BHS Ride Out UK

BHS Ride Out UK The British Horse Society is the UK’s largest and most influential equestrian charity.

The British Horse Society is the UK’s largest and most influential equestrian charity working to improve equestrian access. We achieve this through an access team at our HQ in Stoneleigh, and a network of more than 200 experienced, voluntary bridleway officers, and a growing 150 Equestrian Access Groups throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The British Horse Society's Equestria

n Access Groups are an important part of our society and not only uphold our values and promote equestrian access at a grass-roots level - they can be a fun, sociable meeting place for riders, carriage drivers and horse lovers, and make a difference for future generations in their area. We encourage the groups to forge links with us, so we can work together for the common good of all horses, riders and drivers. We have nearly 150 Equestrian Access Groups affiliated to us, and would encourage anyone who has an interest in horses and would like to do more to champion equestrian access in your area, to consider joining us. Contact [email protected] or look on our website to find your nearest group. The British Horse Society cannot achieve the great successes we do without members. If you would like to join us, support our work, and reap the benefits of BHS membership, please visit our website www.bhs.org.uk.

Why not head over to Monsal Trail in Derbyshire 😊

This trail begins in the famous town of Bakewell and is based on the former Manchester to London Midland Railway Line. This multiuser route is linear and covers around 14km, offering views of the limestone dales and the Headstone Viaduct. 🐴

You can find the route is available on an OS Explorer Map, or on the OS App, where you can see the route highlighted https://bit.ly/40D5VAL

In England and Wales, even if you’re using your favourite route to hack out regularly – this doesn’t mean that your route is recorded and protected! 🌳

Here are our three simple steps on how to check your routes:

1️⃣Your first port of call is an Ordnance Survey Explorer 1:25,000 scale map. Hard copies of OS maps can be bought from many websites, bookshops, or outdoor activity centres, or they can be viewed for free at most local libraries.
Alternatively, you can view the Ordnance Survey map for free by using Bing Maps. To view the Ordnance Survey overlay.
2️⃣If your route isn’t marked as a Bridleway, Restricted Byway or a Byway Open to All Traffic, or if it is marked as something different to what you expected, you can double check on your local authority’s map. Type your council’s name and ‘Rights of Way map’ into your search engine or contact their Rights of Way Department. Again, if your route is marked correctly, it’s safe and protected.
3️⃣If you have followed these steps and you do not think the route you ride is recorded correctly, you can log your route with us by using the form below or alternatively you can find out how to save the route yourself by reading our ‘2026 Toolkit’.

Knowing the law about equestrian use of minor highways (byways, bridleways and footpaths) is important for all who ride or drive horses off-road, helping you to be sure of your rights and responsibilities, to build your confidence.

A sequel to the Introduction course, this event covers responding to proposals that change bridleways and byways through legal orders (to divert, create or extinguish) and planning applications.

We would like to say a massive congratulations to our Access & Bridleways Officer, Sarah Bucks, on being awarded an MBE in this year’s New Years honours list. 🍾

Sarah said “I am pleased that my work over the last 30 years to improve access to the countryside for walkers, cyclists and horse riders has been recognised in this way. But the award is not just about me, it's also a tribute to the hundreds of volunteers up and down the country who are working tirelessly to preserve our historic rights of way network.” 💬

Mark Weston, Director of Access added “This is fantastic recognition for all of the volunteering that Sarah has undertaken over the years to improve the rights of way network not just in Somerset but across the whole country – very well deserved.” 👏🏻

Congratulations once again to Sarah for this fantastic achievement. 🥳

Equestrians and cyclist are both vulnerable road users so let’s work together. 🤝

Horses can move quickly and can weigh up to three-quarters of a tonne. If a horse is passed too quickly or too close, they may react and potentially cause injury to both the equestrian and cyclist. 🐎🚲

Cyclists and horse riders both have a statutory right to ride on byways, bridleways and roads. However, it is important to remember that while The Countryside Act 1968 gives cyclists the right to use bridleways, it states that cyclists must give way to horse riders and walkers. 😊

