Keep your furry friends safe over the festive season with these tips from our vets 🎄

Find the full Christmas Survival Guide here: http://pdsa.me/DlXc

[Visual description: Infographic titled 'Christmas pet hazards'. Advice includes: Don't dress pets up for Christmas. This can cause your pets unnecessary stress and them to act differently. Be aware of popular festive plants that can be poisonous to pets if consumed (see guide for full list). Keep small and edible decorations well out of reach of prying paws to avoid any festive frights. Not all parts of a Christmas dinner are safe for pets and some can even be toxic. Check our guide for the do's and don'ts. Create a safe place. If you're having guests round, create a safe place for your pet to retreat to if it all gets a bit much. Have you got a new puppy in need of training or perhaps you have an adult dog with a patchy recall or one which pulls on lead?
Or maybe a new rescue dog and want to bond with it and discover its potential? No matter of your dog's age, ability and level of training, join one of our classes to spend fun time with your dog learning new things.
We have now opened bookings for January 2025.
Classes are held at Enslow Farm, Kidlington.

No matter how old is your dog or at what level of training, we’ve got a class just for you! From puppy socialisation to advanced obedience, we make sure that your dog becomes confident, happy and well behaved.
Using only positive reward based methods we help you build a long-lasting bond between you and your dog underpinned by mutual understanding.
Handouts will be sent to you after every lesson so you can always refer to them in the future. Ongoing telephone and video call support throughout the course.
After completion of the basic obedience course we also offer intermediate and advanced classes.

PUPPY CLASSES:

Wednesday 6.00pm group starts 8th of January 2025

Saturday 10.00am group starts 11th of January at 10.00 am

The six-week long course led by experienced trainers will cover all basic commands and provide advice on anything puppy-related, including relationship building, socialisation, desensitisation, toilet and crate training, and much more, to ensure you and your puppy have the best start to a happy life together. When weather permits, we offer both indoor and outdoor training environments so your dog learns to listen to you when there are distractions around. We use only kind, reward-based methods.
Every puppy session starts with a short puppy play to allow the little ones to socialise in a safe environment (no slippery hall floors!). To enrol your dog and for further details and to enrol, please visit https://forms.gle/dmsBCrSXoF6pF4tCA

ADOLESCENT AND ADULT DOG:

Wednesday 7.00pm group starts 8th of January 2025

Saturday 2.00pm group starts 11th of January 2025

Do you have an adolescent or adult dog in need of training to be a well-behaved pooch? Maybe walking on a loose lead is a challenge or recall is a bit patchy, or maybe you just want to spend fun time with your dog teaching him/her new skills?
If yes, our Adolescent/Adult Dog Obedience course is just for you!

These classes are for dogs over 6 months old who have not attended a structured puppy course with us or another provider, or need to refresh their basic training and gain some new skills. Using only reward-based methods, we will learn walking nicely to heel, not pulling on lead, recall, stay, emergency stop, and much more. We train in both indoor and outdoor environments (weather permitting).

The 6-week course costs £90 and is bookable via this form: https://forms.gle/dmsBCrSXoF6pF4tCA

When the weather outside is frightful and the prospect of going out with the dog not so delightful…. You can still engage with some fun at home. There are of course licky mats and stuffed kongs, boxes with treats hidden between scraps of paper, hiding something tasty in empty egg boxes or in a muffin tray under the tennis balls and so on, but for me engaging our dog in some scent work is by far the most fun activity that we can do together at home. It’s so easy to set up and you can get everything you need for well under a tenner. The scent work appeals to their strongest sense, the smell and their genetic predispositions to sniff. It tires your dog out and you both can have a lot of fun with it.
If you wish to learn about the odour recognition, indication and nose games, sign up to our new scent work course which starts in January. The course is led by one of the country’s best scent work trainers Heather Donnelly. For more information and to enrol, head to https://forms.gle/E7M4w3dXikLepjAz7

Highlight of my day today was spending time with this sweet soul and her humans. During the puppy consultation you get advice on all puppy-related issues from toilet training to how to settle the new arrival into a multi-dog household, and everything in between. I also give you tips on how to raise a confident, happy and well behaved balanced dog. The session includes training of basic cues to ensure that you will not struggle with recall or pulling on the lead in the future. This little one is set to get the best start. So if you have a new puppy or are planning to get one, get in touch.

Another great training session with this amazing group of my students . Note that the three dogs are in “stay” with owners away from them, while the fourth dog is doing recall past the dogs. I think it’s fair to say that the impulse control is coming along nicely 🐾👍😍 Thank you to all the pooches and their humans for continuing training with us! Did you know that the school also provides agility lessons, ring craft and RallyO as well as have an in-house brilliant veterinary physio- and hydro-therapy clinic?

Antifreeze spills and leaky engines are a lethal threat to our pets. Ethylene glycol, the main ingredient in antifreeze, is extremely toxic. Unfortunately, it is naturally sweet, which is why pets are tempted to drink it. As the weather continues to drop colder, please be extremely cautious of spills and leaks ❄️

Ethylene glycol is also found in car screen wash, brake fluid, radiator fluid and some garden water features. Even small amounts, if swallowed, is deadly as it causes permanent damage to the kidneys.

Symptoms of antifreeze poisoning in dogs and cats:
- Wobbliness and weakness
- Vomiting
- Low energy (lethargy)
- Drinking and weeing more to begin, and then less than normal
- Difficulty breathing or fast breathing
- Seizures (fits)
- Collapse

Sadly, antifreeze poisoning is usually fatal unless it’s treated extremely quickly. Call your vet immediately if you think your pet has come into contact with antifreeze - don't wait for symptoms to appear!⚠️

Does your pet’s fur protect them from the cold? ❄️

In most cases, yes! But in really wet and cold weather, if your pet isn't able to keep active or get themselves somewhere warm, their fur coat may not be enough. Like us humans, our pets, though thankfully rarely, can develop a dangerous and potentially deadly condition called hypothermia.

Any pet can become seriously ill if the temperature of their body drops too low, and acting quickly and doing the right thing could save your pet’s life.

Here are some key symptoms to look out for during the winter months! And if you suspect your pet may have hypothermia, it’s important to call your vet straight away and follow their advice ⚠️

[Visual description: Infographic about hypothermia in pets. Signs and symptoms include; shivering, drowsiness, confusion, clumsiness, pale gums and loss of consciousness/collapse. What you should do; 1. Call your vet straight away and follow their advice. 2. Get your pet out of the cold. Take them somewhere warm (not hot) and sheltered. 3. If your pet is awake, try to get them to drink some lukewarm (not hot) water. 4. If your pet is wet, use towels to dry them by rubbing them over. Change the towels when they become damp. 5. Be careful not to heat your pet up too quickly, this can be dangerous. Use blankets and towels under and over them to keep them warm. Using hot water bottles and heat pads will heat them too quickly and may cause burns.]

Another great training session this morning with these two lovely girls. They did everything I asked of them perfectly so we finished the session with a good play and frolicking in the snow. After coming home Semla fell asleep on her favourite toy 🥰❄️🐾
