Easily mistaken for great t**s, coal t**s can be told apart by a white stripe running down the back of the head and light brown flanks. Feeders filled with energy-rich foods such as peanuts are a sure way to encourage them into your garden this winter.⁣

🐦 Redwings 🐦

come to visit between October and March from Iceland and Scandinavia, to feed on tree berries. Identifiable by a creamy stripe over the eye and their namesake red markings under the wing, the redwing is Britain’s smallest thrush.

If your garden is lacking in naturally occurring berries, try using berry suet to entice them to your tables.

Out in the garden this weekend? Here is your 🐦

A plump bird, the nuthatch is about the size of a great tit and is identifiable by its blue-grey above and whitish below, with chestnut on its sides and under its tail. It also has a black stripe on its head and a long, black-pointed bill. Feeding mainly on insects, it will happily visit bird tables to feast on hazelnuts, acorns and seeds.

Did you know, barn owls have such good hearing that they can locate prey by sound alone.

Their ears are particularly good at detecting the high-frequency sounds emitted by small mammals moving in vegetation. Experiments have shown that can capture prey in total darkness by hearing alone.
