If your dog is stolen:

Contact Police on 999 if theft is witnessed or 101 if suspected stolen.

Make sure you get a Crime Reference Number (CRN). The Pet Abduction Act became law on 24th August 2024.

Make sure your dog’s microchip is correctly registered on a UK database, full list on this Government list and flag as stolen: https://www.gov.uk/get-your-dog-cat-microchipped

Report to the local animal warden, veterinary clinics and rescue centres.

Register on Doglost.co.uk website, this provides backup for lost and found dogs, used by police, animal wardens and others. (Not everyone uses social media networks). Doglost also send email alerts to people in your specific area. This also assists groups helping to find missing pets across all social media platforms, they use the DogLost link to provide an instant status update, as once a dog is found, it’s easy to check.

Get on social media as this is a great way to publicise your missing dog or cat. Remember to add the date and where your pet was stolen from. Be scammer aware if you share your phone number. There are numerous Facebook groups, local to you who will help you.

Working together is key.

Poster, poster, poster and then poster again.

Be aware if anyone asks for money from you, they are probably scamming you.

If you find a lost dog, by law, you must report them to the local animal warden or you can take them to a local veterinary clinic to have a free microchip registration check.

After eight long years, a gorgeous Cocker Spaniel called Daisy, who was stolen from her home in Dorking in Mole Valley back in 2016, has now been reunited with her owners. 🐶💙

Daisy, who was one at the time, was stolen along with three other dogs in November 2016, after thieves took the working gun dogs from the garden kennels they were housed in.

Tragically one of the dogs was killed after being hit by a car as it tried to escape and the other two stolen dogs have never been located, despite best efforts from officers.

In a surreal turn of events, and nearly eight years to the day since Daisy was taken, officers were alerted on Tuesday 29 October, that someone had tried to update her microchip details. Our rural crime officer PC Laura Rowley immediately contacted the microchip company to obtain the details of the new owners.

Just two days later officers from the Mole Valley Safer Neighbourhood team completed a three hour round trip to bring Daisy back to Surrey and her owners. They said, "Daisy had been rehomed in good faith by the new owners and they were unaware of the theft of Daisy.

“We brought Daisy, who is now slightly deaf, back to the Mole Valley Safer Neighbourhood Team Office and there was not a dry eye in the house when she was reunited with her owners. She recognised them immediately and stuck to them like glue!"

Sadly, the other dogs, Tilly a black working Cocker Spaniel, and Storm a patchy white Patterdale Terrier, remain missing and are believed to be elderly or have possibly passed away due to their age at the time of the theft. The power of the microchip 🙌

One very special cat, Pepé, has been reunited with his owners, Caroline and her daughter, almost a decade after he went missing 9 years ago.

On Wednesday 28th August Pepé was found by PC Liz Harrison as she was leaving work at our Motorway Post in Samlesbury, she was in the car park when she heard a meowing sound. She looked around and found a cat with an injured paw unable to walk on it, so she put him safely into a box and took him to a local vet.

Luckily, Pepé has a microchip, so the vets contacted his owners and left a voicemail message.
