‼️ WEATHER WARNING‼️

I’m sure you’ve seen we are due high winds from 3am . If you can bring your small animals in please do (in an unheated room with window open) especially if they are in a hutch.

Hutches are flimsy and easily blown over causing fatal injuries to rabbits and guinea pigs. It’s not worth the risk.

Photo of hutch - that isn’t in use for animals - during yellow weather warnings. We are expected to have red.

Stay safe everyone xx

The National Rabbit Festival is a completely ethical, vegan event.

Why?
Because we believe that in advocating for rabbits is part of a much bigger picture: we should be advocating for preventing the exploitation and harming of all animals, not just lagomorphs.

You do not have to be vegan to attend The National Rabbit Festival, and we are so lucky that there are so many amazing food vendors out there to show that you won't miss out on a thing - instead, you'll be eating amazing food and you won't have to worry about any animals being harmed in the process.

It is at the heart of our ethics to be kind to all animals.

🐰GIVING YOUR RABBIT ORAL MEDICATION🐰

At some point, your rabbit may need to have medication and it’s vital that your vet / nurse / tech discuss this fully with you and teach you how to give it.

❤️‍🩹 Doses can change depending on the type & strength of medication, the weight of the rabbit and the condition it’s being described for. The dose can also change depending on how long the medication needs to be given. Please never alter the dose without speaking to your vet team first. Always double check the dose on the box label and double check your syringe every time you give any medication, regardless of how familiar you are with it.

❤️‍🩹 Not all syringes are equal! Typically your rabbit may be prescribed metacam as a pain relief. This is usually the dog version and comes with a syringe that measures in kg of dog weight. This is VERY different to a ‘normal’ syringe that measures in ml. It is vital to double check the dose and syringe to be used with your vet / nurse / tech - as well as having them teach you the best way to draw up and give the medication too.

❤️‍🩹Tablets. Sometimes the medication is not available in a liquid form so tablets may be given. These are almost impossible to give direct to the rabbits mouth so usually need to be crushed and mixed with a little warm water and syringed directly into the mouth. HOWEVER, not all tablets are suitable for crushing as this can affect how they work. So always double check with the team before doing this.

❤️‍🩹 Syringing into mouth. Some medications taste sweet and the rabbit will learn to happily take them from the syringe. However this takes training to achieve. Until this point is reached, you will need to restrain the rabbit - usually by gently wrapping them in a towel (bunny burrito). Never tip a rabbit on its back as this is stressful. Ideally have someone help hold the rabbit so you can gently and slowly syringe the meds into the mouth as you have been taught to do.

🚨If you accidentally give the wrong medicine / wrong dose or think the rabbit may have inhaled any of it, please call your vet ASAP for emergency advice.

⛔️Finally, NEVER give any medication that has not been prescribed for your particular rabbit and specifically for the current issue. Remember that medications have expiry dates that can change once the packet / bottle has been opened plus they need to be stored as per the box instructions.

When thinking about what carriers to transport your small animals in, always think ‘what is safest’ and ‘what is least stressful’.

Standard cat-carrier type carriers are the best route to go down as they’re sturdy, more likely to protect your animals in the event of a vehicle accident and are much more chew proof!

Hard carriers also provide your animals with a lot more comfort - rather than the flexible mesh (which is more open and changes shape as they move) of soft carriers, having four sides that don’t move that are typically more closed in will enable them to feel less exposed to the elements.

The size of your carrier is important - it must comfortably fit your animals, but not have too much movement for slipping and sliding; remember that bonded groups and pairs will naturally cuddle together. A bit of tesselating is okay!

Please note that backpack type carriers are unethical - they’re exposed, have little airflow and aren’t beneficial for your fluffy friends.

It’s also important to note that carriers should only be used when transporting animals to the vet, boarding facilities or from one space to another. We do not condone carrier-bonding - this is a stress method - and taking your rabbits for walks is also deeply unethical.
