It is important that unused and out of date antibiotics are disposed of responsibly.
If you have any dusty old bottles cluttering your medicine cabinet, drop them in with us for disposal.
November is Antibiotic Amnesty month 💊
Please return any unused medicine, in particular antibiotics, for safe disposal even if it is still in date.
Any unused medicine can cause harm to the environment if put in household bins or flushed down the toilet so should be returned to us to be disposed of safely.
Safe disposal of antibiotics will help us to reduce antibiotic resistance, keeping both people and animals safe.

Do you speak guinea pig!? These sociable, energetic creatures can be very communicative, but do you understand what the different noises they make actually mean?
🪱 Lungworm 🪱
We have been seeing a few cases of bovine lungworm cropping up this week. This video shows a feisty lungworm larva found in a dung sample submitted from some coughing calves.
Animals can pick up lungworm larvae from the pasture during grazing, which then travel from the gut to the lungs where they mate and lay eggs. Larvae then hatch from these eggs and travel up the windpipe to be swallowed and passed in the dung, completing the lifecycle.
Cattle with lungworm typically present at the end of summer with a characteristic "husk" cough, but more severe cases can result in respiratory distress and even death. Although cases of lungworm are most common in youngstock, immunity to lungworm is only temporary, so we do sometimes see cases in older cattle too – especially those which have not had much previous exposure to the parasite.
Lungworm can be diagnosed on a dung sample by looking for these larvae, but unfortunately this is not a perfect test as false negative results can occur. It is easily diagnosed on post-mortem.
Please do not hesitate to contact us for advice if you are concerned about lungworm in your herd. Looking forward to the housing period, we want to ensure our animals are entering the byres with as healthy lungs as possible!
