Last week, we welcomed Jaz back to the team. Many of you will remember her from her previous role working with Yan and, more recently, from stepping in during Kirsty’s maternity leave last year.

Jaz has now returned on a permanent basis and looks forward to reconnecting with everyone over the coming months.

Please join us in giving Jaz a warm welcome back to the team!

Avian Influenza Update 🐓🦆

As of January 27th, an Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) has been declared for York and North Yorkshire in response to recent outbreaks in the area. This measure aims to control the spread of the disease.

Under the AIPZ, all bird keepers are required to implement strict biosecurity protocols and house their birds indoors. These requirements will remain in place until further notice and will be regularly reviewed as part of the Government's efforts to monitor and mitigate the risks of avian influenza.

For more detailed guidance, bird owners can visit the Government's official website at www.gov.uk/guidance/avian-influenza-bird-flu-cases-and-disease-control-zones-in-england.

If you have any concerns, please reach out to our veterinary team. We're happy to assist you.

Colostrum is essential for lambs’ survival! 🐑

Lambs are born with a small amount of energy reserves and little immunity to bacteria and viruses. Colostrum provides the lambs with all important energy and antibodies as well as growth factors and many other substances crucial for survival.

Lambs need 50ml/kg of colostrum within 4-6 hours of birth and 200ml/kg in the first 24 hours. That’s 1 litre for a 5kg lamb!
We are stocking QuickStart Colostrum here at Yan. As shown by the graph it has one of the highest rates of IgG per feed amongst other powdered colostrum's on the market.

Get in touch today to get stocked up for lambing time.

Watery mouth is an infection of new-born lambs caused by an overgrowth of E.coli in the gut. Mortality is very high so the focus must be on prevention. This is reliant upon a variety of factors but mainly: nutrition, hygiene and colostrum are key!

NUTRITION
For a ewe to produce good quality colostrum she needs to be in the correct body condition and on a diet providing her with adequate energy and protein. We can assess the suitability of the ration by taking blood samples from ewes 2-3 weeks before lambing begins.

COLOSTRUM
Lambs must receive enough good quality colostrum within a few hours of birth to protect them from watery mouth. Colostrum replacers can be useful but there is large variation between brands in the amount of antibodies supplied.

HYGIENE
The main source of E.coli is muck so good hygiene is essential for preventing watery mouth as well as other infections. Where possible disinfect pens after every use and provide clean bedding regularly. Ensure all equipment is disinfected thoroughly between uses e.g. bottles and stomach tubes. Antibiotics may be used as a last resort following diagnosis and discussion with the vet.

If you’d like to find out more about prevention of watery mouth, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Bluetongue: Myths, Vaccines and Vital Information.

Last night, Andrew, alongside Becca from Boehringer, led an evening discussion focused on the latest developments surrounding Bluetongue Virus (BTV3).

The session explored a range of crucial topics, including:

🐄Clinical Signs: Key symptoms to watch for in both cattle and sheep, emphasizing early detection and diagnosis.
🐏Industry Impact: A detailed look at how Bluetongue affects different sectors within the livestock industry, from productivity losses to trade implications.
🐂Vaccination Strategies: An overview of available vaccine options, their efficacy, and best practices for ensuring herd protection against this significant disease.

A key takeaway from the discussion was the importance of working with one of the team to assess your farm's individual risk of Bluetongue infection. This valuable exercise will help determine the best approach for you.

As always, the great pie and peas made for a fantastic supper! For more information on Bluetongue, the Ruminant Health & Welfare website is very useful or get in touch today to explore the best options for your farm.

Pre Lambing Bloods 🐏

Energy and protein demand on the pregnant ewe greatly increase in the last weeks of pregnancy.

Here at Yan we routinely carry out some simple blood tests 2-3 weeks before your lambing period to monitor energy (BHB and NEFAs), protein status (Albumin and Urea), and mineral status (magnesium).
This ensures we are sampling when demand on the ewe is high, any earlier than this and metabolic issues can be missed, but leaves enough time for adjustments to the ration to be made in time for bulk of lambing.

For those on one of our sheep memberships schemes these lab fees are included as standard, if you are not on a scheme we would still recommend us carrying out these bloods as an insurance for you having a successful lambing time.

Get in touch with one of us today if you are interested or want more information!

Disappointing Scanning Percentage?

Increased barren rate or lower scanning percentage could be an early indicator that something isn’t quite right within the flock. It is important to let us know so we can investigate this further to minimise the impact on lambing 2025.

Industry targets vary depending on system and may vary between management groups on farm, i.e. shearlings vs ewes, you will also have an idea of what is acceptable within your enterprise. The reasons for reduced scanning figures and/or high barrens are varied so best to contact the practice to discuss the findings in your flock and develop a bespoke investigation plan.
