🐾 Have You Tried a Sniffy Walk? 🐾
Sniffy walks or 'sniffaris' are a fantastic way to help our dogs AND us humans decompress. This is something I have really needed recently so I've been doing more of them with my own dog and its been a wonderful reminder of just how beneficial they can be!
It doesn't have to involve any extra work or extra time on our part, you don't need to invest in licki mats or snuffle mats etc... if you don't want to. If its extra stress for you, you can pass this onto your dog so the simpler the better.
I've been finding quiet spots to sit and watch the world go by, letting my dog just be a dog - sniffing, processing her surroundings at her own pace and moving onto the next spot when she decides its time. This has replaced her normal evening walk so in fact, it has been less effort on my part and contrary to what you might expect, it has still given her more than enough physical and mental stimulation to be calm all evening.
It is important to choose somewhere your dog feels relaxed and safe. For some, this might need to be the garden, or a quiet, empty car park after hours with a longer lead. The key is to find what works best for your dog - and the beauty of a sniffy walk is that, that quickly becomes clear while you are watching them.
