For loan - Tom

Tom is a 9 year old, 13.3hh gelding looking for a new best friend to have fun with. He's done a little bit of everything with his owner, who has sadly outgrown him. Tom's favourite activity is hacking, so would suit someone looking to hack and potentially do pleasure rides. He's forward going but not strong, ridden in a snaffle.

Although Tom isn't strong or silly, he's more of a second or third pony as he enjoys a good canter in the countryside. His owner often goes hacking for two/three hours at a time.

For Sale on behalf of owner - Honey

2 year old Cob x Trotter
To make around 15.2hh

Honey is a quick learner who thrives from a 1 to 1 relationship, taking everything in her stride. She's good to catch, tie up, for farrier. Walks nicely in a headcollar and has also walked out in hand in a bridle. She has travelled on a trailer once and been loaded on and off several times at home.

Honey is vaccinated and wormed up to date and has seen the chiropractor just for the experience.

A lovely mover with three nice paces, Honey needs an experienced owner to bring out her potential.

Introducing Honey ๐Ÿฏ

Honey is a 2 year old Cob x Trotter who is with us on sales livery. She seems to have settled in well so far, not even entertaining the other horses and just filling her belly with grass!

If a human athlete was performing with spit dripping down onto their chest, foaming at the mouth, ๏ฟผ there would be serious inquiry into their mental health and well-being.

โ€œHorses have 3 pairs of salivary glands. The one that seems to come up in this conversation, particularly within the dressage world to justify the foam, is the parotid. The parotid is located just behind the poll, near the atlas (C1) and about in the middle of the neck from top to bottom. In horses that have routinely been held behind the vertical, this gland gets inflamed to the point that it can actually be seen bulging out. The parotid is unique because in addition to saliva, it also releases the protein latherin. The other salivary glands do not. Latherin is the agent that makes both sweat and saliva (when itโ€™s present/over-present) lather up and turn into a white foam. Latherin is an indicator of extremes. Horses can/do sweat and salivate without foaming up. Foam only shows up when things are getting pushed pretty far.
There is a postural component involved with the parotid gland and Iโ€™ll mention it here, but even if youโ€™re in the skeptical camp, this specific mechanism becomes negated by a later malfunction anyway. Over-compression of the parotid gland causes even more latherin to be released than normal. How might one over compress/stress/inflame the parotid gland you ask? Simply spend some time riding behind the vertical. Thatโ€™ll do it.
Now letโ€™s explore the mouth seal and the throat. Iโ€™ll assume that everyone has used a straw and understands the lips function in forming a mouth seal. Yes, there are some differences between horses and people and this is where one of them comes into play. Horses are obligate nose breathers. They cannot/should not breath in or out, by physiological design, through their mouths. This is because of their throat, and particularly the seal in the back of the throat formed by the soft palate and epiglottis. Whenever we have a horse behind the vertical, or if we cause a defensive tongue reaction, the base of the tongue, which is much larger than the flat part we tend to see, pushes up and back where the soft palate and epiglottis are trying to keep the airway (trachea) and the food tube (esophagus) separated.
If this seal fails (โ€œdorsal displacement of the soft palateโ€ if you want to do some google scholar reading), we can get stuff that shouldnโ€™t be there in the lungs, or we get air, that shouldnโ€™t be there, in the stomach (โ€œIโ€™ll take gas colic and ulcers for $800 Alexโ€). In other words, a horse behind the vertical, or having a defensive withdrawal of the tongue is choking themselves because of what or how youโ€™re asking. Maybe thereโ€™s just a little choking (which is easily justifiable, right?), or maybe a lot depending on the degree of offense. No matter the degree, there is some restricting of the airway. If youโ€™ve ever seen tongue ties used in horse racing, this is exactly why they do it. Winners have to breathe and oxygenate as much as possible. So the tongue, which they know IS going to be offended wonโ€™t actually be able to interfere with the horseโ€™s respiration during the race and the anaerobic phase will be pushed off a few strides moreโ€ฆ
So, any time we see white foam in or around the horseโ€™s mouth, we know that in the throat and neck area the parotid gland has been over-squeezed, or the seal made by the soft palate and epiglottis has been broken and the horse is exhaling into the mouth. There is another simple way too. The rider is breaking the seal in the corner of the mouth excessively and repetitiously introducing air into the mouth that way. All 3 of these, are directly the fault of the rider. One of them can still be a problem bitless.
So, for white foam, you either have caused the tongue to be defensive and pushing on the soft palate, have the horse behind the vertical (which is a problem for a multitude of other reasons too, โ€œIโ€™ll take submission through blindness for $1000 Alexโ€) or the rider is over-handling the bit and basically whipping up egg whites into a meringue in the horseโ€™s mouth. If any of these are true, YOU ARE THE PROBLEM, which means you donโ€™t even have to try to communicate with an animal of a different species to fix the problem.โ€ -Daniel Dauphin , creator of an excellent dvd on bits and hitting with extensive research and collaboration with vets dentists and more
