I use one of the most up to date professional veterinary ultrasound scanners when scanning at my home premises, which gives high resolution images and videos. I do not offer AI, or progesterone testing. Note - the drawing of blood for the purpose of progesterone test MUST be carried out by a vet, or a vet nurse when there is a vet on the premises. There are however a lot of so called fertility cli
nics offering this service against UK law. Pregnancy can be confirmed from 28 days after the last mating, although optimum results are achieved from around day 30 - 35 of your bitch's pregnancy, any earlier can give a false result. Please note that any indication of numbers is an estimate as re absorption can occur and not all foetuses may be seen Calcification of foetal bones is around day 45, but can sometimes be seen earlier. If you need to cancel your appointment, I would appreciate 24 hours notice so I can offer that time to another client.

🌰 Conker season is here...
As autumn arrives, conkers (horse chestnuts) start falling, and while they might seem like fun toys for your pets, they can be dangerous! ⚠️
👉 Toxicity: Conkers contain a chemical called aesculin, which is toxic to dogs and other pets if ingested. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhoea, and abdominal pain.
👉 Choking hazard: Their size and shape make them a choking risk or cause intestinal blockages.
🚫 Prevent accidents: Keep an eye on your pets during walks and in the garden, and make sure to remove any conkers they might find.
🐾 If your pet ingests a conker, contact us, your vet, or the nearest vet immediately!

⚠️⚠️CANINE GASTROENTERITIS OUTBREAK WEST MIDLANDS⚠️⚠️
⚠️We have been made aware that there is Gastroenteritis sweeping the West Midlands area, particularly Coventry. This is a severe stomach bug with main symptoms being diarrhea, lethargic, not eating, vomitting.
⚠️To prevent your dog catching this, please avoid areas where many dogs will have been such as parks, vets, daycares and groomers. Be mindful of what your dog is sniffing and licking as Gastroenteritis is spread via urine, saliva and faeces.
⚠️Be aware of the consistency and frequency of your dogs poo 💩 A small amount of fresh bright red blood might be visible due to straining. If you suspect your dog may have gastroenteritis you will need to see a vet for probiotics and possibly IV fluids. Keep your dog at home to contain the spread. Wash hands thoroughly as well as anywhere they have been such as the car and home with disenfectant. Your dogs Toilet areas outdoors may also need sloshing down with disenfectant. Disenfect shoes that may have walked in areas that could be contaminated by other dogs.
⚠️Please be aware SOME strains of gastroenteritis can be zoonotic meaning they can spread between other species of animal including humans!
NB⚠️⚠️⚠️ WE WERE INFORMED BY A VETERINARY CENTRE WHO HAVE SEEN A HUGE WAVE OF CASES THIS WEEK! Not google.

To the person who has just found this page and called me, but ended the call when I said Oxytocin should be administered by a vet and now will not answer the phone to me. Please note as this is very important.
If your vet has recommended your bitch has oxytocin, they must have examined her first to ensure a puppy is not presented sideways and blocking the birth canal. It is illegal for anyone other than a vet to administer the drug to someone else's dog.
If your bitch has a small pelvic canal the fetuses will not be able to fit through and she may require a cesarean. Oxytocin increases the strength of the contractions, and your bitch will be in tremendous pain if she cannot pass the puppies, please get professional help.

I received a telephone call last night from someone wanting advice on supplements given during pregnancy. He referred to some articles on my website about breeding and whelping matters, but as it is not possible to take into account individual situations and circumstances, the links were removed some years ago. Due to the tone of voice and threatening nature I ended the call and blocked the number. This person has now left an aggressive message on my mobile and also tried to call my husband. No idea how he got his number either, so I am thinking it is a set up.
His voicemail said he was a top breeder known up and down the country and would leave negative google reviews and post all over social media saying I was only after money, which for those that know me, know couldn't be further from the truth. If anyone sees anything, can they let me know please.

Routine scan on a clients cat (named Baby) that she didn't think was pregnant, but wanted to check just in case. She wasn't pregnant but the moral of the story is that it is always best to have a scan as even if a dog/cat has been mated, they are still at risk of a pyometra infection. I had my suspicions that something wasn't right, and referred client to the vet as a matter of urgency. She is in theatre as we speak being spayed, fingers crossed it was caught early enough and she will be ok.
UPDATE - When vets opened Baby up they said she was full of pus, so although caught early, it was a nasty closed pyo. closed being the more fatal of the two types. She is eating and drinking this morning and doing really well.

