My kind of update photo received this week.
Sarcoid producing a nice eschar and dying off following application of AW-5 cream. Together with a very scenic winter sunrise.

Hopefully as the days lengthen we will get full resolution in this lovely young horse.

Any progress with this horrendous disease is welcome news.

Good to see the team at Edinburgh heavily involved as always with this locally significant disease.

Hopefully some of the Biobank database should take us forward with identifying the causal agent to allow for further prevention.

Research links equine grass sickness to neurotoxic enzyme

Researchers believe they have made a significant breakthrough in identifying a possible cause of equine grass sickness: a neurotoxin, with intriguingly similar actions to snake venom toxins but produced by pasture microbes. This finding has the potential to lead to novel treatments and improved diagnostics for this devastating disease. Congratulations to the team behind this work.

While it is early days, and there is much work to be done, this finding could represent a major clue to help guide investigations. Research scientists now need your help more than ever, both in continuing to build the Biobank of EGS samples, and fundraising to help give further research the green light.

To this end The Equine Grass Sickness Fund will be launching a major fundraising drive in 2025 to support further work – watch this space!

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to our work

🐴 Meet Jude! 🐴

We helped Jude out with a much-needed sedation and leg clip. This gentle giant has a sensitive skin condition hiding under his gorgeous feathers, making his legs very tender to touch. By clipping his legs, his owner can now manage his skin more easily over the winter months.

Clipping like this is essential for managing skin issues such as feather mites, mud fever, or Chronic Progressive Lymphoedema (CPL), which are common in heavier horses and ponies.

Using sedation ensures the process is stress-free for everyone involved—horse, owner, and vet alike! Not only does this keep Jude more comfortable, but it also opens the door to training him to feel more confident about having his legs handled when they're no longer sore.

Early intervention = happy, healthy horses! 🐾✨

The flu virus is not only spread in the air but can also be transmitted on clothes, tack, yard equipment, in water troughs and also feed bowls. Therefore horses and ponies can continue to be infected after the infected horse or pony has gone.

Any horses or ponies that receives their first dose in May will be eligible for a free second dose 4 to 6 weeks later.
