😊👋🏻 Meet Aime!

We’re thrilled to have Aime with us for the next few weeks as she completes her work experience alongside her Veterinary studies at the University of Bristol.

She’s already making the most of her time here, enjoying plenty of cuddles with the adorable Iximena, who’s in for some socialisation visits🐶🐾.

🌾🐾 Dolly’s Day at the Vets 🐾🌾

Today, we had the lovely Dolly in for a little TLC after a pesky grass seed worked its way into her paw, making it very sore! 🐾 After a bit of sedation, we were able to safely remove the grass seed (see the picture below).

And can we just take a moment to appreciate how amazing she looks for 15 years old?! 😍🐶

Top Tips to Reduce the Risk of Grass Seed Injuries:

🔸 Avoid walking your dog in long grass whenever possible.
🔸 Always check their paws and ears after walks.
🔸 If your dog has long fur, consider getting them clipped shorter, especially around their feet.

Keep these tips in mind to keep your furry friends safe and healthy!

Things to help our four legged friends during the hot spell this week☀🐾:

Try to walk them at cooler times of the day, such as early in the morning or later in the evening.

Avoid Hot Surfaces: Hot pavements can burn your dog’s paws. Walk your dog on grass or dirt instead of asphalt or concrete, and test surfaces with your hand before letting your dog walk on them.

Limit Exercise: Reduce the intensity and duration of exercise during hot weather. Engage in light activities and avoid strenuous exercise.

Please see some signs of heatstroke to be aware of below.

If you are concerned that your pet is unwell then please call reception for advice. 🐾

A good guideline from Nutravet during this hot spell☀️

It's going to be another hot one today ☀️

If it's too hot for you, it's too hot for your pet! Make sure they have plenty of shade & water and don't walk your dog in the sun. And don't leave them in a car for any amount of time!

One of our student veterinary nurse, Becky, is doing a charity walk on the 3rd August with her daughter Megan. They are hiking 25km across Exmoor to raise money for The National Autistic Society as they have family members and friends who are autistic and the charity has been very helpful. We are pleased to have sponsored them in their challenge-if you’d like to support them the donation link is in comments. Becky has been training with her Labrador Ziggy, but he gets a bit tired after about 5 miles so stays behind on the longer walks!

‼️ IMPORTANT INFORMATION ‼️
July is our busiest month here at Secret World, we are currently inundated with animals at the centre, particularly orphans that require intensive one on one care. It is important that we prioritise the welfare of the animals already in our care and ensure we have the time and resources to best look after our current patients.

We currently have 360 animals in our care across a variety of different species including badgers, foxes, tawny owls, hedgehogs, a variety of garden bird species and ducklings.

This means that for the time being we have made the difficult decision to temporarily prioritise wildlife in our immediate catchment area (within a 10-mile radius of centre) where there are no other rescue centres. Secret Word relies heavily on volunteers and this catchment area is where we are best supported.

We are not doing this because we don’t want to help but we must prioritise the wellbeing of the animals currently in our care.
If you are outside our 10-mile catchment area and need advice please find alternative rescues at
↪️ https://directory.helpwildlife.co.uk/

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our extremely dedicated wildlife carers, receptionists and volunteers who are working incredibly hard under unprecedented demand.

If you would like to support Secret World by becoming part of our team of over 300 volunteers, please apply through our website.
