🐍 Adder warning!

We treated our first adder bite patient of the year at the weekend, so wanted to remind owners to be vigilant when walking their dogs, particularly through long undergrowth.

At this time of year, the warmer days bring the adders out. However, it’s not quite warm enough for them to be as mobile as they are in the height of summer, so they are much less likely to get out of your dog’s way if they hear them coming.

As the adders are also just coming out of hibernation, their venom sacks are full, which means a bite will be worse than it would be in the autumn.

If you ever suspect your dog has been bitten, please phone us straight away.

We commonly see bites on dogs’ noses or legs. If your dog has been bitten on the leg, please carry them, if you can.

Sometimes, you might not witness the bite, but notice that your dog appears unwell during or shortly after a walk. Signs to look out for include: a swelling, two small holes in the centre of the swelling, howling (in pain), and your dog becoming uncomfortable, lethargic or progressively lame. Some dogs can develop breathing issues, if they have an allergic reaction to the venom.

If you have any queries or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us. 🐍

⭐ Star patient of the month ⭐

This month’s star patient is the adorable Chip. Chip came in out of hours to see our vet Kirsty. He was very quiet for a young Labrador. On examination, he had a very sore tummy and his owners reported that he had vomited and hadn’t eaten all day.

Kirsty was suspicious that Chip had eaten a foreign body, so he was admitted for X-rays and a possible exploratory operation.

The X-rays revealed that there was something in Chip’s abdomen that looked like fabric. He had a general anaesthetic and Kirsty removed a large firm fabric toy that was stuck in his intestines. After a night in the practice on fluids and medications, Chip was able to go home to his very relieved owners.

We are delighted that Chip has made a full recovery.
