HAPPY VALENTINES DAY 2025

Did you know Dogs can fall in love 🐩💘🐕

Anthropologist Elizabeth Marshall Thomas, author of The Social Lives of Dogs, who believed two dogs named Sundog and Bean were agonized star-crossed lovers kept apart because neither of their owners wanted to give them up.

Professor Paul Zak from the University in California, found that a dog’s brain releases oxytocin - the love hormone - when it interacts with humans and dogs, just the same as a human brain does when we hug or kiss.

PERMISSION TO SHARE -:

A WARNING : OUR PUP IS, THANKFULLY, ABSOLUTELY FINE ... BUT OUR CARELESSNESS COULD HAVE BEEN FATAL. IRON POISONING CAN BE LETHAL!

As keen skiers / hillwalkers, we have used these disposable hand warmers for years. Thoroughly recommend ... you just expose them to air, and the chemical reaction between oxygen and the contents (iron powder, activated charcoal and water) provides an exothermic reaction; they really do provide up to ten hours heat, so it is not uncommon for us to pop them in our gloves for our morning walk, and then keep using them throughout the day when we nip out for “garden visits”.

My wife noticed, last night, that one of the sachets had disappeared off the side ... and that our pup was being awfully quiet in my study! A quick dash through and there were the remains of a demolished bag, and a sooty patch on the carpet.

Knowing that the contents were “just” iron and activated charcoal (and water) I wasn’t too concerned, but thought I should check the tiny small print on the packaging, which just says to KEEP AWAY FROM CHILDREN AND PETS. No major hazard warning. So still not panicking!

But a quick websearch of vets pages reveals that Iron poisoning can be fatal, with just 60mg / kg body weight (ie several lethal doses in each package!) leading to major organ failure and death, unless very prompt action is taken by vets.

Thankfully this happened right at the end of the day, when the chemical reaction was almost complete, so the advice was that the toxicity of the iron would have all been inactivated. But had it been earlier in the day, when the sachets were “fresh” then it would likely have been a very different outcome!

Moral of the story ... if you are using these hand warmers, please make sure your dog doesn’t pinch them, and dispose of them VERY carefully!

DOGS OF THE SEA
What do you do if you spot a seal on the beach? Whilst seals spend a lot of time at sea, they do like to spend time on land as well. It's quite common to see seal pups on beaches too - the mothers leave them there while they look for food, they do keep an eye on them from time to time.

If you find a seal or seal pup on the beach please:

• Do not approach them – they can attack and injure if they feel threatened.
• Keep dogs on a lead – seals are easily panicked by dogs.
• Leave seal pups where they are – mothers will abandon a pup if it has been disturbed.

If the seal has not moved within four hours of first spotting it, please contact the Scottish SPCA helpline on 03000 999 999 or the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) on 01825 765546 (weekdays 9-5) or 07787 433412 (outside office hours).

If, while still maintaining a safe distance away from the seal, you can see that there are obvious signs of injury, e.g. bleeding or generally looking unwell, or if it’s a pup still with its white, fluffy coat, then call one of the above helplines immediately.

To all walkers/ countryside users
If you happen to come across a sheep lying on its back with its legs up, it is 'cast'. Please be so kind as to tip/roll it back over (YOU MAY GRAB WOOL (it won't hurt them) AND HOLD TO STEADY THEM BEFORE RELEASE). If left like this they can die as they cannot get up 🥺. This is especially important this time of year as most 'cast' sheep will be carrying lambs, hence their struggle to get to their feet.
Please be kind enough to share.
