Cold Weather and Dog Walking

“Most people know the dangers of walking their dogs in the summer: The heat, the burning sidewalk, the dehydration...but walking your dog in the winter can be just as dangerous. Indeed, depending on your dog’s size, age, coat, and health, cold temperatures could be detrimental to their well-being. Before you step outside during these colder months, consider whether it’s safe for your pup.”

The current weather forecast is predicting some very low temperatures.

This means potentially dangerous conditions for small and short coat breeds. For larger breeds, especially those with short coats, exposure will be minimised to protect paws as the conditions have potential to cause harm. Large ears can be frost bitten, again especially in short coat breeds.

In this weather I always have concerns about wetness, mud and snow affecting the dogs paws. With low temperature these can cling to and freeze around paws with the potential to damage flesh. Avoiding bad ground conditions, keeping exposure short, and wiping/warming paws is very important.

My focus will be to keep the dogs safe from cold injuries and the risk of hypothermia.

Depending on your dogs breed I will modify their walks to keep them safe from harm. For the smallest dogs it is probably best that they have a short toilet walk only or better still they should miss sessions when the cold is a risk and stay at home.

Home alone Dogs that are normally with me for extended walks will be suitably exercised in sheltered conditions and kept dry and warm in the van with me.

Doggie coats and jumpers are advised. Please have them on or to-hand so I can dress them when I collect. Please let me know if you you want your dog to stay at home during the worst weather. I don’t charge for walks that do not take place. Please stay safe.

Have you ever considered the dangers of walking your dog in the winter? As temperatures drop, it’s important to know when it’s too cold out to walk your dog.

A message from local supporters/workers for Guide Dogs for the blind.

We need your help!
Guide Dogs is in urgent need of volunteers in Eldwick, Gilstead, Bingley and the surrounding areas to care for trainee guide dogs.
The charity, which has a centre in Leeds, is expanding its training into the Bingley area so it can train more dogs and reduce the time people are waiting for a life-changing guide dog.
Volunteer Fosterers for the charity provide temporary homes for future guide dogs, as they complete their specialised training. Guide Dogs covers the cost of all the food, veterinary care and equipment required for each dog and provides full training and support.
Shannon Butler, Local Volunteer Attraction Coordinator at Guide Dogs, said: “This is a great opportunity for an individual or a family to care for a dog, on a temporary basis, with all the costs covered. On weekdays, the dog you are caring for will attend training sessions with a local, specialist trainer from Guide Dogs”.
We are looking for people who are home most of the day, so our guide dog trainers based locally can collect and drop off your dog from your home. Our trainers will pick up and drop off training dogs from your home between 8.30am - 9am and drop them off again between 4pm – 5pm, Monday – Friday. On evenings and weekends, and occasionally some time on a weekday, the dog will then spend time with you and enjoy time out from training sessions. Each placement would last around 8 – 10 weeks, depending on the dog’s progression.
This rewarding role is ideal for someone who works from home or is retired, but can’t commit to a dog longer term.
Please email [email protected] or head to the Guide Dogs website under the volunteering section.

To provide temporary accommodation for a dog at home on behalf of Guide Dogs and to comply with the Fosterer Agreement in relation to the welfare and handling of the dog or puppy.

Occasionally I get asked to help with rehoming dogs. It’s happened again and here is an opportunity for lovers of German Shepherd Dogs. For a very good reason, the current owner of these two 3 year old (not spayed) German Shepherds, needs to re-home them. They are brother and sister and I’ve walked another one of their sisters for the last 3 years. She is a wonderful soft and well behaved dog.

Please message me if you want to know more.
