New year started off with a bang

32 clients today same again the next 2 days . Busy year ahead for Westmorland gundogs

Boss Ruby then second in command Willow and new recruit big lad (Max) .

Top dogs showing max the ropes out picking up . Take a young dog out earlier depending on there ability and maturity. I find it helpful teaching the manners and putting the training in to reality and working stuff out .

Happy new year from Westmorland gundogs .

It’s been a great year for us with training days ,groups ,1-1s ,walked up days , trials , puppy’s and lots of days out picking up with the team

Seen such difference in so many dogs and handlers we’ve helped . We have 6 clients with wins in novice, puppy and open tests . A first in hpr trial and 2 thirds. Lots more to come for 2024

Dogs that were almost to far gone but now working on shoot days and ready for tests this next season . Meeting lots of new friends and now clients and working together.

Max ( Finno star )

Natural ability is an understatement . Max 8 months standing and watching the first drive of the day. Back out this afternoon to carry on his training after finishing the last of our 1-1s of the season .

Slow and steady was the typical direction we go for in young dogs . But when they pick it up so quick and master it you move on to the next and tick off the boxes .

As said by Nigel Mann himself “we may be blessed with a little talent but we trust our dogs and follow there lead” . A prime example was his dog Lafayette tolley placing in IGL at 18 months old

Today’s training consisted of left and right marks and memories and a couple blind placements.

keeping us in check . Wonder if the oil will help with my bald head as well ??

Henry ( donk )

Big Henry’s first official season this year and he’s now my secret weapon. Rocky start to the season but soon learnt some manners .

He was left quite late and didn’t start training till he was 2 . Purely him being very nervy and flat . Gave him plenty of time to mature and build up some drive and then started his training with the group at 2 year old . Took to everything every well already done his basic training as pup but now it was time for something more serious.

Summer of learning the ropes he was ready for the grouse season . 30 days on the grouse and countless days on the pheasant and partridge he’s taken the time role as the “secret weapon”

“ The badger” “ the pheasant finder 3000” . You could ride her in to battle and not worry at all .

A key member to the team she’s doesn’t half wind me up some days but she does her job well. Wish I had 5 of her .

On my 3rd set of water proofs this seaon and I don’t think there’s such thing as a waterproof jacket .

Me and the the team were presented with the opportunity to come pickup on and the outstanding estate that is kindly by my new pals and her head keeper husband .

Going to a shoot and looking forward to it a few days before you go and counting down the days until your next visit is a great representation of how well it’s run the people your working with and the quality of game there .

Not bad this Instagram stuff . After speaking to Tasha and realising how much alike our training methods are and then getting to work together is what it’s all about

Enjoying the recent influx in young dogs starting out the gundog career .

Most frequent asked question : I’m worried I’m doing it all wrong and ruining him /her / them 🤨 .

The only answer let them be a puppy let them build that drive up but along the way teach them discipline .

Shooting season is in full swing now . I’m cutting training back to just 2 days a week until the end of the season in feb so private message to book in on those days in Advance. Side not anyone that’s already booked in over the next 6 weeks nothing has changed training still going ahead .

Max “the big show”

4 1/2 months old and the same size willow my fully grown bitch👀👀 20kg of beef

These pups are really impressing us for a pup this age all we’re doing is manners and drive.

Manners : Just the general sit stay wait your turn

Drive : just standard marks sitting waiting patiently and being sent out on the command and bringing it back to hand . Pushing that drive to do that drill correctly and wanting the chase.

Then from noticing the drive they have from a mark now doing some small memory’s .

Every day we’re getting better by not pushing to much on him and not watering down the basics .

Couple of weeks we’ll be starting whistle work now he’s understand the verbal commands.

Hot day out on the grouse today.
Dogs are in full swing getting fitter every day we’re out . Up and out on the first drive for 9 walking of the last at 6 . 6 tired dogs 20 thousands steps and one popped tyre result 👌🏻.

Back to work until Saturday. When we’ll be heading down the road to swinton.
