A nice photo of Bear, We've been out doing a structured walk, This incorporates building his training into a walk, so we do, short sessions of Heel, Place, sits and downs and release.

You can also do this on a long line and build on recalls aswell.

This is very good for generalising commands in lots of different areas, building on distractions and impulse control.

In Recent days I've had local trainer criticizing my training methods on their page.

Even stating that they are concerned about using a "stuffed dog" and that I don't use real dogs for reactivity cases or provide video evidence of outcomes?

They don't get to see a full session, they are basing their opinion of a 40 second clip, of which I will take when I have brief moments in a session.

Unfortunately in this case I was unable to film the Reactivity, towards dogs and people as the dog was so distressed we needed to get her working.

I have uploaded a further clip to show that dogs are used in my training methods, we make him do tricks, run around, sit still, down, heel, and just be a dog and work the dog around different energy levels and also do this with the training dog in various static positions.

The "stuffed dog" is used to build on teaching the training dog to disengage from lots of different things, which builds up the dog to disengage from real dogs.

You'll be surprised how much a dog will react to a "toy".

As you can see from the video my methods work, the dog was very neutral around dogs and people by the end of the session, the clients were very happy with the results.

No Bribing the dog with treats, or toys, just nice simple communication, built up over alot of distractions.

Also they said to look at reviews as to which I have 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 and do provide video evidence of resultsπŸ‘

Please bear in mind this was achieved in 1 session, and I always provide homework so the client can further their training and relationship with their dog.πŸ•πŸΎπŸΆ

This was Stan's final puppy session with us, we took it up a notch this week and taught him "leave it" while in the heel command, we did this with low distraction and then gradually increased to mimicking moving prey, having a funny man, swinging leads and clinking things.

As you can see he's done really well again, not paying attention at all,

On his release he was able to go and explore all the items, if he was told to leave it, he had to come away.

We also practised this recall

Stan doesn't like the rain, so he wasn't as excited as last week.

From a puppy that wouldn't move and planted everywhere, to a puppy that is now happy and following his owner.

This session involved trying a few different techniques.

Food was a no go
He didn't like any lead pressure, this caused him to plant more.

So we went for distance with lead pressure.

This involved using a long line and fingertip pressure,

We kept a slight bit of pressure on the longline and created distance by letting it slip through the owner's fingers, soon as the dog moved towards the owner he got lots of verbal praise.

Over the space of the session we got down to the distance of a standard lead with no planting.

Next session is going to improve on his loose lead walking and introducing the start of a heel position.

Well done to his owners, for being very patient and consistent.

This was amazing progress for a puppy that just wouldn't move at all.

Happy tired doggies

Always try to have some structure for your walks,

All walks should have some, obedience, boundaries, impulse training, sniffing time, play.

Impulse control, from a leave it command, and just a bit of general training.

Not too bad for a pug

We were on a family day out in Lytham today, a lady was being dragged everywhere by her German Shepherd, he was whining and couldn't cope with his environment.

I asked if I could offer a hand in helping with his behaviour as it didn't look very pleasant to walk him.

After 15 mins we taught him a new job to stay in heel position, this helps his behaviour 10 fold.

He was still whining when stopped, I advised the lady to reward when calm or reinforce his need to work with some obedience.

Heel position is a really good thing to work on for dogs that can't cope, it gives them a job to do, staying in position, this naturally calms their behaviours and also allows them to take in the environment which is over stimulating them.

The lady was very happy, she had been dealing with this behaviour for 5 years.

Teaching the place command on different objects,

This is how I teach the place command.

The dog isn't allowed to leave until you release.
If the dog gets off, use negative reinforcement to put back on place.

16/02/2024

This is how I walk my dogs 99% of the time, if they're being neutral and calm.

I don't care if they're in front, as long as they're not pulling and engaging with me, the goal of the walk is to fulfil the dogs needs, have bonding time.

It's always good to do little tests on your walk, as you can see I threw in a random heel command, Doug complied straight away, so he got released straight away, as I didn't really need him in that position.

Practise your stays, sits and downs, heel in your walk, in random places, generalise them everywhere you go, once they're generalised start working on your durations in these commands, always train commands in low distraction areas, then gradually increase the distractions.

If your dog can't walk on a completely loose lead in certain areas, it's not ready for further training e.g heel, loose lead is the very basic criteria. Get your loose lead walking on point then you can progress to commands.

What was the goal of this training?

Doug is very food focused

Out in town with bear today, working on his loose lead walking around high distractions, he's very environment oriented, so he loses concentration easily. This is partly due to his age and the breed isn't very handler focused.

The key to overcoming this is through lead pressure and reward.

If he's not paying attention start walking in the opposite direction, this will create a pop on the lead, the dog realises you are going the other way, once the dog is paying attention to you on a loose lead, reward verbally or through food.

The positive of the lead pressure being removed and verbal is usually enough, so I only give food for choosing to look at me.

Do this in short sessions then release your dog to dog and have a sniff about, the ultimate reward for an environmentally focused dog.

We also worked on holding positions, if the dog breaks the position lead pressure comes on until they go back into your chosen position. This only has to be light pressure, we are not forcing the dog into the position.

Today I've been working with Max regarding his lunging towards other dogs, we've worked on this previously in October, but his boundaries have slipped a little.

After a quick tune-up and setting clear boundaries again, we set off into town, throughout the whole session we only had one lunge towards another dog, Max was so neutral we managed to meet a couple of dogs in a nice calm state, We also managed to pass over 15-20 dogs with a nice neutral behaviour, with no commands.

If Max engaged with his owner, he also got reinforced with some play.

No bribing with food or luring away.

For this session I let his owner do most of the lead handling as he needed a slight brush up on his skills and to put a little more trust in Max's behaviour, we did this by solely relying on lead pressure, and avoiding eye contact, this was creating a slight trust issue as to who was in charge.

Max's owner did brilliantly, I think his trust in Max has gone up, today's session has certainly proved what can be achieved with clear communication and boundaries.

At the end on the session we worked on some impulse control around footballs, this still needs some work, but now the owner has the right communication paths, in 10 mins you could see his build towards balls decreasing. Further practise this will go.

Another 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Review

Recently I've been doing a lot of impulse control work, by giving a place command, and opening doors, dropping food, kids playing.

This has improved 10 fold by using this one simple method.

Initially train the place command using food lures, once the dog knows the place command, the rules change to they're not allowed off.

We reinforce this through negative pressure, either with spacial or lead pressure, if they are about to come off they get a verbal "NO" and use spacial pressure or a lead to keep them there.

Build this up over time.

They can only come off on a release command, mine is "OK"

What reinforces the need to stay.

Heavy rewards on completion of the task, my dogs get their tea, or a toy filled with food, sometimes they are just released as freedom is also a reward, so they don't become reliant on always getting something when they come off.

These balls are ideal, the give the initial prey chase, they can eat the contents and it's mentally stimulating.

I had a lovely training session with Nell a whippet, this was for basic obedience and recall. This session was mainly building her engagement using a long line and some recall.

Nell and her owner did amazing for a 1st session, Nell was a little nervous to start off with but her confidence soon came through, with the right approaches.
