Behind-the-scenes of the igloo build 🎬
A total of 1,412 milk bottles were used for this project!
The igloo took around 58 hours to construct, reduced to a 30 second timelapse!
Well done to all our Crew involved in the build! 👏
The milk bottles are made from HDPE (high density polythene) which is 100% recyclable and can be recycled up to 10 times!
The full igloo (including the glue used to assemble) will be recycled once our winter event has finished, and the lids will be donated to a local school for them to create furniture from! ♻

We were delighted to welcome the team, volunteers and puppies from Guide Dogs North East to The Deep yesterday.
This visit formed part of the puppies' socialisation training, getting them used to new sights and sounds! 🐠

We are delighted to reveal that our penguin chick is a.... 💙🩷
The penguin team waited until the chick had its first moult, which usually occurs several months after hatching, before sending their feathers for a DNA check.
A penguin chick’s sex cannot be confirmed without a DNA check, as there is no other way to differentiate them! 🐧
The chick can be spotted at the end with their new blue and white wing bands on!

After recently passing his Dive Master Qualification, Gav took his first dive this week! 🤿
Complete with 'P' plates, Gav dived with two of our Aquarists and watched them carry out a feed for all the species in Endless Ocean.
Our Supervisors monitor the divers from the surface and the team always dive in pairs. The Aquarists use a mixture of hand signals and a special interface system to communicate with each other under the water. 🫧

Here you can see Senior Aquarist, Paul, acclimating and releasing Butterfly splitfin fish into their new habitat in Deep Blue One!
Acclimating new arrivals involves carefully matching water parameters such as temperature and pH to ensure a habitat exactly meets a species' requirements. This process can take time with water changes being undertaken very slowly. Once everything is exactly perfect, we then allow them into their new home. 💧
Butterfly splitfin fish used to be prevalent throughout the Ameca River drainage in Mexico but they are now a Critically Endangered species on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as their wild population has drastically reduced.
Mature females produce live young and can give birth every 6 – 10 weeks! The males can be identified by a yellow band across their tail. Come and find out more about this species in Deep Blue One! 🐟
