Today’s festive hazard is… chocolate! 🍫

We all love a bit of chocolate, especially at Christmas time, but unfortunately this sweet treat is also very appealing to our pets.

As a general rule of thumb, the darker the chocolate, the more toxic it is. However, we work out the toxicity dose by the weight of your pet, how many grams they’ve eaten, and how strong the cocoa percentage is.

With most cases we administer an injection to induce vomiting in dogs. For cats however, we aren’t able to give them the injection, so we may have to sedate them to induce vomiting a different way. But luckily we rarely see cats that have eaten chocolate, it’s the dogs we have to watch out for!

If you think your dog or cat have eaten chocolate of any kind, contact your vet immediately for advice.

Chocolate toxicity symptoms:

🍫 Diarrhoea
🍫 Vomiting
🍫 Increased thirst
🍫 Seizures
🍫 Restlessness
🍫 Rapid breathing
🍫 Tremors

Todays Christmas hazards to look out for are…

Christmas decorations, lights, and tinsel! 🎄

Christmas tree baubles, as well as other small tree ornaments, can be really tempting to play with to our cats and dogs, but could pose a risk of being ingested and possibly causing a blockage.

As many of you have probably experienced first hand, our cats absolutely LOVE, and go mad for climbing the Christmas tree and getting all wrapped up in the lights and tinsel! While this is fairly uncommon, strangulation can still occur, as well as chewing on the Christmas tree lights!

The count down to Christmas is on! Today’s hazard to look out for over the festive period is…

Christmas cake and Christmas pudding 🎂 ⚠️

Raisins, currents and sultanas are extremely toxic to dogs, so please take care to keep cakes and snacks away from them.

If you think your dog may have ingested them, please call your vet for advice immediately - most cases involve the vet administering an injection to make them vomit, which will hopefully bring all the toxins up and out of their system.

Signs to look out for:

- Diarrhoea
- Reduced appetite
- Stomach pain
- Lethargic/low energy
- Vomiting
- Blood in poo

Not microchipped, young female, found near traffic lights on Western Road, Ivybridge. We suspect she was involved in an RTA.
