I know I know there is a month for everything! But what better opportunity to remind you that now the weather is finally resembling Summer to take water out for your dogs.
Dogs should drink on average between 60-80mls of water/ kg of bodyweight in a 24 hour period. Obviously this is effected by heat and the level of activity of the dog.
For example a 10kg should have between 600ml -800ml of water a day.

Is your dog drinking enough? What ways do you use to encourage your dog to drink?

Let's talk jumping up.

many breeds like to have springs for legs so jumping up can be a real bugbear for owners.

if you want dogs to not jump up at visitors, strangers and family it needs to be a really consistent front from everyone.
If they ever jump up and get any sort of positive out of it the behaviour will continue. We as people are pants at consistency let's be honest. When you come home from work do you absentmindedly give them a fuss? do they jump up at you when your sat down and get a fuss? whatever it is you need to be clear otherwise it is unfair when we tell them not to do it.

One problem with jumping up is we create a pattern of behaviour using words like off or down.

The dog jumps up, is told to get off and then praised for getting off.

in order to receive that praise in the dogs mind they have to replicate the behaviour that got the praise....which is jump up, get down then get praise.
A vicious cycle!

Instead I use the word leave as I never want their paws to touch me unless invited.
The key is to not praise the moment they get down but instead wait a decent amount of time like minutes before then giving them any sort of other interaction.

Show them a better behaviour like waiting on their bed and after a while reward that.

Ignoring jumping up rarely works as the dogs end up trying harder to get your attention and you may even get barking too out of frustration.

Dogs are fairly simple creatures in the respect of whatever is of benefit to them they do more of and what is of no benefit they do less.
Make sure you are paying into behaviours you like and help them see what better behaviours are where necessary.

Dogs arent naughty on purpose they just need to be taught how to practice self control and complete desired behaviours.

We are often asked what type of tool or piece of equipment will stop my dog pulling......

the answer is none!

A dog will only learn to walk nicely when you teach them how. Putting equipment on to prevent them pulling like headcollars or other things that make it uncomfortable to pull and only manage the issue. The dog never learns about lead pressure and that it's rewarding to walk with you.

When the dog is an established puller and management equipment is used to control the dog safely that is another thing but going back to basics in a safe environment is your best option. Building a reward history and making heelwork fun and engaging is the best way to achieve good loose lead walking.

Remember repartition builds habit and if you let your dog practice pulling, this becomes habit.

If you would like some guidance to help get your pulling pooch to walk on a lead better, then get in touch.
