The first cases of bluetongue virus this season have been confirmed on premises in Norfolk, Suffolk, and Essex.

👉While the risk of transmission to the rest of the UK is currently 'medium', it is important to be aware of the clinical signs of BTV and the actions to be taken of you suspect this notifiable disease.

Clinical signs of bluetongue virus include:
• 🐑 In sheep: mouth and nose ulcers, drooling, nasal discharge, swollen lips, tongues, heads and coronary band, fever or lameness
• 🐄 In cattle: lethargy, erosions or soreness of lips, nose, coronary band or tears, fever, anorexia, or abortion (signs are often more subtle)

📲If you suspect bluetongue virus in your stock, contact APHA immediately on 03000 200 301.

This enormous calf didn't know which way it was coming, upside down, backwards and with mum having a torsion too - luckily, vet Isobel, was on hand to deliver this beast safely 👏🐮🥰

Look at these gorgeous piglets Immy has been out to see recently 😍🐷😴

Piglets are born with low iron reserves, and due to large litter sizes they can't always access enough from the Sow's milk alone.
Supplementing them with injectable iron prevents them from developing anaemia in the first week of life & encourages healthy growth 🐽

Royal Cheshire County Show was, as usual, a fantastic event 👏🐮 The weather stayed dry & on the Wednesday the sun was shining all day ☀️

A huge thank you to the organisers of the show for putting it altogether🥰

We'd also like to thank each and every one of our clients who came by our stand and enjoyed a refreshment on us and had a good natter - it was lovely to see so many friendly faces 😍

We are very proud sponsors of the Cheshire Farm Chat, being held at the Royal Cheshire Show Agri-Centre.

Our two guest speakers will be discussing the macro-economic environment driving milk prices and the work being undertaken at a national level to stabilise the market. Expect conversations about milk purchasers, contracts and disease outbreak risks such as Bluetongue and Schmallenberg.

Our vet Immy has a keen interest in reindeer and has been out castrating some recently 🦌

➡️ Sedation and castration of reindeer must be done under a general anaesthetic, which is reversed once the procedure is complete.
This can be done in place of hormonal contraception.

As the antler growth cycle is influenced heavily by testosterone, males can develop a variety of antler abnormalities after castration - including failing to shed their own velvet/ cast their antlers in late Autumn/ early Winter.
