Meet the elusive Greater pipefish! πŸ”

From the same family as seahorses, Greater pipefish are commonly found around the British Isles and the Mediterranean. Like seahorses, the male pipefish is the one who holds the fertilised egg within their brood pouch!

They can often be found hiding amongst seagrass meadows and can be spotted by eagle-eyed visitors in our Cool Seas area. 🌱

Here you can see Senior Aquarist, Paul, acclimating and releasing Butterfly splitfin fish into their new habitat in Deep Blue One!

Acclimating new arrivals involves carefully matching water parameters such as temperature and pH to ensure a habitat exactly meets a species' requirements. This process can take time with water changes being undertaken very slowly. Once everything is exactly perfect, we then allow them into their new home. πŸ’§

Butterfly splitfin fish used to be prevalent throughout the Ameca River drainage in Mexico but they are now a Critically Endangered species on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as their wild population has drastically reduced.

Mature females produce live young and can give birth every 6 – 10 weeks! The males can be identified by a yellow band across their tail. Come and find out more about this species in Deep Blue One! 🐟

A 'pup'date on our baby rays!

Our young Blonde rays are settling in well behind-the-scenes, and having used up all their yolk reserves, are now feeding on small pieces of shrimp, mussel and fish. 🐟

The team are weighing and measuring the ray pups every two weeks to closely monitor their development.

Our Crew enjoyed getting out in the sunshine yesterday to take their quarterly water quality samples from Lincolnshire's blow well sites. β˜€

The Deep is pleased to support the Lincolnshire Chalk Streams Project, helping to assess how suitable some of the blow wells might be to receive populations of the rare Crystal Moss animal by contributing our expertise in water analysis. πŸ§ͺ

It's World Krill Day! 🦐

Did you know, krill are one of the most ecologically important marine crustaceans? Though small, they are a vital food source for many marine animals, including whales, seals and penguins. πŸ‹

Many species of krill exhibit β€˜vertical migrations’, travelling to the ocean’s surface during the day to feed and back down to the depths at night. This provides both surface and deeper-sea predators with a food source, making this species a valuable part of the ocean ecosystem. 🌊

Working in collaboration with the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, we recently hosted two Shark Egg Case Hunts at YWT Spurn National Nature Reserve. 🦈

Across both hunts, a total of 29 egg cases were found and recorded, 28 of which were Small-spotted catshark egg cases, one of the most commonly recorded on our coastline. We were also delighted to find a Spotted ray egg case on our first hunt!

This data has been submitted to The Shark Trust, helping them to build a bigger picture of native species presence and diversity on our UK coastline! πŸ”
