Fireworks season is fast approaching. If you have a dog or cat that is scared of fireworks, here’s a few tips that may help to keep them calmer:

- closing all windows and curtains
- making a safe space for them to hide in
- using calming supplements on the run up to
the event
- tuning in to Classic FM on Guy Fawkes night-
classical music has been proven to help
keep our pets calm in stressful situations

When Marley's owners saw that he wouldn't eat his tea, they knew something was seriously wrong. Unheard of for this lovely young labrador!

And when he became dull, bloated up and started trying to retch without bringing anything up, his owners recognised that these are the classic signs of GDV. That stands for Gastric Dilation Volvulus -a condition where the stomach twists around on itself, which can be rapidly fatal.

Fortunately, his owners were really on the ball and raced him down to us, where we began preparing for life-saving surgery.

And even more fortunately, we were able to take xrays quickly which showed that Marley didn't actually have a GDV. His stomach was just reeeeally full of food! A bit more investigation and it turned out that he'd got into a bag of food left on the doorstep by a delivery driver, and scoffed 1kg of dog biscuits!!
24 hours later and he's completely back to normal -bright and happy (and probably up for doing it again if he gets a chance!)

Halloween costumes can be really scary for our pets, so it’s a great idea to create a safe space for them to go and hide if you have trick or treaters πŸ¦‡πŸŽƒ

β˜„οΈπŸͺ¨ The dog that ate a meteorite! πŸͺ¨β˜„️

Yes, you read that correctly! This rock is a meteorite which started its journey somewhere in the depths of space! 🌠 It fell to Earth in Egypt and became a prized possession of the Davis family. Unfortunately the last stage of its journey was through the intestines of Arnie, the family's lovely pet dog! 🐢

We helped remove the space rock this week (along with another garden stone Arnie had eaten!) and were very happy to see Arnie back to full health and reunited with Verity, Will and the rest of the family!

Part-time Receptionist – Ivybridge

We have an exciting opportunity for a part-time receptionist to join our friendly and enthusiastic team at South Moor Vets. We are a privately owned practice that has been established for over 50 years. We like to pride ourselves on our patient and client care, and continue to strive to improve all the time.

This is a permanent position for 3 days per week; Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
The hours are 9am to 6pm, with an hour unpaid break for lunch. You would also need to work a Saturday morning 1:4.

This role is varied, and will include (but is not limited to) greeting clients and their pets, answering telephone calls, booking appointments, replying to emails, taking payments, and keeping the reception area clean and tidy. Applicants should be understanding and compassionate, work well in a busy environment, and be able to maintain our high standards of customer care.

This position is based at our Ivybridge surgery, but you may be required to work in one of our other branches in Modbury, Kingsbridge or Dartington from time to time.

If you think you would like to join the team, please contact Caroline Newman at [email protected] for an application form.

⚠️WARNING - GRAPHIC IMAGES ⚠️

This is the delightful Bluebell πŸͺ»

She came to see our surgeon Will with a soft tissue tumour on her flank. It had been removed at another practice but unfortunately grew back shortly after the initial surgery. Will performed a CT scan and injected contrast fluid into the mass so that he could assess the extent of its growth and plan a complete surgical removal. Thankfully the mass did not appear to have invaded Bluebell's ribs or have spread elsewhere in her body.

As you can see from the rather dramatic surgical pictures, (skip these if you don't like gore) Will had to remove quite a lot of skin and muscle to ensure he didn't leave any of the tumour behind, but despite being faced with an intimidating wound to close he was able to use some reconstruction techniques to close the wound without any tension.

Bluebell was a fantastic patient and her owners (who are farm and equine vets themselves) followed our post-op instructions brilliantly, so the wound healed without any complications and two weeks after surgery Bluebell was back to running around at top speed! πŸ’™

Did you know that August is ?

If your pet is showing any signs of scratching, excessive rolling, ear problems, hair loss, body odour and skin changes it might be time to schedule an exam with your veterinarian for a skin health check!

At South Moor Vets we have our very own Advanced Practitioner in Veterinary Dermatology based at our Dartington branch. You can book to see her for skin consultations if you have a case that you feel would benefit with a longer consult time.

Contact us today for more information.

08/08/2024

8 weeks ago Rumba presented with a urine infection that wasn't clearing up with antibiotics. She had a history of bladder stones at a previous vets, and had to undergo an emergency operation to surgically remove the stones, as they were causing a blockage meaning she couldn't urinate.

Because of her previous history, we performed an x-ray of her bladder when the infection wasn't improving. This x-ray confirmed that unfortunately the bladder stones had returned.

The decision was made to manage these stones with a strict diet change, onto a prescription food designed to acidify the urine and dissolve the stones.

8 weeks later we took a follow up x-ray, and as you can see all of the stones have completely dissolved!!

This really is a case that highlights how useful diet control can be in certain medical cases. In this instance, Rumba’s owner being super strict with her diet has saved her the need for major abdominal surgery, and Rumba should continue to live a normal happy life.

She will need to continue on this strict diet for the rest of her life, as adding any treats or snacks will alter the urine pH allowing the stones to form again. Luckily Rumba is enjoying the taste of the prescription food!

Can you help us find Scramble?

β€˜Scramble has been on holiday with us for 4 weeks at Mead Drive, Thurlestone, she has barely been outside but disappeared, through an ajar bedroom window, and must have jumped down from the balcony during the night 29 July.
Scramble is a tortoise shell brown female tabby, she is 16 years old (17 on 18/08/24), she is microchipped and has arthritic back legs, she is also deaf.’

Please call Paul or Julie on 07860 334871 or 07778 749423 if you have any information.
