Bee Ed offers beekeeping courses, talks for adults or young people in schools and groups, bee identification days, and 'meet the bees' sessions for those who would just like to learn a little bit more about honey bees and see inside a beehive. Bee Ed has also set up and runs the Brigsteer Bee Reserve on the edge of the Lake District National Park. The nature reserve provides habitat for limestone species of plants, mammals, birds, reptiles, and of course insects.

Good to find a harvest mouse nest on the bee reserve today. Oddly, in a bag of apple tree prunings stored open to dry out in the bee shed over the summer.

In January one of the cattle had to be destroyed having, most likely, swallowed something hidden in a clump of grass. Could have been anything, we find all sorts of dropped objects but most of all we find dog poo bags pushed into wall bases, drain entrances, in hedge bases and balls thrown for dogs but not retrieved and then lost in the grass. Prepping a small field for the cattle today - today's lost dog ball (unfortunate phrase, I know) count = 2. One in the hedge edge, one lost in the grass. Neither of these were on/near the footpath.

It's not too late to join us on our Intermediate/Improvers' beekeeping course this coming Sunday March 10th 9-4.30. Feedback from previous years on www.BeeEd.org.uk The emphasis is on filling knowledge gaps for folk on the course, swarm prevention and management (it won't be long before the bees 'think' of trying the swarm idea) and a bit of a Varroa/disease update. Contact via the website.

Dry weather - we could get used to this! A chance to lay a length of hedge before the end of 'the season'. Unusual hedge laying gear - bee suits - but the bees were flying. Two pictures - we last layed this hedge in about 2010 and created the apiary. Predictably we have always wished we made it just a bit bigger. In today's picture the hives are still wearing their winter coats made out of builders' membrane.

Three days of dry weather. Finally a chance to gather the prunings from 38 apple trees and the hay meadow hedge when we cut back ready for the fencer to come.
