We are a registered breeder and have a number of breeders, breeding exclusively for The Tortoise Shop, located throughout the UK so that all of our tortoises are UK captive bred. This allows our customers to trust in us to home happy and healthy tortoises. We have a team of experts in the office Monday to Friday who are always happy to give help and advice to customers and members.

Don't fall for misinformation, just because it's from a "reliable" source and plastered throughout social media (example linked below and addressed in this post). Our advice is still accessible via our pinned post. (At time of writing, TTS website is still running too). You've not been left to fend for yourself, the answers to your questions are there 😊

As much as tortoises love Dandelions, they are a moderation feed. What is correct is foraging will always keep costs down, as well as buying seeds and growing your own flowers indoors.

DO NOT feed fruit and veg to your Mediterranean and russian species (Hermanns, Horsfield, Marginated, Spur-thigh). Most lettuces also lack basic nutrition and should be fed in moderation.

Moss is damp, the above tortoises don't need moss,/damp substrate, reusable or not.

Your vet does not always know what's best for your tortoise. They learned about tortoises long before the advice changed for the better and some didn't catch up with new research.

Do not cut off or reduce your tortoise's lighting to save money. It's integral to their health, and only as costly as having your lights on in the afternoon-late evening or leaving the landing/bathroom light on overnight. Combination bulbs will always be the most cost effective, as they last a year and are often covered by a warranty if bought from a reputable seller (not from Amazon or eBay).

**Link strictly as an example of the misinformation circulating, from places who should know better**

Just because a tortoise is surviving, it doesn't mean it's thriving. Use our pinned post if you are unsure of anything. Look after your shelled babies 🐒

As many of you are aware, The Tortoise Shop is now closed. With the bad luck we've had with manufacturer/supplier delays within the last year, followed by the ceasing of our animal courier, we just weren't able to survive these difficult and increasingly uncertain times. This is also not a decision made by Gemma and me, contrary to popular belief, this was not our business, we worked within the company for many years, keeping things running for as long as we possibly could, from the low position we held and are just as sad to see it go, and at a loss for where we fit in the world right now.

We understand that there are many who will feel we are abandoning them in terms of care advice and after care for your tortoises. I apologise for not posting sooner. We have comprised a series of files to help you along your way. They will be posted in their own post, so as not to be lost in my ramblings. The settings on this page have also been adjusted, you may notice that there is no option to message us, this has been switched off. Comments have also been switched off, to allow this page to run, unmanned, for information only. It is all of our information, which we feel is important for those of you who have been victims of the "elite" tortoise keepers running groups and forums. This allows you to gain the information you need without outside influence. Leaving you free to do as you would like with the information, against all the online contradictions you may come across.

I apologise for going on. We'd like to thank you all for your continued support over the years. Some of you we'll never forget for the right reasons, I hope your tortoises continue to thrive.

Natalie and Gemma

Does anyone else get as excited as I do, when they find a new foraging spot?
I found this lovely field full of Plantain and Deadnettle on my shortcut to vets last weekend (with one of my cats), not far from my house too 😁
We already have two types of Geranium, Viola, Pansy, Sow Thistle, Nipplewort, Forget-Me-Not and Dandelion growing in our garden, so the addition of these two, plus the flowers currently sprouting on the windowsill, gives plenty of variety 🌼🐒

Here are the photos to accompany yesterday's videos, which have mysteriously vanished.

The Marginated hatchlings have their certificates, so are ready to go. The Hermanns and Spur-thigh certificate should be with us within the next few weeks, but pre-orders are live in the website 😊

I apologise if I missed any comments on the previous post before it vanished. I'll post the videos again tomorrow, if I can't bring the last post back πŸ€”

𝐌𝐒𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐑𝐒𝐩𝐩𝐒𝐧𝐠

We are seeing numerous reports on Facebook and receiving emails and calls about people 'acquiring' tortoises and looking for advice on how to keep said tortoise. We instantly encourage all reporters to find the original owner, by checking for a microchip and then posting online and asking around vets for reports of missing tortoises. The only sure way to get your tortoise back if it is lost or stolen is to microchip your tortoise.

You can check to see if your tortoise was pre chipped by the breeder by looking at your tortoise's certificate. The certificate number will be listed in the "Description of Specimens" box, under the hatch date.
If your tortoise was pre chipped by the breeder, it is an unregistered chip and needs registering through a microchipping registration site (there are a few). You can then pass this information onto your vet, as they normally have microchip details listed for all registered pets.

If your tortoise is not microchipped, we do recommend taking your tortoise to the vet, once their plastron length reaches 100mm to get microchipped. Vets will register your details on the microchip there and then.

It's going to be a hot one this weekend, don't forget to keep your tortoises well hydrated and keep an eye on your temperatures, indoor and outdoor. Your lamp can reach highs of 50 degrees Celsius in a room receiving direct sunlight on a hot day. It's absolutely ok to switch your lamp off at lunchtime when temperatures are soaring 🐒😎

**SELF ISOLATION AND HOW YOU CAN STILL GIVE YOUR TORTOISE A VARIED DIET**

I know we're all getting sick of the current crisis talk, but it's reached that point where we all know someone effected by it. We just want to have a word about how you will feed your tortoise if you are told to self isolate. It may be tempting to buy pellets or feed your tortoise solely on dried flower supplements, but it is important to try to maintain their fresh diet. Here are some tips to help you feed your tortoise through isolation;

- If you do not already have it, we recommend you start by downloading The Tortoise Table app. Simply open your app store on any device and search "Tortoise Table".

- Use the filter to find houseplants, these will grow well indoors. You can also filter solely by "safe to feed", so you can feed your plants on a daily basis.

- Look at what you can grow easily in a pot in your garden. We've checked, if your whole family is isolating, you are allowed to go into your own garden to pick your weeds and flowers.

- If you don't know where to start looking for easy to grow flowers, we have done the work for you. We have done our research and grown them ourselves, to ensure that we have flowers for everyone, even those without a green thumb (that includes me). You can find our easy to grow indoor mix and our easy to grow outdoor mix here https://www.thetortoiseshop.com/tortoise-food
Make sure to use the option box to add a coleus house plant to your indoor flower order, they grow exceptionally fast indoors (have a look at my blog https://www.thetortoiseshop.com/coleus-seed-progress )

- And not forgetting, get to know your safe to feed common weeds. I have included photos of the some of the most common ones I can think of, under "safe to feed".

09/01/2020

If you're not too sure on how to use the filters on the Tortoise Table app. This is how I use it to find which seeds I want to buy to grow indoors. There are so many options here too. You can even choose a colour, if you're looking for a particular flower and you don't have to choose a safety option, if you're not yet sure if your unknown plant is safe to feed
