It is with the greatest regret that I advise you " I AM RETIRING From SADDLE FITTING" due to degenerative joint disorders . I Retire as of TODAY.
I'm going to miss you all especially those who have been loyal clients for 14years. Etiquette states if I have seen you within the last 6 month and you employ another qualified saddle fitter they should seek my permission to visit. For those of you that need it: I hereby give consent for your new fitter to visit. I would request that you give your new fitter your green copies so they can review your fitting history. To find a new fitter I would advise you go to the Society of Master Saddlers Web page to find another Qualified Saddle Fitter. Your fitting records will be retained for 7 years from your last fitting date. If you need access contact me at [email protected] or call me.
If you have any concerns I am available to talk on the phone but just give me a day after this post Im very sad and wont want to talk today. I'm sorry I could not contact you all personally but honestly there are too many of you. If I can help remotely with queries or issues until you find yourself a new fitter, as always I'm at the end of the phone. Take care everyone! Remember a minimum of 2 saddle checks a year to keep your horse or pony comfortably.

Shiny slippy saddle pads. Owners they look very pretty but they also allow saddle movement! It's proven reasearch that a horse performs better with a stable saddle. Horses that are croup high saddles are at risk of moving forward . A well fitting saddle and a slippy saddle pad could move upto 2" backwards and forwards ( proven reasearch) Equines being backed are not used to a saddle on their backs add a saddle moving forwards and backwards on a shiny slippy saddle pad they are going to feel that movement. Your horse can't tell you verbally it's uncomfortable it's just not going to want to move in it! Please don't blame the horse. Go for functionality over vanity please 🙏 cotton please. Think what's under your saddle. Take a long look at your horse is it Uphil, Downhill or level. The first 2 and your saddle is just going to follow gravity and either slip backwards or forwards. And please on a downhill horse a shiny saddle pad with a sheepskin pad is sort of like covering your saddle area with grease, your saddle is going to slide forward. Then you get adverse behaviour. Ask yourself please before you take a firm hand with your horse. Functionality use cotton.

**THURSDAY RESEARCH MEME**

Todays meme relates to the saddle twist/waist for the rider AND horse.

Some riders prefer a narrow twist/waist of the saddle to optimise hip function, comfort and to be closer to the horse. Whilst this maybe useful, it is important that the twist/waist of the saddle is suitable and can accommodate the horse’s conformation and back shape

Previously in trot, jump and gallop we have shown that areas of high pressure in the region of T10-T13 (region of the twist/waist) can have a significant affect on equine locomotion. Reinforcing the importance and complexities of correct saddle fit for both horse and rider

The most beautiful Makestival aka Max has gone to rainbow Bridge today. He was intelligent, a beautiful personality and made me belly laugh every day. I'll miss this boy! Unfortunately he managed to do his Angular Ligament and his Manica Flexoria whilst having fun and showing off in the field. He would never have been happy in a stable and all could see he was in pain. Need to thank Andy Harrison for my beautiful valentines day present all those years ago, Catherine Scott for being such a part of his life over the last 3 years, Laura Rowe for the showing memories with him. lots of people. Amy Andrew Lilley and Amy for breeding such a beautiful Arabian with the biggest personality. Karen Lesley Raine for the level headed friendly guidance. There is increasing interest in the effect of saddle design on horse kinematics, but little evidence of the influence on rider–saddle interaction and how this affects horse movement patterns.

We aimed to investigate the effect of changing the design of the saddle’s thigh block on the interaction between the rider and saddle and the effect this has on rider movement and horse movement.

To do this, we used a seat pressure mat between the rider and the saddle and tracking technology to analyse horse and rider movement. Elite level sports horses, ridden by elite level riders, were trotted in well-fitting dressage saddles that were identical, except for the thigh block design.

During straight-line locomotion when in sitting trot, results showed that a thigh block with a more deformable face (thigh block F) resulted in a greater contact area and more pressure between the rider’s seat and the saddle as well as a more upright rider position when the horse’s limbs were on the ground. An association between thigh block design, horse spinal movement, and forelimb flexion was also seen. These findings illustrated the importance of optimizing rider–saddle–horse interaction.
