The more we can understand our dogs body language--the less our dogs will feel the need to esculate their behaviour in order to be understood. πΎπ€
Teaching tricks isn't just for dog trainers, it should be encouraged with owners and their doggos and there are loads of reasons why! π§
*** It's fun! **
***It builds up your pups confidence ***
***It builds on YOUR confidence ***
***It's great for creating strong bonds between dogs and handlers***
***It's great enrichment for your dogs! ***
*** It can equip them nervous/anxious prone dogs with the tools they need to react positively to certain situations***
***It makes you look really clever! ***
So get out there and teach your doggy friends something new today! ππ₯³

Having the freedom to make choices is a privilege to have (even though it shouldn't be) and as the lucky ones who have this freedom, we should not take this privilege for granted and should be aware of the choices we make on a daily basis.πΉ
This also counts when it comes to training and guiding our dogs. Our doggos are all special enough that they should have the freedom to chose but it is our responsibility as our doggys best friends to help guide these choices, so our dogs make the best choices for them.π¦
The diagram below explains the consequences of our choices when dog training and how our choices need to be considered more deeply. π§

My journey as a dog trainer began seven years ago where I started working at a boarding kennel as a Kennel Hand. As I gained more experience I then moved on to rescue work and have worked at Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, Bath Cats and Dogs Home, Cheltenham Animal Shelter and Dogs Trust. Working in rescue for so long, I have become familiar with working with a variety of dogs with very different personalities and behaviour challenges.
I use positive reinforcement and train with treats, toys and gentle praise. I will always listen to the dog and am a strong believer at taking things at the dogs and handlers paces. Recently I have been diagnosed with ADHD and dyspraxia, having these conditions means I have to carefully adapt and choose my surroundings in order to succeed. I am unable to achieve in the usual way that most can and therefore I have to be creative. This has enabled me to become more empathetic to the individual and has allowed me to become more creative in helping the individual succeed. It is also important to me to keep up with new research in the dog training industry, so I attend behaviour conferences and have done a number of IMDT (Independent Modern Dog Trainer) courses to keep up-to-date with this.
I am very passionate about sharing information and learning from each other. So, in my spare time I have helped organise a dog behaviour conference called Dog Rescue Unites. I am also the Publications Co-Ordinator for INTORescue, which gives rescue workers a base to learn and also to get mental health support as well. As I love to learn so much, I am also studying part-time for a MRes in Anthrozoology (study of human-animal relationship) at Hartpury University.
