Earlier this week, we joined fireworks campaigner Julie Doorne at No.10 Downing Street for the handover of a petition of over a million signatures, calling for an urgent review of legislation to prevent animals from suffering.

We were pleased to be standing next to other members of the Fireworks Working Group, including representatives from Redwings Horse Sanctuary, Dogs Trust, RSPCA and Assistance Dogs UK.

Our new statistics show there were 1,468 fireworks-related incidents involving horses between 1st November 2010 and 29th February 2024 – 49 horses died, 317 were injured and 84 people were hurt. We need change.

Fireworks season is a tough time of year for horses and other animals🐴🎆

On the evening of a firework display:
👉 Try to stay as calm as possible. If you're anxious, your horse will pick up on it.
👉 Where possible, keep your horse's routine as normal. Make sure the horse’s surroundings are safe and secure, and there is nothing protruding that they can injure themselves on.
👉 If you share a yard with other owners, consider setting up a rota to check on the horses during peak firework season. Playing music can help to soften the sound (make sure you have desensitised your horse to this beforehand).

ISLE OF WIGHT: Our BHS Isle of Wight team has a bursary scheme! We know that training and assessment fees for the BHS Career Pathway can be expensive, and that there is added cost for our island-based members who have to factor in ferry fares too, so we're offering a funding pot to try and help some members out on their journey towards a career in the equine industry.
You can apply for funding towards BHS training, assessments, travel to get to them... whether you're training for Stage 1 or the BHSI, if you're aiming for BHS qualifications and can make a case for funding, we WANT to help you!
