A huge thank you to everyone who attended our CPD evening at Smithton Free Church on Monday 31st March! We truly appreciate your support.

A special thank you to our speakers, Donald Yool, Soft Tissue Surgeon and Roberto Bergamaschi, Orthopaedic Surgeon and Neurology Consultant, for their informative and engaging presentations and Moray Canine Hydrotherapy, who were providing information on their services.

We'd also like to apologise for the technical issue with the live streaming on our YouTube channel. We managed to rectify the problem in time for Donald's talk, which is available online here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AvWZruG8h64&t=771s, and we're working on getting Roberto's uploaded soon.

Keep your eyes peeled for our next CPD event!

We had a very interesting case with Charlie originally being referred to us back in mid-2024 following a suspected traumatic pe*******on of the left orbit. After treatment involving antibiotics, eyedrops, and painkillers, his owners reported that his eye seemed to be back to normal. It took many months before signs of a retrobulbar infection showed up, and it was only recently that there was any visible difference in his eyes. It was at this point we performed a CT Scan.

The scan revealed a linear foreign body approximately 5cm long caudal to the left eye, which was a bit of a surprise! This presentation is rarely seen and access to this location is difficult. The concern was that it would not be possible to access the foreign body without losing his eye. Thanks to our soft tissue specialist, Donald Yool, the stick was successfully removed and his eye was saved!

Charlie is a happy boy again, here’s a lovely photo of him enjoying a walk on the beach.

PET OF THE MONTH - MARCH 2025

Flori came to see Simon, our Advanced Practitioner in Small Animal Internal Medicine, for treatment following her diagnosis of mass cell tumours.
She started treatment in August 2024 followed by surgery in November 2024 performed by Donald Yool a European and RCVS Specialist in Small Animal Soft Tissue Surgery and today Flori completed her chemotherapy!
We are happy to report that Flori has recovered well with all her treatment.

I’m sure we can all agree that is deserving of the Pet of the Month title!

A huge thank you to everyone who has got in touch about the study so far. We have received lots of questions asking if you can take part if you're not local - yes you can! The samples are submitted by post, so we can accept dogs from anywhere in the UK. Please contact Antionia Pritchard for more information.

Do you own a Scottish Terrier? If so, would you like to be involved in a research project which is studying a way to detect tumours quicker in the breed? Whether your dog has been diagnosed with a tumour or not, we would be grateful to anyone wishing to take part.

Scottish Terriers are at increased risk of a type of bladder tumour called Transitional Cell Carcinoma (TCC) in comparison to other breeds. Our Oncologist, Simon Bate, is the lead veterinary surgeon on a research project which is looking to create a new test using urine from Scottish Terriers to help diagnose cases of TCC earlier.

If you have a Scottie dog, and would be willing to collect a sample of their urine and complete a questionnaire, then please email Dr. Antonia Pritchard: [email protected]

Who are we?

We are an independent veterinary referral centre based on the new UHI campus in Inverness.

We offer referrals in ophthalmology Monday to Friday, with Tony Wall or Kirsten Macleod. Our consultations as standard are 30 minutes long, allowing us plenty of time to hear from you about your pets medical history, to carry out a detailed exam and create a treatment plan.

Our Internal Medicine and Oncology service is run weekly on a Tuesday with visiting vet Simon Bate. Simon offers a comprehensive service to investigate a variety of medical and oncological conditions.

We also receive visits every month from cardiologist, Craig Devine, and surgeon, Richard Coe.
