Harry thoroughly enjoyed dishing out the TopSpec Electrolytes & covering everyone (including me & the car) in sun cream today!

When it’s hot like this 🥵 we’re offering plain water, salt water & electrolyte water to all the horses in the fields & their stables so they’ve plenty to drink & choice of being in the sun or the shade! ☀️🕶 we’re also making sure those pink bits are fully covered in suncream!

After many years of trial & error we’ve opted to use haybars as they most closely mimic natural feeding position whilst still allowing us to keep beds clean & tidy. This helps develop the correct muscles over their topline rather than constantly tugging at haynets.

When horses initially come to us, they take a few days to get used to the idea of “unlimited hay” but they quickly settle down and self regulate to the point we find some left over in the mornings (which is the goal as we know they’re full!).

Haybars are made of plastic too, so we can disinfect & power wash between residents to keep everything clean & safe 🦠

🌟Do you Disinfect?🌟

Bio-security is sadly often forgotten about by many yards, but as a Stud with youngstock it’s essential we keep any harmful bacteria & viruses under control.

We choose to use Virkon S, which is a DEFRA approved Broad Spectrum Disinfectant which is proven effective against 61 viruses, 33 bacteria strains & 6 fungi strains. 🦠

We power-wash & Virkon every stable between residents to give that extra peace of mind 🫧🧽

“Tilda” worked hard this morning on her first trip into the fields for fencing. Makes life much easier, and fencing chores much quicker! Anyone else started preparing Autumn fields yet?

Horse are living breathing souls, and deserve to be treated with respect and empathy. I’ve been glad to see recently that tables are starting to turn in the competition world and the welfare of our equines is coming to the forefront.

Horses are amazingly tolerant, giving creatures.

It unfortunately means they’re often exploited due to the ambitions of the human. After their basic needs are met, you must be very thoughtful in the training of your horse.

Your first duty is to preserve the purity of the paces. What does this mean? Walk has 4 beats, trot has 2, canter has 3, gallop has 4. ALWAYS. If not, something is wrong biomechanically, and your horse is at risk of injury. BTW impure paces can usually be detected in a photograph, even though it is only a “moment in time”, AND this applies to all disciplines.

Strapping a horse’s mouth shut with a crank/flash (or other) noseband very often contributes. The fact is, a horse cannot maintain full range of motion with his hind legs if he can’t move his tongue and jaw. FACT.

For jumping, if the horse bolts off - away from, towards, or after a jump, putting on a bigger bit and a martingale will not fix it. If a horse hesitates or stops, pulling out the whip will NEVER make him more confident.

These are just a few hints that your horse is asking for HELP. Go back. Consolidate the basics. Another wonderful thing about horses is they're retrainable. If you ignore the hints, eventually the horse will either break down, or will SHOUT to get your attention, and you will get hurt.

After all, horses are dangerous. We tell everyone that. But actually they are not. We wouldn’t be able to ride them if they were truly dangerous. You know what’s dangerous? People are.

Ponder this excerpt from Franz Mairinger’s book “Horses are made to be Horses”:

I recall an incident in Sydney when we had a lame horse with a very bad tendon, and the rider wanted to start the horse the next day. We asked Roy Stewart, the veterinary surgeon, and he said, ‘Yes, that’s the trouble. People always think that horses are made for man, but that’s not true. Horses are made to be horses’. I thought about that a lot, and decided that if I should write a book I would call it Horses are made to be Horses.

(Franz Mairinger was the first coach of an Australian Olympic Equestrian Team, his excellent book is out of print, but can occasionally be found second hand - buy it if you see it)

Minnie spent all night on guard duty, whilst Harry slept soundly under the biggest tree in the paddock. Sometimes I wonder if she secretly knows he really is her son, and she’s not just his aunty. ❤️

It’s so important horses always have access to grazing or hay! All of ours have more hay in their stable than they can finish 😂

When coming to us, they do sometimes over eat for a few days but as soon as they realise there’s lots more hay to come, and it’ll always be there then they always slow down

"Ad-lib hay makes horses fat".
No, ad-lib hay allows horses to choose when and how much to eat. A healthy horse will frequently take breaks from eating because they are able to self regulate their intake. If a horse just eats and eats, and can't maintain their weight they have a hormone issue. If that happens, you need to help them to regulate their eating, without making them think this is the last meal they are ever going to have. Lower calorie food, smaller holed nets, soaking hay, multiple nets to encourage movement are all suggestions. Work with your vet and an independent nutritionist to come up with a strategy for managing your horse.

Always like to do an early morning check-in on the herd whilst I have my first coffee ☕️

Everyone’s happy munching hay still or dozing over their doors 💕

P.S. Excuse the pile of straw, someone thought it would be funny to tip the clean barrow over 🤦🏼‍♀️

So very pleased that this is finally written into the Highway Code!
