The continued wet weather has seen a recent late flush of grass for many, as such we've been out to treat a a number of downer cows with staggers or milk fever. Ensure at-risk cows have high mag buckets available, ad lib access to straw will also help reduce the risk by slowing gut transit

July has largely been a quiet one for us on the farm front but with a few cows bridging the gap between spring and autumn calving keeping us on our toes... This has been a good opportunity for getting caught up with herd health plans, just as well as the farm assurance inspectors seem to

Worm Warning! 🪱 ‼️ In recent days we’ve seen some very high worm egg counts in lambs. This is hardly surprising given the weather conditions this summer. The good news is these counts have been found as routine monitoring prior to signs of ill health. If you’ve not done any bulk counts in lambs recently, now would be a good time. Please give us a shout to discuss. 🐑

Our July Newsletter is out now. Including advice on lungworm in cattle and weaning lambs.

June and early July have been seasonally quiet for us with the majority of any routine work now completed and stock healthy at grass. Grass growth seems to have been very variable across the area with some reporting plenty of growth, whilst others have run tight with the lack of warmth. A few herds....

May has seen an amazing, if late, flush of grass with silage coming early for many. Coccidiosis outbreaks, classically characterised by scouring calves aged 4-8 weeks have been to the fore as have bull problems. We have seen a few instances of bulls being ’stifled’, where they have sustained inj...

With grass growing, so is the parasite threat to lambs, so we’ve pulled together a bit of toolbox of approaches our sheep farmers can take to minimise the risk to their stock whilst making sure any medications required are used as sustainably as possible

As the grazing season is upon us and lambs are starting to meet most of their nutritional needs from grass rather than the ewe’s milk, we thought it would be timely to share some advice to help farmers adopt the most sustainable approach to worming possible whilst not compromising on the growth ra...

April has seen us busier than usual with C-sections, calvings and the usual seasonal problems. The number of caesars are up significantly on 2023; one theory is that due to the wet back-end of 2023 cows were housed a bit earlier and the quality of silage made last year seems to generally also be ver...

With turnout fast approaching for many, we’re busy helping cows get ready to go out. For some that means a quick pedicure - this foot had a particularly dramatic overgrowth, but after a quick wizz with the grinder it was looking a lot smarter and the cow much more comfortable on her feet!

“Can you use vaccines after a couple weeks if I keep it in the fridge?” is a common question we get asked, and often see discussed on social media too. For almost all vaccines the answer is categorically no! In this superb short video our XL Vets friends at Shropshire Farm Vets put it to the test to prove why you really shouldn’t be keeping vaccines longer than a day when opened 💉 🐑

Clostridial vaccines don't contain preservative, so they don't last after opening. We stored an open bottle in the fridge for a week then got it under the microscope - watch the video to see what we found!

Abortion in lambs. Sadly at this time of year we see a number of flocks affected by infectious abortion issues. A proper diagnosis can help mitigate the impact this year and in future years too. A good rule of thumb is if you get more than 2 abortions in a day, or more than 2% of ewes abort in total, then to get in contact. There is also subsidised blood testing availed for flocks that don’t vaccinate for either Toxoplasma or Enzootic abortion.

Bull Testing - cautionary case example!!

Whilst out testing bulls today, Andrew was cracking on, samples were great, everyone was happy 🙌 (also the sun had made an appearance ☀️). Last bull came in, 2.5 years old, in great physical condition and had been used last year with success 💪

Fully expecting this to be the final pass of the day, we were very surprised to find this bull only around 5% fertile on 2 seperate samples!! To say he failed dramatically is an understatement, and was backed up with all these bent tails found back at the practice. Had this bull not been found today the results could have been a helluva lot worse come scanning time. Just goes to show that you can’t assume anything and prior performance cannot be relied on.

To discuss bull testing or any of your cattle breeding needs (including AI) please contact the surgery and we will gladly assist

In Scotland, sheep scab has been a notifiable disease since 2010, but higher notifications have been recorded in the last 12 months following a government-fu...
