Yesterday we had the pleasure of seeing sisters Meggie and Lilli for their FREE senior cat check. These are relaxed appointments with one of our nurses and gives us the opportunity to find out more about them and discuss any changes you may have noticed. We can give advice and support to help you keep your feline family feeling their best! We also take their blood pressure and can test a urine sample that has been collected at home. Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month

A large part of Veterinary Nurses job role involves prepping patients for surgery and theatre practice.

Prepping the surgical site is an extremely important part of the whole surgical procedure. We are trained in the most efficient way of clipping the hair around the surgical site and how to clean the area to create a sterile field. Without this step being performed correctly the chances of post operative infections would be increased.

Once the patient is then prepped for surgery, Veterinary Nurses are also involved in the General Anaesthetics themselves. We are trained to monitor the patient and the anaesthetic. Working in unison with the veterinary surgeon keeping them updated throughout the procedure.

Veterinary nurses can also perform minor surgical procedures such as stitch ups or even some lumpectomys

Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month

Carrying out dental work is part of the veterinary nurses long repertoire of skills.
We routinely take dental radiographs to give us a whole picture of what is going on especially below the gum line before extracting any teeth. The veterinary nurse will then scale and polish the teeth ready for the veterinary surgeon to extract any that are required. This makes the mouth a cleaner environment for the vet to perform any dental surgery in, lowering the need for antibiotic use.
Here you can see our nurse Emily scale and polishing little Bess's teeth and her then having much needed cuddles after here procedure with our nurse Lisa.

Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month

Our role as nurses involves us regularly taking blood samples. We are fortunate that we have access to modern lab equipment in practice which our nurses are fully trained with and use on a daily basis.

Here you can see Gracie sitting beautifully for her bloods to be taken by our nurse Mel.

As well as running blood samples, our nurses perform a number of other lab tests including testing urine samples, skin scrapes and fur plucks, taking swabs and looking under the microscope to identify cells, urinary crystals or parasites.

Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month

Our Veterinary Nurses carry out a variety of different nurse clinics. Monty here has come to see our nurse Emily for his blood pressure to be checked.

Keeping our patients as calm and stress free as possible is important when reading blood pressure. Here you can see Monty is comfortable lay on one of our vet beds with a blanket wrapped around him. And good news that Monty's blood pressure is all under control.

MICROCHIPPING OFFER!!!!

Here at Vale Veterinary Group we are now offering microchipping at the discounted price of £10 which will be running until the end of June 2024.

This is in light of the new legislation which is coming into force on the 10th June 2024 where all cats will need to be microchipped by the age of 20 weeks of age. This includes adult cats over 20 weeks of age being chipped before the legislation comes into practice.

It is already legislation that all puppies must be microchipped by the breeder by the age of 8 weeks old so this offer is also valid for puppies and adults dogs.

If you want to book your cat or dog in for microchipping please call us on 01299 822052 or 01299 822423 for our Stourport Branch or 01562 822692 for our Kidderminster branch and we will get you booked in for an appointment.

If you want any further information about the legislation coming into effect follow this link to the government website where you can read more about it:

Veterinary nurses are highly qualified individuals who provide vital care to our pets and are a large support factor for the veterinary surgeons. The role requires a high level of skill and expertise. The average day for our nurses can be very varied so throughout the month of May we will be introducing you some members of our team and give you an insight into their busy working day.

It is National Pet Awareness Month and what better way to celebrate than to share some photos of our staff's lovely pets!

You may from time to time see some of our four legged friends around both our Stourport and Kidderminster practices when they come in for lots of fusses!

During Pet Awareness Month it is important not only to celebrate all of these amazing animals but also to think about the importance of providing the best possible care for them.

When taking on any new pet we need to think about how we can provide everything to support not only the species of animal but also the breed and life stage they are at. If you are thinking of getting a new pet and want any information about any of the services that we offer please don't hesitate to give us a call.

Biscuit came to see vet Will after he had suddenly stopped eating. Biscuit had a fever and was admitted for some blood tests and an abdominal ultrasound scan.
Although there were no significant findings on the tests performed, Biscuit still refused to eat anything substantial, which became a cause of real concern.
Vet Nick anaesthetised Biscuit and placed an Oesophagostomy Feeding Tube (O tube). This is a tube that enters from the side of the neck and allows us to feed cats manually while they are not feeling well enough to eat by themselves.
This provides cats with an optimal food supply which supports their nutritional needs and also makes them feel better so much faster.
With some time and medication Biscuit started eating on his own and made a full recovery!
You may be able to spot the tube on the x-ray that was taken when the tube was placed to make sure it was in the right position, and also here are some lovely pictures taken when Biscuit was signed off by vet Nick and another taken by his owner when he was enjoying a cuddle at home!
Well done Biscuit you were a delightful patient and a firm favourite at the practice.

Last week we had the pleasure of seeing these 3 gorgeous cats for their free senior cat check up with one of our nurses. Poppy is a regular visitor as she receives monthly pain relief injections, we know she is happiest when she can stay in her carrier. Tilly is a very worried lady but fortunately we could unclip the top of her basket and then use blankets to allow her to hide; she was so brave for her blood pressure measurements on her tail. Bambam is a pretty chilled chap and was perfectly happy sitting on the scales and he was more than happy to have the blood pressure cuff on his front leg. Bambam has since been diagnosed with diabetes he has begun insulin therapy and is doing well 😻

Daphne the Dachshund presented to us this week having been repeatedly sick. Her worried Mum rushed her into our Kidderminster practice to see vet Will.
Despite Daphne having a loud opinion on much of the situation, we could tell that all wasn’t well , as she had quickly become dehydrated and Will could feel something suspicious in her abdomen .
We immediately admitted Daphne for an X-Ray and found Daphne had a serious bowel obstruction.
After a night on fluids, Daphne was safe to go under anaesthetic and bowel surgery. Will found a large piece of fabric stuck fast in her duodenum - just below her stomach . Once the offending article was removed, things quickly started to get back to normal and Daphne returned home the same evening.
A couple of days later, Daphne was back on song and seems well on her way to a full recovery!
Well done Daphne you were very brave and a delightful patient.

Earlier in the week we saw these two lovely ladies for their senior cat check ups. As you can see Connie was a fan of the sink but Daisy was happy staying on her blanket in the bottom half of her cat carrier. We're happy to allow them to explore and choose where they are happiest ☺️ recent studies have estimated a staggering 90% of cats aged 12 years and older have arthritis; this is just one of the things we help look for during these consultations. If you have a cat aged 7 years and older call the Kidderminster practice on 01562 822692 to book your free appointment 😻🐾
