Don't shoot the messenger!!

It's that time of year again where I need to put this post up. I know a lot of you are already on your toes but I need to you to plan ahead a few months. The next few months are when we get the most orders and inevitably when we fall behind the most. Pleased not leave it too late for orders that you will want to place. There are postal Christmas cut offs as soon as the 10th of December....which really isn't that far away for us. Orders in the system just now are obviously fine but I can't say for certain how orders placed after this will be. It will obviously all depend on volume and size/type of orders but we are prepared as much as can be. So don't dilly dally....get yer wiggy waggles into gear and get your gears in motion now.

Good morning folks. We have some news....

We did an experiment on Sunday to see how many frame could make in a 4 hour period. The aim was to have our Son do the cutting, leaving Gayle and I to concentrate on sewing. It was a real success. It also means we can now start to build stock of frames. This means, when order's come in, all we'll need to do is pad them the frames out. Which will not only increase the production speed but also production itself.
I'm really interested to see where this takes us now. It's good to feel a bit of excitement in the business again.

We make harnesses the old fashioned way.....

There's been a pompous attitude from some people recently and we've decided to stay well away from it. They seem tortured by what others are doing/not doing and feel the need for paranoid intervention to try to make themselves look greater than others. Boring.
It's actually really healthy not looking at what other makers/manufacturers are doing and just concentrating on our own thing.
It's too easy to get drawn into thinking we need to be bigger and better. Bigger premises, more staff etc means bigger overheads. I don't want bigger overheads. Rents, energy costs etc are all through the roof just now and it makes no sense to waste money on that. I've thought about extra machinery to increase productivity, which might be an option. But in reality we still make harnesses the old fashioned way.. And I shouldn't be embarrassed about that. In fact I should be proud of what we do... And I am.
Being able to run a small business from a studio in the garden is a dream for most people. My harnesses are the best I can make them and I should take a lot of pride from that. It's too easy to allow peer pressure to knock you down. It's too easy to allow others to beat you down. This modern world of social media can be brutal. It's really refreshing just to back off from it and take a bit of time out to remind ourselves what is really important in life. People that want to make your life bad, shouldn't be the things that control your thoughts. Focus on what you do good and give yourself a pat on the back.....and if that means, making harnesses the old fashioned way.... Well that's OK too.

Good morning folks

Thinking out loud here...
We're at the start of the season for alot of people. Currently we are running at 2 months production time but that will be down to 1 month again in the next couple of weeks.
We think with the changes we have made, we'll be able to handle more business. This is also our aim. Pre-cut harness parts has speeded things up quite dramatically and makes the stitching of the frames a lot quicker. Our aim from there would hopefully be for a certain amount of frames already made. Which just leaves them to be padded out when orders come in. This will hopefully help us to progress to other ideas we have to speed up the whole process. None of which deducts from the quality that we try hard to deliver. So for a change I'm feeling good about heading into this new season. There are a lot of positives that I can see ahead. Which is always a nice feeling when running a small family run business.

Rundug Webbing...

I don't often comment on our webbing but I'm very proud of it. Here's a little info...

It took me a lot of years to find, not only the quality I wanted but the manufacturer as well. The majority of webbing we trialled and tested was too flexible. Not tight enough weave. It also wasn't abrasion resistant enough for us. Getting the right quality was paramount if we wanted to make the quality of harnesses we were aiming at..... And we succeeded.
I can't give too much away about the finer details because I don't want others to copy the hard work I've put in but Rundug webbing is made specifically to our spec and is made exclusively for us out of high tenacity polyester. It's tough to cut and is a very tight weave. It's so tight we had to ask our manufacturer to take it down 0.1mm this time because we struggle to get our pins through it.
So there you go. Rundug never scrims on quality. In fact we try our best to get the best quality we can. So when you think about pricing and you are comparing ours to another brand. Bare this in mind👍🙏

This week has been a bit of an eye opener. I had my son do all the heat cutting for me, which left me alone to do nothing but sewing. I couldn't believe how much we got done. He gets some decent pocket money and I was able to make a big dent in a large order. Which also allowed us to finish a lot of smaller orders. I've got another couple of small orders that need finishing today and then hopefully an early finish to spend well deserved time with kids. Just hoping the weather holds out.

2 dog lines and why we make them the way we do.

I see a lot of brands waffling of the advantages of their designs but not honest reasons why they designed them specifically like that. I also don't see any reason to come out with different variations of our lines because I know I've made these exactly how they should be for all the right reasons.

"my harnesses pull off to the side with my double line"

This is mostly to do with the tails being too short. Our tails go all the way up to the adaptor and therefor create less angle in the tails. Hence less likely to pull the harness off to the inside. Harness fit is crucial for this as well though.

"my lines swing heavily like skipping ropes when the dogs are running"

This is because the bungee tied into the tails makes them very heavy. We wanted to eliminate that swing as much as possible, hence why we put the short dyneema reactive bungees at the tug end. Much more reactive and less off putting weight swinging behind the dog. This is a major plus point in the design of our lines.

"I don't like the bungee rubbing on the end of the bikejor/scooter adaptor"

That's why we don't have it there either.

