Day late! Sorry! Nov cash prize draw!
230g hoglet, Betty, has not long arrived. Seen in daylight hours for two days a few doors up from me. No obvious injuries, and looks in better shape than most; but as you know, looks are deceiving. Poop test in the morning to decide what ails Betty.

UPDATE: 18/11/24 Mika is back from the vets- thankfully no wounds found! He will stay with us a few more days to be monitored further.
938g Mika arrived today. He was found curled up in the feeding station during the daytime. Healthy Hedgehogs do not sleep outside of their nest and so Mika arrived to be checked.
Mika refuses to unfurl which indicates he hie hiding injury. Upon inspection we can see a swollen sheath and he has ringworm. His hind legs are tucked in so tightly we cannot see them. Now he has warmed up, he has received pain relief, antibiotics and ringworm treatment.
Tomorrow morning he will get a thorough examination by our vet team at Norwoods in Beverley.

🎉today’s release!🎉
Alex came to us in such a bad condition we thought he would not survive.
He was not only very thin, dehydrated and full of endoparasites, he couldn’t stand without one hind leg collapsing under him.
Xrays revealed muscle wastage in that leg but no other problems, a mystery why one leg was so depleted of muscle.
He hydrotherapy and physiotherapy in the evenings, and was treated for his other ailments too.
Today he returned to his garden for a soft release, which we feel gives them a better chance to adapt and acclimatise.
Soft release is a large run like a rabbit run with a hedgehog house inside. Here the hedgehog can nest build and feed. After two weeks the run is removed. By this time, the hedgehog knows his shelter and food supply and at this time of year hibernate if he wishes to.
If they are placed into a house without the run, chances are that they will rush off into the wild, which is ok but when it is cold & wet, and insects have hibernated, they find themselves without shelter and food after having had 5* b&b ! So soft release is a much kinder option.

203g hoglet Bauble has evaded capture for a couple of days when seen in daylight and finally got here last night. Sub cut fluids, and treatment for lungworm have commenced.
As always, and we cannot stress this enough, a hedgehog in daylight is poorly and needs to be taken straight to a rescue for treatment.

UPDATE: 21.50 sadly Spice has passed away
RIP🌈🦔😢
SPICE arrived here from #seaton after being found sleeping exposed. Unfortunately Spice is seriously cold and being warmed in the incubator. There is very little response from Spice and sadly I really do not think he will pull through.
Poorly hedgehogs cannot regulate their body temperature, hence appearing in the daytime when the temperature is warmer. If they don’t get rescue help, their organs start to shut down with hypothermia, and die.
Please, if you see a hedgehog out in the daytime, put it in a high sided box and contact and take to your nearest rescue.
