BHS Ride Out UK

BHS Ride Out UK The British Horse Society is the UK’s largest and most influential equestrian charity.

The British Horse Society is the UK’s largest and most influential equestrian charity working to improve equestrian access. We achieve this through an access team at our HQ in Stoneleigh, and a network of more than 200 experienced, voluntary bridleway officers, and a growing 150 Equestrian Access Groups throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The British Horse Society's Equestria

n Access Groups are an important part of our society and not only uphold our values and promote equestrian access at a grass-roots level - they can be a fun, sociable meeting place for riders, carriage drivers and horse lovers, and make a difference for future generations in their area. We encourage the groups to forge links with us, so we can work together for the common good of all horses, riders and drivers. We have nearly 150 Equestrian Access Groups affiliated to us, and would encourage anyone who has an interest in horses and would like to do more to champion equestrian access in your area, to consider joining us. Contact [email protected] or look on our website to find your nearest group. The British Horse Society cannot achieve the great successes we do without members. If you would like to join us, support our work, and reap the benefits of BHS membership, please visit our website www.bhs.org.uk.

On 26 November, Natural England invited the BHS to their Centre for Outdoor Accessibility Training near Stokenchurch, Oxfordshire to be part of a project to support highways authorities, landowners and land managers when installing gates and structures, to ensure they are optimal for accessibility and meet standards for public access. 🌳

BHS Access Field Officer, Wendy Bannerman, with her pony Rosa and Head of Access, Will Steel, attended to assist with the filming in the sunny Chiltern Hills. 🐴

The films, including overhead drone footage, highlight the need for manoeuvring space when negotiating gates and gaps on horseback. They will be a valuable resource and will be available for all to view on Natural England’s YouTube channel when completed. πŸŽ₯

Are you looking for something different to do now the winter nights have set in❓

πŸ“—If so, why not try recording and researching routes in your local area. To get a head start on researching your routes, we recommend you pick up a copy of Rights of Way, Restoring the Record by Sarah Bucks and Phil Wadey, also known as the β€˜green book’. This informative read includes helpful hints and time-saving tips on carrying out research.

We have also put together in-depth guides on Researching a Route and Recording a Right of Way , both of which you can read at home to help you as you set about protecting and recording your local routes. πŸ—ΊοΈ

Land registry fees going up soon πŸ’°πŸ†™

‼️ We have been made aware that the Land Registry fees are increasing to Β£7 per document on 9 December 2024. ‼️

So, why does this matter?

The increase will add significantly to the costs of certifying a Definitive Map Modification Order (DMMO) application where there are multiple landowners, and you need to refer to HM Land Registry (HMLR) for their details.
Whilst it is not a requirement to have certified a Definitive Map Modification Order application to have it added to the Council’s statutory register of such applications, certification should be the trigger for them to start investigating it. Certification involves you notifying affected landowners and occupiers of your application, and then sending a certificate to the council to confirm that fact. πŸ—ΊοΈ

To identify the landowners, you often need to obtain title documents from HM Land Registry – a title register and a title plan. These are available online, currently for a fee of Β£3 per document, however on 9 December 2024, the fees are going to increase to Β£7 per document. πŸ“„

If you have outstanding applications that you wish to certify in the near future, then it may be worth trying to get that done before the increase!
As part of the financial support for applicants through Project 2026, funded by British Equestrian and Sport England, there is a Β£25 payment available for certification costs but the increase in HMLR fees will obviously make a significant dent in that. See bhs.org.uk/2026 for a reminder of the financial support available.
If you want some help in using the online Land Registry resources, email us at [email protected]. πŸ“©

We all love getting out into the countryside with our beloved furry friends, but it is important that we know our routes before we set off. 🐴

The best way to do this and be prepared is to plan ahead and use maps and local signs to help you find your way. Stay on marked paths, even if they’re muddy, unless wider access is available, such as on open access land. This helps to protect crops and wildlife and get to know the signs and symbols used in the countryside. They help you identify routes for different users through the countryside. πŸ’š

πŸ’ƒπŸ» Bridleway clearance success πŸ’ƒπŸ»

A section of Bridleway S39/33, Piddlehinton, Dorset, had become completely overgrown with vegetation and unusable for horse riders for many years. πŸ‚

A local rider got in contact with the BHS to ask for advice on how to get the bridleway cleared. Philip Hackett, Access Field Officer for the South West, contacted Dorset Council countryside Ranger Team, who quickly set about getting the route cleared. πŸ‘πŸ»

Last week the local rider who originally reported the obstruction rode the route for the first time since it had been cleared and added, β€œI’d like to thank the BHS Access team, and the Dorset Council countryside Ranger Team, for getting the stretch of previously overgrown and blocked bridleway on S39/33 at Piddlehinton, back open. This section has been blocked for many years, so it’s great to have access to it again. We now have a safe route which links up with the existing bridleway.” 😊
