Each year, we receive a large number of enquiries related to animals who have helped themselves to packages delivered through the letterbox. A major risk in such cases is the ingestion of medications and/or supplements.

A common example, especially in these winter months, is Vitamin D. These products - especially prescribed preparations - pose great risk to pets, who are very sensitive to some compounds of vitamin D. Certain varieties (found mainly in psoriasis creams) only require very small quantities to be ingested to cause significant toxicity in dogs.

If there is a dog in the house (or a very mischievous cat!), we would advise using a cage on the letterbox to prevent pets from accessing postal deliveries📮

Do you want to volunteer for the Wildcare Helpline?

The Wildcare Helpline is a telephone referral service operated by volunteers on behalf of the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions and is based at WA Wildlife in Bibra Lake.

The Wildcare Helpline provides a telephone referral service for the public who find sick or injured native wildlife and are seeking advice on where to find care for the animal.

Helpline volunteers need patience, a clear telephone voice and must enjoy talking to people from all backgrounds. Often callers may be distressed so a calm disposition is useful.

Training is provided and there is strong support from other volunteers and staff. Wildlife knowledge is not essential, but a desire to help native wildlife is.

The Wildcare Helpline is looking for volunteers on the following shifts:

7.00am-9.00am (Mon-Fri)
9.00am – 1.00pm (Mon-Fri)
1.00pm - 5.00pm (Mon-Fri)
5.00pm – 8.30pm (Mon-Fri)

Volunteers must be able to work from the Wildcare Helpline Office in Bibra Lake and be 18 years of age or older.