OK, so that's the main design reasons covered. This idea wasn't new to me when we did these lines. I thought of the concept years ago but didn't like the bungee not being in a protective outer sleeve. I could only eventually bring this out when I found a manufacturer that was making this bungee in a dyneema outer.

So there you have the truth and the reasons why I think they are not only the lightest but the best lines on the market. Any questions just ask👍 Billy

I can't speak for other harness makers but I'm sure we must have some of the best chest padding out there. I can't make it anymore padded than we do. This is it with the foot lift at it's highest point and this is a big machine.

Quick update...
Okay so we have slipped back on a few orders. We said this wouldn't happen again but it was kind of out of our hands this time and wasn't down to us taking on too much business...
A culmination of issues starting with how we make the harnesses. A few months ago we made the decision to start making our harnesses differently, with the aim of it speeding things up for us. This worked but set me right back. I've become very much a creature of habit and really struggled to embrace change. I was making so many mistakes and my head was absolutely mince trying to get my head around the differences.
The 2nd issue was a new/old sewing machine we got. We tend to think that getting started on another machine is straightforward but it isn't. They all like to work in their own unique way and like me, be resistant to change. So it took us 2 or 3 weeks to find a bit of common ground. I'd like to think we are there now, so fingers crossed.
Other issues we've had were kids finishing school, Gayle not being able to help out as much as she was and now kids being off school.
So state of play just now is we've fallen back to 3 months with some smaller orders. They will be completed this week. Then we will be 2 months behind. Plus we have a big order that is in that. So I'm thinking being realistic, we'll be looking at an approximately 2 month turnaround for the next month at least. I can't see me being able to change that much with kids being off school.
So please keep this in mind if you are placing orders for the start of the season. We can still take orders just now but please keep in mind what I've said about potential timescales.

Lines... We've always been about making designs as best as we can. No gimmicks, as simple as possible and the best value for money without crimping on quality. I personally can't stand a lot of the waffle I see from some makers and just give you the truth. Let me explain the thinking behind our lines. I've been using Kickbike scooters for 20 years now. Mostly 1 and 2 dog hound but as much as 4 Sibes when I first started. When I first started there was no such thing as the Bikejor adapter that everyone uses now. It was very easy for the line to get snagged and wrap round the front hub, resulting in a quick look to find your ideal spot as you flew over the handlebars. For years later I always found the heavy line weight from the internal bungee a real annoyance. Then when we started making lines and other equipment I set about trying to remedy it. I wanted to put the bungee at the end of the line but was worried about wear and tear. This stayed with me for a lot of years until I realised that they could be made with a dyneema outer. Thus doing away with my concern of wear and tear. The idea was a goer... I was really happy because the simplicity of it was something that made it so unique. Yet to me it was so obvious. I could understand why others might not gel with the concept but my honestly and integrity was more important to me that other people's doubts. Our test team gave it some really rigorous testing in both top level canicross and bike/scooter as well and the reports back were just as I hoped.......Really lightweight, instantly reactive, excellent communication between dog and human. All the stuff that was my aim in designing this type of line. Weight is 86g. So I think this is the fastest, lightest and most reactive line in the market. You heard it here first. Rundug.

Sewing machines have always been designed to do the task intended. Some of the originals are still on the go today. This machine is a Seiko SK-2B. It was designed around the incredible Singer 132k6 but with one major advantage... It's got the much needed reverse lever that the 132 didn't have. I'd wanted one of these machines for ages but couldn't get my hands on one for a few years. I couldn't believe my luck when this one came along. These ones were made in Japan and built to last. There's no reason this one won't outlast me if looked after properly. I see all these new Chinese automated machines now and think I should get on the bandwagon but I just love the feel and sound of this machine. I work with this machine, rather than set it up and let it do the work. It takes more time but we're a team that looks after each other. Like an old land cruiser that you can't get rid of.. Yeah I've got one of those as well😂 I think I'm getting to that age where I don't want to know about the new fancy devices. Just let me do what I know. It's not a bad thing is it?

My creative juices are flowing😂It's been a mad few hours of tinkering and having fun. I've not cared about colours, threads, how rough it looks. It's just been mad full on sewing at 150mph whilst my creative mood is in full flow. So we have the green harness which I discussed in more detail on our Rundug Team group earlier a shoulder harness concept that I haven't done for donkeys years and the orange and black harness is our XPRO but with dryland conversion sizings. I'll do a video in the near future explaining the dryland tweaks in a bit more detail.

In 2010 we set up the first retail shop in the UK to sell sled dog, canicross, bikejor and dog scootering equipment. We stocked and distributed for a lot of the major brands but eventually lost faith in the products we were selling. Either we didn’t like the fit, or it might have been the materials.....or sometimes both. There was only one thing for it...Manufacture our own. We needed a kennel name for our Scandinavian Hound Sled Dogs. We needed a team name for ourselves and we needed a brand name for the equipment we made....RUNDUG. When we first started designing our own equipment, we had no idea it would be as complicated and as time consuming as it is. It has taken us a lot of years and prototypes to get to the stage we are at now.
