We don’t think it's too early to announce our 4th annual Rootstock Festival will take place on Saturday 21st June. Here’s a few shots from last year’s successful event for your viewing pleasure whilst we encourage you to add it to your diaries, although there is no way we will let you forget between now and then!

Whilst locking the gates at the end of the day at Rooted last week we spotted a Red Kite hovering above, she seemed to be “casing the joint.” Perhaps she’s seen the night-time wildlife activity we get on site, although we’re not sure a Red Kite can manage a whole rabbit, reckon it’s in league with our resident fox! At Rooted in Hull, we’re coaxing nature back into the city!

We have always strived to raise awareness surrounding mental health in our community. There is tons of stuff out there detailing how physical work can help both our physical and mental health. Martin took the Rooted ‘know-how’ to the Newland Avenue Mental Health Allotment (Hull) this week and helped them build some raised beds. The more we grow, the more we grow. It works for people and food!

The Daffs are out, so it's definitely time to get some food in the soil. Wednesday is our open volunteering day when all are welcome to come and help us all grow together. There's always a hot meal as part of each session, this week the veggie soup travelled from Doncaster, and it contained the last few spuds from last year's harvest!

We don’t wait for the good weather folk on tele to tell us when Mother Nature has begun to spread her magic, we just look into every nook and cranny of the space we have created down by the river. We often get soil delivered in these sacks; they had a bit of cleared garden waste in them, but these daffodils had different plans, proving that any space can be used to grow.

It won’t be long before everything on site is in full bloom and our work here will be rewarded again. Hope to see you down here, Wednesday is a good day to come and have a look around from 10 am, but as the weather turns nicer, if the gate is open, we’re open!

Come and find us on St Peter’s Street, Hull. We’re next to the Royal Mail parcel building!

Good, home-cooked food is at the heart of all we do at Rooted. Last weekend almost all of our board of directors gathered for a meeting with Matt, who is helping us with our transition into becoming a registered charity, fingers crossed for this one. Neil’s soup went down very well, all served up from his mum’s stewpot, the red and white one in the background, which is almost 60 years old.

You will be the first to know if we are successful with our charity application, we’re doing all the right things, hopefully we don’t need luck, just the hard facts of what’s required to combat loneliness and social isolation whilst encouraging more awareness of sustainable food sources.

We grow people and food at Rooted in Hull.

Join the Anlaby Road Assembly this weekend (Sunday 14th March).

We've been really impressed with our friends at Cooperation Hull's ideas and actions around food, community and creating positive change in our lovely city.
Wanna here more about it all? Get involved? Here's how:

"Have you heard about the Anlaby Road Assembly launching in March? It's a series of events in the Lonsdale Centre, deciding what we need, and rolling up our sleeves to get it done! The open day will have stalls, food and arts workshops, a chance to tour the historic Lonsdale Centre and have your say in how it could be changed and redecorated!

Then we're grabbing paint brushes and doing the job together.
Next, we'll be looking at the other things we want to change in our neighbourhoods. Wage slip always seems too far away? Let's talk about savings clubs - saving money together, without payday loans. Food bills driving you mad? Let's talk about food coops.

Energy prices making you miserable? Let's talk about community energy. It's all possible, if we work together. See you there! (A free lunch and stuff for the kids to do at every event). Search Cooperation Hull for more info."

Preparations!

We’re not the only ones who have made it through the winter, relatively unscathed! This kale made it into nearly every soup we cooked last year and it's still going! We love to observe the growing process as it repeats its cycle each year.

Also, beekeeping news soon!

Another great day of volunteering at Rooted in Hull. The sun shone and we had a few extra visitors down for a spot of lunch. Rooted favourite Will Hale even travelled up from London for another visit, you may remember he did a study using some of our volunteers last year, we blogged about him, check out the website to see more. We're pleased to have helped with his work, especially as he passed with distinction, although we expected nothing less!

This week, the Rooted team all sat around a table whilst on a course in the city, then we went to the chippy for our lunch.

Our Daz had other ideas and only cost us a pot of Yorkshire caviar for his non-deep-fried version. Yum!

Hull's annual seed swap, speaks for itself. Taking place now at Jubilee Central, Hull city centre. We brought some stuff to swap and we have taken some of what we need to get on with our growing for the coming season. It's time to start planning what you will grow too, what do you fancy eating from your own garden, it definitely tastes better we reckon

Adrian Fisher is the founder of Rooted in Hull. Recently retired from his role in charge of our urban farm space, he spent a good portion of his formative and adult years around the farming industry, which is where he gained the passion for producing high quality food, whilst being aware that not everybody has ready access to that quality. This is one of the reasons Adrian had the idea that Rooted could be a place in the city centre that, through physical demonstration of more sustainable food production practices, could raise awareness in our community about where our food comes from.
A life in farming has furnished Adrian with a wealth of experience and knowledge of those food production technologies, but this month we got him to plough a little deeper than the norm. The resulting harvest yielded a surprising story from his early childhood on the farm. Over to Adrian it is then…

It's only a few weeks until we will start to usher in the new spring season, and we are already starting to prepare our growing areas. Wednesdays are our general volunteering day, when everybody is welcome to come down and help us all to grow together. We meet at 10 am for a few hours and always sit down together for a hot meal and sometimes a quiz!

If you feel you can, have a look at our website, where we have just upgraded our donation button, converting it back into one that actually works! Any donations will go towards improving the quality of the services we provide onsite at Rooted and in the community, details of which can also be found on our website. https://rootedinhull.org.uk/

On this day last year, we posted a photo of some snowdrops which went unusually viral. The photo was taken just outside Rooted in Hull, you will find us on St. Peter’s Street. We pay close attention to Mother Nature’s signaling. This means she’s almost ready to allow us to start growing people and food again, it's time for us to start planning what we would like to grow in 2025. Before we know it, we’ll be breaking ground (albeit in a raised bed!) Is this the year that one of you at home grows some of your own food for the very first time? Let us know, or come and see us, we have a few jobs to do, especially on Wednesdays from 10 am.