There are two most commonly used methods of checking your bitch's progesterone levels before mating, one being bloods (which must be taken by your vet), the other with Vaginal Cytology where a swab is taken for examination under a microscope to establish at what stage of a heat cycle a dog is in. Whilst Cytology is a relatively simple procedure, interpreting the results can take years of experience.
There is no guarantee with any form of progesterone testing that your bitch is going to get pregnant, but even less so with cytology if the sample has not been interpreted correctly.
There is no doubt, in my experience when scanning dogs, that a natural mating is always best, a bitch will often not accept a dog if she is not ready and an experienced stud dog will not be interested if she isn't. I liken AI the same as IVF for women, and we know there is a low success rate with that too. However, there is a time and a place of everything, and AI is obviously necessary if using frozen or imported semen, and can be very successful when you get the progesterone levels right.
So this brings me to a few clients I have seen over the last week, all had a bitch that had been mated with AI and all had used cytology. Every single one of these dogs had been scanned already and told the dogs were pregnant (not one of them were). A client this morning was told, 'there could be one puppy, but it could be poo, she most likely reabsorbed the rest'. I was speechless.
I really feel for these people, after spending hundreds of pounds in stud fees, and putting all their faith in someone, it is a huge let down. If anyone wants advice on where to use for progesterone testing, cytology and AI please pop me a message and I can point you in the right direction.

Is my dog Bloating?
Recognising GDV/Bloat – Signs & Symptoms
Someone asked in a group "How can you tell the difference between extreme anxiety in dogs to that of bloat?"
The most important thing is to understand what is normal for YOUR dog, you cannot understand abnormal if you don't understand what is normal.
Every dog is different, and bloat presents differently in many dogs.
Do you understand how to check for a Pulse? CRT? Mucous Membrane Colour? Breathing? Signs of Shock? If not, find a good canine first aid course by an experienced instructor and learn.
Even for experienced people bloat can be very difficult to recognise in its early stage, this is where knowing your dog is important.
Just as with heat injury, rapid recognition and treatment is key to survival.
We often hear "catch it early and get to a vet fast", which ofcourse is correct but, it's not always so simple.
In an ideal world we would catch it early but rarely is everyone so lucky.
Many will know the common signs which are passed around to make everyone aware but, it's very important to note the common signs are not always present early on, or even at all, one reason it can be easily missed and one reason which makes it so dangerous.
The most common sign everyone knows as retching or unproductive vomiting which would clearly indicate bloat as a major possibility to many of us is not always present, so do not rely on it being present to indicate a bloat.
Pale MMs and slow CRT are not always an early sign of shock, it can be the opposite, early (acute compensatory) shock can show as brick red gums (hyperemic) with a fast CRT, before progressing to the next (early decompensatory) stage of shock, which will then show as pale MMs and slow CRT, by then it's very serious.
The abdominal swelling behind the ribs is also not always present, that is a common sign in less fit dogs, well conditioned dogs such as sporting or working dogs, or if you do any fitness with your pet, can have a good strong abdominal core which can hold the stomach up under the rib cage, then when the stomach expands will show as distention in the rib cage with a more barrel like shape to the whole body.
If the stomach is distended and taut it will sound like a drum when you tap it.
Tripod stance, legs apart to take pressure off the abdomen.
A rapid thready pulse.
Shallow, rapid breathing as the stomach puts pressure on the diaghram and lungs, preventing the lungs from inflating.
Drooling, excessive salivation, foaming at the mouth.
The most common earliest sign is often your dog just not seeming himself, unable to get comfortable, just keep a close watch, palpate the abdomen, it should feel soft, you should be able to get your fingers partially up under the ribs, know what feels normal for YOUR dog.
In some of the deeper chested dogs they'll sometimes have an enlarged spleen, so as the stomach rotates it pulls the spleen with it and will cut off some of the blood flow to the spleen, and with that the spleen will get engorged and you can sometimes palpate that, so if your dog is not quite right but is not distended and you feel that big lump in his abdomen be concerned it is a torsion, and is just under his rib cage.
If you have any doubt at all at anytime, just go to a Vet, in some cases it can and does progress very fast, many think it builds up slowly over a few hours, it can, but not always, it can in some cases progress and kill in less than 30 mins, GDV kills in 2 ways, rapid or slow, rapid is due to obstructive shock and can progress fast!
Understand what is normal for YOUR dog, and the signs of GDV, the signs are not always clear, they are never the same for every dog.
The following are some videos but understand not all dogs present like this and many will not in the early stage...
Bloating Akita
A video showing a dog in the middle to late middle stages of bloat. Used by some as a training video, some may find it a difficult watch. This dog, Roscoe, was saved. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=U1WrT2719yo&feature=youtu.be
Another video example of a dog bloating, it doesn't look as serious as the previous example but this dog is in a serious condition, apart from his stomach distension he looks pretty good in himself while at the vet waiting to go to the ER, those who might not have a good understanding of bloat may be tempted to wait and see.
This video along with the previous shows the variation in how bloat can present, it is never the same for every dog, know what is normal for YOUR dog. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=37Xs10PQEmk&feature=youtu.be
A good visual presentation of what GDV/Bloat is, and does, if you are not familiar, and may help you understand why it may present with some of the signs & symptoms which it sometimes does. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rf3bZUpMlN8&feature=youtu.be

