Judging and Showing Changes 2025

Medals:

A review of the criteria for awarding medals at Affiliated shows has been contemplated over many years, but the challenge to achieve harmony across our membership cannot be underestimated and the task therefore has been repeatedly pushed back. The result being that the quantity of shows has increased dramatically. The awarding of a medal has become diluted and devalued, particularly in recent years in the aftermath of the pandemic and other economic events but the decrease in the numbers of animals forward on the day has exacerbated the issue further.

Something had to be done, so in order to properly review the system of awarding medals and make improvements, the Society implemented a 2 year pilot scheme in 2023 in an attempt to tackle these issues and make improvements.

The experiences from this, together with the feedback received from members, shows, competitors and the area associations has allowed the Society to blend it together to be able to consider all the options. These have ranged from removing all medals completely, to keeping them in a reduced format with measures that are likely to restore their value and bring back the prestige of receiving an award. The WPCS has applied all these factors when considering all the different options in search of the best solution across the whole of its membership.

We are a breed society first & foremost so, in considering the options, it is vitally important to be able to provide an opportunity for breeders to showcase their stock. It also provides our members, both old & new, with the opportunities to exhibit at Affiliated shows on a level playing field, promoting healthy competition in a safe environment.

Therefore, a decision has been taken to decrease the number of shows offering medals, starting from the bottom up, adopting proven practices which have worked well in the past, together with your feedback and the experiences and findings highlighted over the last 2 years. This has been a huge task with a lot of discussion & healthy debate amongst the board. Council believes that a good compromise has been reached that offers a more traditional and balanced approach moving forward.

The Council is very aware that the membership and shows would have preferred a 12 monthsโ€™ notice period, but the current system cannot be sustained for another year, so it is imperative that we make these changes now that will be effective from the 1st January 2025. This gives a 7 months window of notice and lead in period before the next show season gets properly underway at the end of March. This will then allow the Society to focus on a review and overhaul of the selection procedure and policy surrounding our Judgesโ€™ panel, which is long overdue.

A summary of the changes for 2025 are set out below. These will be outlined in more detail when the Judging & Showing Handbook is published later in the year and the new completed 2025 judges list is returned.

Gold Performance Medals:

The Royal Welsh Agricultural Society Show: - Champion Ridden Section A, B, C, D, WPBR and Champion Welsh Driving exhibit.

Horse of the Year Show: - The winners of the ridden Section A, B, C & D and the highest placed WPBR in the Part bred class. There will also be an allocation of additional gold performance medals for some Welsh classes to acknowledge performance.

Gold Medal Shows - Royal Welsh Show

Silver Medal Shows

There will be a maximum of 14 silver medal shows per year. They have been selected to showcase the Welsh breeds, not just to our membership, but to give a fair geographical spread across the UK, taking into account the concentrations of where our members reside.

Lampeter & Glanusk Stallion shows will additionally be eligible to affiliate as a Silver Medal Show if desired.

These shows will not include Associations.

Area Associations will have the opportunity to apply for a silver medal to celebrate an anniversary in 25 year increments and only for that specific year.

These shows will need to offer the required number of 6 classes per section.

There will be no number restrictions and each section champion will receive a medal (subject to them meeting the rules set by the Society).

Exact details on these shows will be made available as soon as possible, as all the selected shows need to be contacted in line with this announcement.

The cost of a complete Silver Medal package, including 5 medals, affiliation fee and administration costs will be ยฃ355.

Bronze Medal Shows:

Bronze Medals will be available to Area Association shows only.

They must meet the criteria of a minimum of 4 classes per section.

Each association will be permitted one bronze medal show per year (they can choose to nominate either their spring or summer show, excluding foal & youngstock shows).

There will be no number restrictions and each section champion will receive a medal (subject to them meeting the rules of the Society).

The only Foal & Youngstock Show to be awarded a Society Bronze Medal will be the Royal Welsh Winter Fair.

The costs of a complete Bronze Medal package, including 5 medals, affiliation fee and administration costs, will be ยฃ280.

Bronze Medal Rosettes:

There will be a newly designed cone rosette available for all show categories to apply for. These can be awarded for additional Association shows, as well as their one nominated medal show.

There will be no number restrictions & no need to present the membership card in the ring.

There is no limit to the amount of bronze medal rosettes a show can hold.

They will be awarded to each section champion for the sections which the show chooses to affiliate.

There will be no limit to the number of Bronze Medal rosettes an animal can win in one season.

The cost of a Bronze Medal Rosette is ยฃ25 per rosette plus an affiliation fee.

Rule Changes:

In order to receive a Society award following any affiliated show there will no longer be a period of 14 days grace to become a member. The owner must be a member of the WPCS before the show date, and provide their membership number at the point of entering a WPCS Affiliated show.

The age of handlers exhibiting during open In Hand classes i.e., that are not specifically โ€˜designated young handlerโ€™ classes is now limited to a minimum of 14 years of age for handling a foal, filly, mare or gelding; A minimum 16 years of age and over for handling a c**t or stallion (age as of the 1st January in current year).

A WPCS panel Judge who provides equine production services for any other person, whether remuneration is received or not, will not be eligible to Judge any sections of the stud book in that same season(s) whilst providing this service.

A WPCS panel judge may only judge 1 bronze medal and 1 silver medal (if eligible) in a calendar year for each section they are on the panel for.

Nieces and Nephews will be added to the definition of immediate family.
