π Barby, Northamptonshire.
No more brambles and blackthorn to battle throughβ
After months of BHS Access Field Officer, persistently reporting the overgrowth obstructing the width of Byway EC23 in Barby, the path has now been cleared by the Northampton Highways Authority and drainage is to be improved. πͺπ»
Using the full width of the path now will help to keep it from becoming overgrown again. For information about how to report issues ππ» https://www.bhs.org.uk/about-us/our-access-work/reporting-access-issues/
π¦A Christmas Clearance π¦
On Thursday 12, team members from the BHS Access and Horse Care & Welfare Teams joined Access Field Officer, Wendy Bannerman, and local volunteers to clear beautiful Bridleway W201 in Holywell, Warwickshire. π
They all had a jolly time making mincemeat of brambles, blackthorn, overhanging and a fallen tree.
Lizzie, Access Team Manager said: "The Access team spend a good portion of our working week fielding phone calls and emails, providing advice and support to members of the public and our volunteers on a variety of topics, including how to report obstructions to the Highways Authority, and how to set up your own working party to clear routes! One of our aims is to empower people with the knowledge to act themselves. So, when Wendy presented the opportunity for us to practice what we preach, there was no hesitation to step out from behind our desks and get involved. It's hard graft clearing overhead and thick foliage but seeing the difference from start to finish is so fulfilling." π¬
Thereβs still some work to do but we cleared over 300m, and we want to appeal to local riders to please ride as far as you can on the bridleway to keep the route clear. To get involved in this or other areas of the Midlands please contact [email protected] or 07783888300. π§βοΈ
On behalf of all the Access Team, we would like to take the time to thank each and every one of you for your support over this last year and to wish you a very Merry Christmas. π

πAn early Christmas gift for Merseyside π
Thanks to the hard work of local Access & Bridleways Officer, Debbie King, riders in the Whiston area have access to the lovely Whiston Woods, through the upgrade of three footpaths to bridleways. ππ»
Access to Green Spaces is incredibly important in expanding urban areas like Merseyside, and we will only continue to have equestrian access to them through early identification of routes affected by developments, engagement with developers to create equine friendly routes and submitting Definitive Map Modification Order applications based on historical documents or user evidence, along with frequent engagement with Local Access Groups, policies and plans. π΄

πBack of Ecton to Wetton Mill in the Peak District National Park
π΄BHS Access & Bridleways Officerβs Christine Harding and Viv Gray and BHS Access Field Officer, Wendy Bannerman, liaised with National Trust officer David Ward to identify the best design for a new gate to make this beautiful route more accessible for equestrians and other users.
π³On 4 November, all those involved met on site with two local riders Cris Milton, and Sarah Reeds, with their horses Millie and DD. Sarah said that it makes a βmassive difference to me and my businessβ providing horse and rider holidays.
Cris said βit was wonderful to try the new gate. After my horse was injured, I have been more cautious of gates. This is a local loop ride for me, and I will bring others to ride with me now.β
ππ»The improvements, supported by the BHS Gate Fund, have opened over 1.8km of riding from Back of Ecton to Wetton Mill in the Peak District National Park. Thanks to all those who have worked together for the success of this project.

πWest Yorkshire.
Magdalen Road bridleway (MEL/50) in the Peak District National Park, Meltham, has finally been repaired. π΄
This follows an almost a 4-year effort by Kirklees Bridleways Group, The British Horse Societyβs Yorkshire Access Field Officer and Peak and Northern Footpath Society. ππ»
This rural moorland route had suffered from erosion, water damage and poorly attempted
repairs which meant the route was not safe to use. π¦
As repeated attempts to contact the landowner failed, it was the serving of a Sec56 Notice which finally ensured that this lovely route has been repaired in character, in keeping with its beautiful surroundings. π
ππ» Today is National Get Outside day ππ»
This yearβs theme is: The Outdoors is Yours. The Outdoors is Yours means that no matter who you are, where you live, or what your level of experience is, the natural world is open and waiting for you. π²
We would like to see how you are spending your Sunday, are you joining the nation and getting out in the great outdoors β
If so, we would love to see your picture, whether you ride, carriage drive, walk or cycle, we would like to hear from you. ππΆπ»ββοΈπ΄π»ββοΈ