30 day ultrasound
Coco 40 days gestation, think she is cooking a little Tyrannosaurus 😀
The optimum time for a first scan is between day 28 - 35, and I cannot be held responsible if a scan is carried out too early leading in a false result. I offer a professional experienced service, I am trained to Level 2, and a full member of the Animal Ultrasound Association. Price for a scan at my home between 9am - 5pm is just £20, or £30 on evenings and weekends. Home visits to you are from £35 within a 5 mile radius of DY6 - for a quote on other areas please message me as price depends on mileage/time. I never rush a scan and understand new breeders in particular are anxious as they do not know what to expect and have lots of questions. I have produced a small booklet which I give free to all new breeders and always happy to offer advice at any time over the telephone. Please remember I am not a replacement for your vet, and if anything looks abnormal on your scan, you will always be referred to a veterinarian.
Pregnancy can be confirmed from 28 days after the last mating, although optimum results are achieved from around day 30 - 35 of your bitch's pregnancy. I can also scan cats and rabbits as well as dogs. Please note that any indication of numbers is an estimate as re absorption can occur and not all fetuses may be seen. Calcification of fetal bones is around day 45, but can sometimes be seen earlier. During early pregnancy, the embryo(s), which are only 1 - 2mm in diameter, can be seen within a small amount of fluid. In the following weeks, the fetal sac enlarges and the embryonic tissues become more prominent and the heart is more easily seen.
At an early stage of pregnancy of between 28 - 35 days, it is possible to estimate the number of puppies, but as the pregnancy progresses, this is more difficult, as only part of each puppy can be seen. From 35 days on wards, the fetal skeleton develops and appears white on the ultrasound screen. During late pregnancy the chambers of the heart can easily be identified and organs like the kidneys are more easily seen. Counting the number of puppies at this time is less accurate although any dead puppies can be identified by the lack of heart beats and lack of movement of fetal fluid. Please be aware that an ultrasound showing clear gestational sacks at 30 days post ovulation may provide a count of 5 and look considerable on the screen but are actually often only 3mm in diameter, and still have a huge journey ahead of them. No scanner can guarantee the number of puppies from an ultrasound scan and can only confirm pregnancy on that day.
For a discreet and confidential service I am available 7 days a week. I am available for emergency ultrasounds both in my own or yours to check on a bitch after whelping to confirm there are no retained placenta’s or puppies.
Reasonable steps should be taken to maintain adequate control of your dog during the scan and it is recommended that you have at least a collar and lead available for the appointment, particularly if I am visiting your home where dogs can sometimes be quite excitable. The average ultrasound probe alone costs over £1000, let alone the price of the ultrasound machine itself which runs into several thousands of pounds.
When visiting my home, please ensure children are also kept under control and not left to wander around other parts of my home and bounce on furniture.
Finally, when making an appointment to see me, I am making a commitment to have the time available to spend with you and your bitch. If you cannot attend the appointment, for whatever reason, please do me the courtesy of letting me know.
I may incur a £10 charge for clients who do not turn up for appointments without notifying me when they wish to re-book.
I am a full member of the Animal Ultrasound Association and have achieved the highest qualifications available (Level 2) for an pet ultrasound pregnancy technician.
Every week I hear of someone new setting up in the area offering a cheap mobile scanning service. Some of them have been on a morning course, others have not been on a course at all. Some have a certificate to say they are trained, but many have inadequate knowledge and training and are doing their clients, and their animals a huge disservice – but unfortunately, they are not committing a criminal offense. That is, until something goes terribly wrong.
By using an AUA accredited scanner, you can be assured:
Quality of service – the worst feeling is to pay for a scan, and then realise that you actually feel less sure about your animal than before. Yet, this is becoming an increasingly common occurrence as an increasing number of individuals find themselves out of their depth in front of paying clients.
Honesty of service – AUA scanners will never attempt to offer a diagnosis or replace a veterinary service in any way. Where there is any doubt whatsoever, an AUA scanner will refer you to your veterinarian.
Experience – in addition to scanning experience and training,
Quality and safety of equipment – all of our scanners are trained in ultrasound safety, hygiene and infection control.
Thank you
