ADOPTED
Name : Shep
Breed : German Shepherd Dog
Age : 1-2 years old
Gender : Neutered, male
Location : Kennels, Cumnock
Can Shep live with :-
Cats - yes
Other dogs - yes following successful introduction
Children - Ages 10+

UPDATE : October 2024

Shep is flourishing and is well engaged with his training programme. He has been to Dumfries House where he sadly, didn't meet King Charles!

He walks beautifully on the lead, knows sit, paw, lie and wait. He is not keen walking on uneven or stoney ground, much preferring grass or tarmac. He travels well in the car.

His best friend at the kennels is Cole and they play well together.

More about Shep
Shep came to us from local stray kennels having been left unclaimed. He is a young boy who has had very little education prior to his entry into kennels. Since being with Islay Dog Rescue he has shown what a complex, yet simple, character he is.

We believe Shep to be from a working line of German Shepherds as he displays intensive drive and enthusiasm. He is extremely quick to learn but, like most adolescent, large, male dogs he needs frequent reminders of acceptable behaviour. His plus points very much outweigh his negative points. Specifically he can walk beautifully on the lead, focus during training sessions, sit when asked and wait for a short period of time. On the other hand we have identified a couple of areas that need more focussed work.

What type of home would suit Shep?
At the moment Shep is taking part in a training programme at Islay Dog Rescue so would only be available to an experienced home who could demonstrate their willingness to continue with this training.

Shep is fully vaccinated, neutered, has been treated for parasites, is microchipped, vet checked and assessed. His adoption fee is £400 which goes directly to helping save the lives of other dogs just like him.

If you are interested in applying to adopt Shep please complete the application form below https://www.islaydogrescue.org.uk/adoption-questionnaire Also, please read the general breed information below to assess whether his breed characteristics match your lifestyle.

General Breed Information
With a lifespan of 9-13 years and a medium to large size dog coupled with its intensive drive it does not make the German Shepherd dog an easy family pet. They were originally bred as a herding dog and these innate traits are still very obvious today. GSDs are intelligent, stubborn, alert, obedient and protective of their families – they are also very driven dogs. Any GSD owner must consider the amount of time it will take for the dog to be trained and become part of the family set up. They are not the sort of dogs to rest on their laurels once they know how to sit and give a paw! Given that they were originally herding dogs it should also be considered that movement can stimulate excitement so they can be triggered by cyclists, moving cars, running etc.
