Big news for dogs in Italy: they can now fly in the cabin—even large breeds.

Italy’s civil aviation authority has officially approved new rules allowing medium and large dogs to travel inside the airplane cabin with their humans.

Until now, bigger dogs almost always had to ride in the cargo hold. With this change, airlines that opt in—and follow safety requirements—can welcome them into the cabin instead.

There are guidelines. Dogs must ride in an approved carrier that can be secured to a seat or placed without blocking aisles or exits. Airlines can also set their own limits on how many pets may be onboard and may sell those spots quickly.

Some flights in Italy have already taken off with large dogs comfortably seated alongside their families, and more airlines are expected to adjust their cabins and policies soon.

Why it matters: traveling in the cabin reduces stress for dogs and owners, avoids the risks of extreme temperatures in cargo, and ensures pets stay safely with their people.

If you’re planning to fly, check your airline’s rules, book early, and prepare your dog by practicing calm time in their carrier. A little preparation makes the journey easier for everyone.

For many dogs in Italy, the words “no more cargo hold” have finally become reality.

Suki comes to me every 3 weeks and is usually is immaculate condition but a cheeky week in the kennels she was desperate to be clean again 🧼 she wasn’t up for a picture but she’s adorable none the less and always a little dream on the table 🥰
