Please DO NOT leave pumpkins in our woodlands and greenspaces.

🦔 There is a lot of misinformation online about leaving pumpkins as food for wildlife. Although people mean well, pumpkins are toxic to hedgehogs and they are not a natural food source for UK wildlife. If a pumpkin disappears from the woods, it is not because it was eaten, it it because it has been tidied-up.

🚯 Any pumpkins that are left in the woods simply go mouldy and begin to rot, leaving a horrible smelly mess. In previous years, some of the pumpkins we have found left in our woodlands appear to have been painted with glossy paint, which will not break down in the environment. Leftover tealights/candles will also not break down and instead remain as litter, which can harm wildlife.

♻️ Instead of leaving your old pumpkins in woodlands, please remember to dispose of them properly by placing them in your food recycling bin or your own personal compost heap. Leaving them in woodlands is littering, which is illegal.

Celebrating Diwali the festival of lights
Kukur Tihar...

In Nepal, Asia, Sunday the 27th of October starts off the 5 day Hindu festival of ‘Diwali’ or the ‘Festival Of Lights’ as it’s known, this celebrates the relationship that humans have with all things.

Each day of the 'Diwali Festival' focuses on something different that varies depending on one denomination of Hinduism to another. In Nepal, the festival of Diwali is called “Tihar” on the second day of Tihar, there is “Kukur Tihar” otherwise known as the “Day Of The Dogs” This is a celebration for all dogs to thank them for their unique and special relationships that they have with the people of Nepal.

In ancient Hindu texts, dogs are depicted as loyal companions, helpers of humans, and as guardians and messengers. The dogs were said to watch over the gates of Naraku, the Hindu concept of hell. Perhaps this is why our dogs also insist on hanging around outside the bathroom door.

Nepalese dogs, both those with homes and those who are strays on the streets, are celebrated and thanked for their friendship and loyalty on this special day. They are offered flower garlands and yummy, delicious food to acknowledge the close relationship between people and dogs. They are also marked with a tika, A tika is a red mark applied to the forehead, as a sign of sacredness. The tika acts as a blessing to those who encounter dogs during the day of Kukur Tihar.

This truly is a beautiful and amazing way to show dogs just what they mean to us. Even though every day is a blessing to have our amazing dogs in our lives. ❤️🐶❤️ All dogs deserve to be spoiled rotten, I'm sure you agree. Dogs are part of our family always.
