With the weather warming Iā€™m not going to say donā€™t exercise your dog because some dogs cope with heat better than others but as owners we need to be sensible and watch for early signs of over heating.

Also please donā€™t just believe what you see or read on Facebook, research this information for yourself with creditable authorities like https://www.rvc.ac.uk/vetcompass/news/the-rvc-urges-owners-of-hot-dogs-to-cool-first-transport-second #:~:text=Recommended%20cooling%20methods%20include%20cold,dogs%20with%20underlying%20health%20problems.

I always try to teach this. So often we think the dogs like how we pet them but putting up with is different to enjoying.

24/05/2024

I so often hear myself advising clients and how I must sound like a real miserable cow.

If you want a dog who is calm and relaxed in the pub donā€™t let everyone fuss or treat them.

If you want your dog to recall from distractions, donā€™t let them learn that a fleeting stranger is more fun than you.

Be the best thing in your dogs world ā¤ļø

Have you filled in the national dog survey yet?

We expect dogs to learn our language and so many ignorant people donā€™t bother to reciprocate the gesture.

In Britain a side to side shake of the head means no, in Bulgaria it means yes. In dog language a ā€˜smileā€™ like in the videoā€™ is called a fear grimace and shows the dog is in discomfort. People might expect the dog to attempt to escape if it was unhappy, but very likely the girl would have just returned it to the bucket. Not all dogs bite when unhappy. Maybe it did in the passed and it was smacked on the nose so now it just freezes and waits for the distress to eventually go away.

Please give dogs the same respect we expect in return and teach your children.

Spaniels are high on my bite risk list for guarding behaviours simply because owners donā€™t understand how highly they value carrying objects.

Start finding out what your dog enjoys doing and use it to your advantage. You canā€™t make a dog something itā€™s not, but with the supposedly higher intelligence level maybe owners can adjust and adapt to the dogs needs.

I will never not share a good post about the importance of recognising pain in our dogs. I also have many personal experiences of dogs behaviour improving once pain is identified. Your dog has very limited ways to tell you things please listen to them

ā€˜My dog is naughty/bad/untrainable/dominant/stupidā€™

I hear this most weeks on intake forms. Usually I get pretty excited to see these cos I know Iā€™m gonna get to change a dog and owners life!

So often we write our dogs off as any adjective that fits the above and honestly, Iā€™m yet to meet a dog who fits any of those adjectives (and I have worked with 10k plus dogs over the ten years Iā€™ve been doing this!). I do however week in week out meet dogs with health issues that contribute to their slow progress in terms of training. Did you know dogs donā€™t show pain or discomfort how we do? We often think ā€˜oh he isnā€™t limping or yelping so he is fineā€™.

Please read the examples below ā¬‡ļø

šŸ¾ A huntaway cross who I work with who bit his owner. Reluctant to have his feet cleaned, got spicy over any intense handling, had periods of seeming insanity and relentless barking and being unable to calm down. Huntaways are vocal dogsā€¦ butā€¦

Turns out he had hip dysplasia. This dog didnā€™t limp. He wasnā€™t lame in any way. He chased his ball and sprinted and jumped and had no issues physically on the surface however under that behaviour was pain.

šŸ¾ A French bulldog. Resource guarding to the extreme. Bit his owners while resource guarding the knot pattern in their wooden floor. Also bombed around without a worry in the world and had no outward signs of pain.

Turns out he had a severe spinal condition causing intermittent excruciating pain.

šŸ¾ A young spaniel owned by a very good friend who was having confidence issues. She would ā€˜tap outā€™ of training on the regular and my friend went from ā€˜this is my ticket dog who will represent my countryā€™ to ā€˜is this even possible?ā€™

Dog had hormonal issues and likely spikes of hormones left right and centre. A carefully timed spay and she is now grade 6 in agility.

šŸ¾ A friends Border Collie. Owned by a very experienced and talented agility handler and trainer. Regularly ā€˜checked outā€™ of training sessions, seemed to not be able to learn things that were moderately straightforward. Described by other trainers as ā€˜oh she is just a border collie itā€™s what they are likeā€™.

Turns out she is mostly deaf.

šŸ¾ A black Labrador. Always social and friendly and attended brilliant puppy classes and adolescent classes. Had the best start training wise you can imagine. He started showing some intermittent aggression to his owners in the home and aggression to other dogs out and about.

Turns out he had bilateral elbow dysplasia.

šŸ¾ Young German Shepherd. Always energetic and silly in her behaviour but suddenly got worse. Excessive zoomies, inability to settle, increased reactivity to other dogs, reluctant to get in the car, obsessive destruction at home.

Turns out she had an infection in her va**na that was causing discomfort and exacerbating all those teenage behaviours to the point of being unmanageable.

šŸ¾ My own dog! My NSDTR started missing his dog walk contact early last year. I was tearing my hair out trying to fix it.

Turns out he had a minor iliopsoas strain and some physio fixed the issue for us.

ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”

All these dogs have one thing in common. They are not stupid or untrainable or naughty or dominant. They are uncomfortable and that is triggering extreme behaviour fallout.

None of the above issues would be resolveable with training. All of the issues will be resolveable with training ONLY when the pain is resolved. Some of them will have drastic improvement from the moment the pain or discomfort is managed!

If your behaviourist or trainer doesnā€™t immediately advise a veterinary visit if any aggression, excessive ā€˜naughtinessā€™ or strange behaviour is present, walk away immediately. Even if you think your dog is fine, visit the vets. Ask for a thorough examination and push for a proper evaluation of your dog from nose to tail and potentially blood tests too. If youā€™re still not sure, get a second opinion.

You cannot train the pain or discomfort out of your dog. Address THIS first and foremost.

Reasons I gave my dogs a treat on this mornings walk
* having a wee
* recall after saying hello to a dog
* moving over to the side on 8 occasions for joggers & cyclists
* after walking passed a dog who was barking at them
* recalling from a dead deer
* recalling from a live deer
* recalling from a crisp packet
* because they came back for no reason and wanted one.

I am present with them, we watch, run, play and smile. No podcast, text messages or doom scrolling. If walking your dog is stressful try changing your perspective and find the little wins.

1-2-1 training is far more beneficial than group

So many people contact me wanting to join my group training classes. Unfortunately for them all of my classes have a very long waiting list because my regular clients keep coming back.

However good my group classes might be each person has to share that hour time slot and what is taught is often fairly general and as described below in the ā€˜trainingā€™ category. 1-2-1 help can be more targeted to specific issues and guidance can be more easily provided on the ā€˜wholeā€™ of YOUR dog.

I promise you will get a happier, easier relationship with your dog with a single 1-2-1 lesson each month than four group classes each month.

Getting a puppy and thinking everything will be easy because ā€˜Iā€™m going to train it from day one and those that struggle with their dog were just lazyā€™ is not true.

No matter how well trained your young dog is they are going to to go through brain growth stages where extra support and management will be needed. You are not a bad owner if your dog goes off the rails slightly or needs to go back to basics at this age it is normal. Getting help with your dog at this stage can be the difference between a bump in the road or the onset of life long difficulties.
