A List Of Things That Can Affect The Quality Of A Clip.

1) Cleanliness.
If the horses' coat is not clean, the clippers can snag at the hair and leave an uneven finish due to grease patches.

2) Blades.
If the blades are blunt, incorrectly tensioned, or the wrong type for the coat they're being used for, then the finish will also be compromised.

3) Condition and nutrition.
The horses weight and condition can also affect clip quality. It is extremely difficult to keep even pressure over an overweight horse with wobbly bits, just as much as it is difficult on one which is ribby.
Nutrition is also a consideration. A horse who has been roughed off for winter and is nutritionally lacking will have a dry, dull coat, which will not look as good as one who is receiving a well balanced diet and plenty of grooming.

4) Skin health.
A horse with an underlying skin issue like lice, sweat rash or prior allergic reaction is less likely to clip well, as any existing rash is likely to be temporarily exasperated by the additional friction of clipping, although it will then heal quicker as clipping allows owner access to treat.

5) Technique.
Even pressure is something that takes time to master, and learning to change direction with the hair over whorls and such isn't always easy. Using a different type machine can take time to get accustomed to. Many people struggle going from A2 to A5 types because of the change in angle the machine needs to be held.

This month, we're shining a light on female health topics with our Female Health February campaign ❤️

Equestrian sport is widely known – and appreciated – for offering male and female athletes an equal playing field on which to compete. However, being a female equestrian does come with some unique challenges, regardless of the level you participate in – whether that’s planning your riding around your periods, finding the right sports bra to make sitting trot bearable, or the impact of pregnancy on your time in the saddle.

Throughout this month, you can expect podcast episodes, infographics and advice on a range of female health topics that can effect equestrians, both in the saddle and in their daily lives, including...

✨ Hormones and the menstrual cycle
✨ Breast health and bra fit
✨ Pregnancy and pelvic floor
✨ Nutrition and body image

Make sure you're part of the conversation by following our social media feeds and website 👉 https://bit.ly/BEF_FemaleHealthFebruary

Something that's been discussed as part of today's Equine Health Week 2024 topic of worms and parasites is the benefits of using a targeted worming programme to avoid unnecessary treatment – which can also help to support the entire UK equine population and the environment, too 🔬

Here's an example of what a targeted programme might look like for your horse...

🪱 faecal worm egg counts every 12 weeks through spring, summer and autumn to test for redworm and ascarids
🪱 saliva tests for tapeworm in spring and autumn
🪱 a blood test in winter to test for encysted redworm, with treatment given if needed
🪱 reduction testing used at least once a year to check for wormer resistance

Not every horse is the same, so it's always best to work with your vet or an SQP to design the perfect bespoke programme for your horse's individual needs and parasite risk profile.

For more information about targeted worming, check out today's podcast episode 👉 https://bit.ly/BritishEquestrian_EHW24
