Hamster needs a trip to the vet?

It looks like we could be set for a spell of lovely weather, so here are our top tips for keeping your dog safe and happy ☀️🐶

1. Walk at cooler times

Avoid the hottest part of the day and minimise how much time your dog spends in the sun by taking them for walks early in the morning and later in the evening.

2. Beware of hot surfaces

Remember that pavements on hot days can burn dog’s pads. If you are unable to place the back of your hand on a pavement for five seconds, then it is too hot for the dog to walk on.

3. Always remember water

Always carry water and something for the dog to drink from. Some dogs prefer to drink from their own bowl, so consider taking this with you.

4. Cool your dog down

To cool a dog down, move them to a shaded area, provide a cool damp towel for them to lay on if they choose. Offer them cool (not cold) water and you can also give them access to a shallow paddling pool.

5. Spot the signs of heatstroke

Signs of overheating or heatstroke include heavy panting, excessive drooling, red eyes, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhoea, tremors, and staggering. Call the vet as soon as possible, but prioritise immediate first aid in cooling the dog down.

6. If your dog is showing signs of heatstroke

• Move the dog to a shaded, cool area.
• Provide a cool damp towel for your dog to lay on if it chooses. Ensure a continuous flow of air across the dog to help increase evaporative heat loss.
• Gently pour small amounts of room temperature water onto the dog’s body (not cold water as this may cause shock) until breathing starts to settle. The aim is for the dog to gradually cool down, not begin to shiver.
• Offer the dog small amounts of room temperature water.
• Call the vet as soon as possible, but prioritise immediate first aid in cooling the dog down.

7. Find cool places

Wherever your dog is it should have access to shade, cool and clean water, and ideally a cool breeze. Areas of the house that can get particularly hot, such as conservatories, should be off limits.

8. Never leave a dog in a car

Even with the windows open and in the shade, a car can heat up quickly and become a death trap – even on a mildly warm/sunny day.

IF YOU STUMBLE ACROSS A HEDGEHOG NEST ………. 🦔🦔🦔

Hedgehog nests are generally well hidden but not very sturdy, they can be just a pile of leaves so please be vigilant if you are raking, trimming or cutting long grass. Sometimes nests can be as simple as a carrier bag in your garage if they can gain access! Underneath sheds and decking are also favourite places so please bear in mind if you are thinking of demolishing or building….

If a nest is disturbed, mum may kill or abandon the hoglets so the best way to prevent this happening is to avoid disturbing a nest in the first place.

Having a natural area in your garden this time of year will help them so much. Leave your grass long where you can and be wary if you really need to rake that pile of leaves. A natural area within your garden can look beautiful and encourage lots of different wildlife to visit. Put off dismantling that shed...

If you do accidentally disturb a nest, cover it back up straight away . DO NOT touch the hoglets with your bare hands. Wait and see if mum returns. She may return to the nest or may return and move the nest and babies to another site.

If she does NOT return and the hoglets are squeaking or leaving the nest then you will need to call your local rescue for advice and to assist.

Please note that baby hedgehogs can sometimes venture out looking for mum when she can simply be out foraging for food. This make the situation this time of year very difficult to judge from all sides! Our experience has shown us that generally she will be away for up to a couple of hours but we strongly advise that any babies, any length of time outside of the nest or left alone in the nest, please call your local rescue with any details you have. All situations are different and we do not want to offer advice that generalises the situation leaving any danger to the little ones and/or taking them from their mother.

If you find a lone baby hedgehog and have not come across a nest the chances are that there is a nest nearby. Mum could have been disturbed and not returned and the babies may be leaving of their own accord. Call your local rescue for the little one and advice and be aware that you may hear squeaking or come across more lone babies. More often than not when we are called regarding one baby out alone we receive more calls with the remaining letter close by.

Hand rearing baby hedgehogs is should ALWAYS be undertaken by a trained rescue, please do not attempt to do so yourself. They look very cute but they require expert help.

Babies will stay with their mum for up to 8 weeks so this gives you a guide if you have a nest in your garden.

A cat who went missing from her Bishopton home in August 2023 was found near Manchester nine months later after a resident discovered her sleeping in an old pram in her shed.

Blue-green algae are most commonly found in non-flowing fresh water such as lakes or ponds during the warm weather but can also occur at other times of the year. They can float on the surface of the water or be bottom dwelling.

Exposures in animals usually occur when they drink from water bodies where the algae have bloomed. Dogs are often affected when they swim in infested water bodies or groom themselves afterwards.

Although not all species are toxic, many blue-green algae produce toxins that can have effects on different body systems. Clinical signs therefore vary depending on the toxin(s) involved, but can include gastrointestinal signs, liver failure and neurological signs.

If you know or suspect that your pet has come into contact with blue-green algae, we recommend that you seek veterinary treatment as soon as possible. Veterinary professionals can call VPIS on 0207 3055 055.

Plea for fosterers!

If any of you would like the joy of sharing your life with a hound but who may not be in a position to offer one a permanent home at the moment, do consider fostering for Lurcher SOS. We are always in need of new foster carers for our dogs. But even more so at present. Whilst we were in a lockdown situation there were many people who purchersed or adopted dogs. There were few dogs in the pounds we work closely with which was great! But now we are seeing dogs come flooding into pounds again. Which is so sad. As we have no kennels we rely on our foster homes. Once these foster homes are full, we can't help any more dogs. We are now turning dogs away.

More info on what being a foster parent for these wonderful dogs may be found on our website www.lurchersos.org.uk/foster.

Please consider this especially if you cannot at present open you house to a permanent dog- maybe you can open your heart to foster!

During their time in foster care all dogs, if not previously done, will be wormed, microchipped, neutered (if old enough) and vaccinated. We will cover the cost of all of this and any vet bills incurred whilst in your care. although if you can cover some of the food costs, that would be a great help to us.

This is going to happen one day soon, I'm sure.
