⚠️ ⚠️ GRAPHIC POST WARNING! ⚠️ ⚠️
**This post contains graphic pictures and video footage of a surgical nature, which do contain images showing blood. Please scroll past if you do not wish to see content of this type **

Meet Ruby, a lovely Gordon Setter who came to see Simon, our Internal Medicine Clinician, with a distended abdomen. It was suspected that this was a mass.

We carried out in-house blood work then performed a CT scan, using our very own scanner on site.

From the second picture below you can see there was in fact a very large abdominal mass, which was originating from Ruby's spleen.

After discussion with the owners they opted for surgery and were then referred to our surgeon Marija.

Surgery was preformed the same day and we removed a staggering 8kg mass!!!!!

No one at the practice has seen a mass that large being removed from an animal.

We are delighted to report that Ruby has recovered well at home after surgery. ❤️

VET NURSE AWARENESS MONTH: Q&A with Lisa

May is Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month, a whole month dedicated to raising awareness of the veterinary nursing profession and the vital role they play in animal care and treatment.

Over the next few weeks we are going to post our Q&A’s with the nursing team.

Our Nurse Manager Lisa kindly took the time to tell us about life as a vet nurse.

How long have you been a vet nurse and what training did you have to do to achieve your qualifications?

I qualified in 2006 – so I am 18 years qualified.
I spent 1 year studying Pre-Vet Nursing in Thurso, 6 months at Barony College, followed by 3 years at Edinburgh’s Telford College.

What attracted you to a career as a vet nurse?

I originally wanted to go down the equine route, then discovered vet nursing. I was always that kid that wanted to save the birds that flew into windows, had pet lambs, and always loved a variety of animals (although I do have a fear of birds now).

What are the best things about being a vet nurse?

The difference we can make to our patients and their families whilst they are staying with us is massive. I love the variety of work we have and never knowing what’s coming through the door next – everyday is different.
I also love training future vet nurses and watching their confidence grow. You can progress on to different things depending on your interests.

What kind of attributes do you need to be a good vet nurse?

• Hardworking
• Caring
• Compassionate
• Good at multitasking
• Good communicator
• Motivated
• Approachable
• Work well in a team and individually
• Organised
• Forward thinking
• Use your initiative
• Be prepared for long shifts, long nights and minimal breaks

What advice would you give someone thinking about a career as a vet nurse?

Its hard work so be prepared to work hard. I used to watch my flat mates go out at weekends while I sat and studied or wrote up my case studies.
If you get a placement, take the opportunity to ask questions, show an interest and learn as much as you can! I highly recommend nursing, it’s amazing!

What are the best things about working at Scottish Vet Referrals?

The team we have are brilliant! We work hard but try to have fun as we go along. The variety of disciplines we have, I have learnt a lot since being here, and continue to learn new skills.

This week is veterinary receptionist week and we would like to celebrate our wonderful admin team. They play a vital role.in the running of the practice and we would be lost without them.

Here's a few words from our team about why they love their job.

“Receptionist is a challenging role, as the waiting room is often a very busy environment and the role involves a lot of multitasking. However, I love the interaction with clients and getting to know them and their pets. Speaking with clients after their appointments and hearing that the outcome has been positive, and that we have been able to help their pet, is my favourite part of the job” Megan

"I love my job! I get to spend a lot of my time meeting & greeting lovely animals (and their owners!). Helping make their visit as stressless as possible is important to me." Rachel

As vet admin my role is busy and varied dealing with both clients, vets and other practices from first point of contact with our lovely clients or Vets from the initial referral, information giving, booking them in right through to the end dealing with insurances. I love meeting all the animals and their owners. Jenni

This is Dominique our dermatologist and acupuncturist.

Dominique has always had a love for animals from a young age, and feels blessed to have a career with animals. Her family and pets are her world.

She worked with vets in her home country in South Africa on Rhino 🦏 recovery projects during her veterinary studies and moved to Scotland permanently after her studies and just loves Scotland so so much, the bag pipes playing make her feel very emotional.

Dominique loves being a vet and helping to treat pets, support her clients and colleagues and lives by a quote by Steve Jobs- “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.” ❤️

Who are we?

We are an independent veterinary referral centre based on the new UHI campus in Inverness.

We offer referrals in ophthalmology Monday to Friday, with Tony Wall or Kirsten Macleod. Our consultations as standard are 30 minutes long, allowing us plenty of time to hear from you about your pets medical history, to carry out a detailed exam and create a treatment plan.

Our Internal Medicine and Oncology service is run weekly on a Tuesday with visiting vet Simon Bate. Simon offers a comprehensive service to investigate a variety of medical and oncological conditions.

We also receive visits every month from cardiologist, Craig Devine, and surgeon, Richard Coe.
