I’m working with a 13 months/adolescent ridgeback (initially bred to hunt lions) this gorgeous gal is working on reactivity, impulse and lead work. Understanding her natural drives is key!.
Top tip; understand your dogs history, innate traits and drives is fundamental when working with dogs - your dog wants to work with you, so work with them in a way they know how!
let’s work with and NOT against behaviour !
We have had complete success on the human side too - I educate humans on their dogs which is vital to dog training - I’d like to congratulate Giovanni for his patience and willing to learn and listen and together they are doing so amazing. makes my hart proud to be a party of their journey x

With Bonfite night approaching, Diwali and New years eve after that it can be a very stressful time for some of our fur babies.

There are some things you can do to help your dog cope and help elevate the stress for them.

* Play one of the many YouTube videos that simulate the sounds of fireworks. Armed with your dogs favourite toy or treat start playing the sounds at a very low level and when your dog is relaxed and confident, slowly increase the volume, pairing this with things your dog enjoys - such as play, feeding or affection. If your dog appears uncomfortable at any point, stop increasing the volume. To get started with desensitising your dog see link;

* You can buy plug in adaptors or purchase various calming remedies that can help relax your dog. Plug the adaptor in a few days before the start of firework season to allow the pheromones to spread around the house or use calming remedies a couple of hours before you anticipate any stressful situation.

* Get your dog used to the TV or radio being louder than usual by gradually increasing the sounds levels in the lead up to the night - this can help mask the sound of fireworks.
* Check with your neighbours to see if they are planning a fireworks party. If lots of fireworks are expected nearby you may want to see if a friend or relative would like a four-legged visitor for the night.

* Close all windows and curtains or blinds. Arm yourself with your dogs favourite treats and play snuffle games in the home. You can hide treats in blankets, under furniture or play games with the various puzzle games and snuffle mats you can purchase from pet stores and online.

Before I look at my clients dogs I ask; are they meeting their dogs basic needs.
We all know how to love our dogs but often the simplest of things are overlooked. Before embarking on a training journey it is important to cover these bases. One of those bases is often misunderstood or completely overlooked, Enrichment!!

Enrichment doesn't just cover a daily walk or 2, and isn't just a ball to play fetch with. Suitable enrichment should be affording your dog with the opportunity to practice their genetic hardwired, innate behaviours and this is where I see most problem behaviours creeping into our canine homes.

If you have a dog that is offering you 'unwanted behaviours' it's worth doing some research to look at the breed history and genetic traits that lies deep within your fury friend.

Once we are meeting our dogs needs tackling pesky behaviour happens quickly.