Advice for cyclists when passing equestrians
🟢Alert the horse rider you are there, by calling out in advance 'Hi, is it ok to pass?'
🟢Give the horse and rider time to react. The rider might not be able to hear you straight away so it is a good idea to wait until they have noticed you before passing.
🟢Remember to give way. You must give way to horse riders on bridleways according to The Countryside Act 1968.
🟢Look out for narrow pinch points in the track or road ahead. It may not be safe to pass each other in a narrow space and it might be safer to wait at a wider point.
🟢Slow down or stop if the horse rider asks you to. The rider may feel that the horse is about to react to something, meaning that the horse might suddenly move forwards, backwards or sideways.
🟢Pass wide and slow and never pass on the inside of a horse. If possible, pass with at least a car's width.

Advice for equestrians when passing cyclists
🟢Be aware at all times and expect the unexpected. Keep a regular lookout behind you so that a cyclist doesn’t pop up suddenly and surprise you.
🟢Remember, many people may not be familiar with horses and how to pass them safely. If a cyclist does try to pass you when it is unsafe, it is a good idea to calmly explain why it is unsafe to pass and ask them to wait for you to move to a safer place.
🟢Be considerate to other road/track users and pass them in walk.
🟢Be visible – wear hi-vis clothing to help cyclists see you from a distance

Local riders around Three Legged Cross near Wimborne Minster, Dorset, reported to Dorset Council in 2023 that the bridge on a local bridleway had been closed as it was unsafe and required replacement. 🌉

Dorset Council have a number of bridges that need either repair or replacement and have a limited budget. A quote for the replacement bridge kit, made from recycled plastic, was £18,416.74 plus installation costs. Plastic bridges are becoming increasingly used as they are environmentally friendly as they are made from recycled material, are strong and are maintenance free, giving a long life. ♻️

The BHS Dorset Committee pledged £1,000 towards the cost to ensure that the important bridleway was reopened as it is part of the strategic network of equestrian routes in the Wimborne area. 🐎

The bridge was replaced just before Christmas and the local Dorset Council Ranger has reported that there has been positive feedback from the equestrian community. 👏🏻

Thank you to Mary Court who was instrumental in getting the funding and endlessly chasing the contractors and Greenspace team to get this bridge done. 🙏🏻

📍 Barby, Northamptonshire.

No more brambles and blackthorn to battle through❗

After months of BHS Access Field Officer, persistently reporting the overgrowth obstructing the width of Byway EC23 in Barby, the path has now been cleared by the Northampton Highways Authority and drainage is to be improved. 💪🏻

Using the full width of the path now will help to keep it from becoming overgrown again. For information about how to report issues 👉🏻 https://www.bhs.org.uk/about-us/our-access-work/reporting-access-issues/

On 12 December, the Worcestershire Bridleways and Riders Association, BHS, and Worcestershire County Council Rights of Way, joined forces again for a seasonal spruce-up of Bridleway WC 576 in the Blakeshall area. A huge thank you to those who have used their time and energy to improve off-road access for many riders and other users. 🌳💚

🏇🏻 Horse riders can enjoy the Trans Pennine Trail passing through Staveley, Derbyshire thanks to the efforts of the Trans Pennine Trail team, and Chesterfield Canal and River Trust, as part of the Staveley Town Deal Restoration Work. The 38m bridge was installed in October and on 6 December 2024 an official opening ceremony was held to celebrate the achievement.

🌉 BHS Access and Bridleways Officer, Karen Haywood, who had been closely involved in ensuring the bridge would be accessible for horse riders, attended the event along with Director of Access, Mark Weston and Access Field Officer Wendy Bannerman. But the star of the show was Nikki Atkinson and her horse Whinny who marched over the bridge. Nikki commented “the bridge is enclosed so it feels safe” and was pleased to discover the horsebox parking at Poolsbrook Country Park provides a perfect base from which to explore the Transpennine Trail.
