Well our morning has had an interesting start! Penny and Revie where attacked on their morning walk by a passing dog who managed to pull her owner over onto the floor to run towards my dogs with the intention of biting them. Revie took the first hit when the dog tried latching on to his back leg, Penny then reacted to this and we suddenly have two bully dogs in fight mode!! Luckily for me, Penny proved that she really trusts me to make decisions for her and keep her safe. Everytime (and I say everytime because this went on for a while) I told Penny to back off she did, giving me time to attempt to get hold of the other dog who was still insistent on trying to bite Revie. Penny only involved herself when her brother was being attacked which for a reactive dog like her shows great progress and I'm so proud of her as things could have been much, much worse.
I managed to get my two into a nearby garden so that I could get control of the dog who was now running around, potentially going to cross the road to get at a puppy who was walking by. I tried to help her owner up to her feet, with the help of neighbours who had come out of their houses after she had hit the floor hard and quite badly hurt herself. All dogs miraculously came out of the ordeal unhurt.
So, who was at fault? How did I deal with it? The answer is, know one! And calmly. Sure I could have gone mad at the lady for not having control over her dog, I would have been in my rights to have restrained her dog if I needed to, but I didn't. Why? Because the lady had control over her dog (despite the extendable lead) until out of nowhere the dog lunged forward. She was caught off guard and there was nothing she could have done to prevent it at that point. Why didn't I restrain the dog? Partially because I couldn't get hold of it because I had a dog in each hand, but mainly because someone has to have a chance of getting away. If I had all three dogs tight on their leads whilst this was unfolding, who has the chance to back off, call time out. Penny had the length of her lead to make her own decisions about where she felt safest. Revie, I had close to me to make sure as little of him as possible was on show for the other dog, and the other... I used my body and legs to block her from getting near revie again. Until I could work out the plan that unfolded.
The point of this long winded post.... reactivity comes in many different forms and it's important to remain calm and have a plan of what you would do in that situation. I have rehersed this many times in my head knowing that I have 2 large dogs, 1 of whom is reactive. I always planned to get them into a garden and handle it the way I did and it potentially saved my greyhound today. HAVE A PLAN for the worst.

WELL... we still have a long way to go with this big lad and walking his little brother at the same time isn't easy. 3 weeks ago I had to take this guy back home mid walk because his behaviours on a walk where just too extreme, even for me lol. Today with a few equipment changes (just need the leads changing) and lots of positive reinforcement and patience, Frank was beginning to show signs of change, only slight and possibly not noticeable to most but I am super proud of him this morning.
And yes I am aware that he is still pulling occasionally and needs redirecting at one point but.... the redirection was to avoid an on coming dog who Frank does not like. By turning him back the other way gave him the space he needed to appropriately cope with the situation he was faced with, which he did.
We have limited spaces left for our services in HULL for dog walks. If you do need assistance with pet care please don't hesitate to contact us. If we cannot help, we will find someone who can!

Jasper's favorite game after his walk, and providing even more stimulation for him routing and searching for the treats. #happydogs #thepetdogacademy #dog #walking #hull
One of our resident doggos Dave in his new protective boots. Dave has issues with his paws and has to wear them as a moisture barrier. He is super fussy with new things but has taken it like a champ with lots of positive reinforcement and patience. We can already see a difference in him since being able to get out and about again.
Our resident doggo Dave going to his first Hydro session today. We are all super proud of him for a dog that hates water he loved his first session
We had a lovely moment tonight in group. Luigi (Schnauzer) and Maisie (maltipoo) had a lovely interaction tonight. Luigi struggles with people approaching him and will often bark and back away, he is also the same when other dogs come too close. Maisie struggles a lot with dogs approaching her and often hides behind her mum. Well these two are making the perfect team, allowing each other the time they need to approach with confidence and creating those vital positive associations with other dogs. We are half way through our socialisation group and the progress they have already made is lovely to see. Luigi actually allowed someone other then his owners and myself to stroke him! And maisie actually volunteered herself to say hello to him. By allowing the dogs the space and freedom they needed, it became their choice of what action they took in greeting each other.
'In the Park week' Tonight our socialisation group looked at working with distractions whilst on a 'field'. We had a couple of dogs along the outside walking around on lead, whilst another dog would be playing in the distance. It was the owners job to encourage their dogs to return to them by using their recall cues whilst ignoring the distractions going on around them. This was a good lesson for the pups, and the owners. Dogs can be amazing at recall in the house, garden, or even the field you visit every day. But what about that new place you visit? A holiday you take your dogs on? A new forest? What is encouraging your dog to return to you when there are thousands of new distractions around them? Constant exposure to new environment! Positive associations upon returning to you! Consistency in cues and training methods! And....... EXCITEMENT. You have to encourage your dog to make the right decision and there is nothing wrong with big open arms, down at their level whilst calling them, make yourself more interesting then their environment, and do it over and over again. Don't ever think your dog has a solid recall until you can do it in any environment with a number of distractions. We had some great recall going on tonight with our pups, especially towards the end of the session when they had calmed down slightly and fully understood the exercise. Well done guys
Kobe has recreated one of our snuffle boxes at home. Such great enrichment for your puppy's senses and mental stimulation. Throw a few treats in the bottom and let them go wild. Cardboard, toilet rolls and shredded paper... simple x
Hi Everyone, please remember these few bits and bobs before Thursday. Anyone attending should have received an email containing times and location. Please arrive on time as the session needs to start at 7pm, there is enough space outside of the building to toilet your pooch before you enter so please ensure you do. See you all then.
