Happy Poetry Day everyone. Here is one from me. Maybe starting to think about winter arriving in the Lake District!

Rowan Points to its Treasure

Solitary on the high fells,
back bent against the gale’s blast
muscles knotted under bark,
cables of tendons twisting
on an anchor of wiry toes gripping
through the crust of soil
into cracks of rock.

In days that become black and white,
when crags like burnt cinder toffee
crown through a scream of snow,
it stretches a fingerpost of branches
splintered by the bite
of ice and wind

signalling hope to its cave of roots
a hollow in the storm’s howl,
a treasure hoard
barely visible,
the wisps of wool.
