressure down the eye would need to be removed.
